I’m the first to admit that taking supplements is a pain in the ass. It can be expensive, it’s a bit of an inconvenience, and I would much prefer to receive all of the nutrients I need from food. However, the reality is that our food these days just doesn’t cut it – even if you eat a clean, organic diet. We need supplements to make up for the areas our bodies are lacking in.

I remember when I realised I needed to grow my own organic food in order to heal my health. I had visions of row after row of garden beds, overflowing with plants of all descriptions. I saw an edible smorgasbord where I could simply walk through the orchard and pick a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

When I worked in magazines, my collection of perfumes was so large that I actually had a bottle of Paris Hilton’s scent in my loo for use as toilet spray. When I was diagnosed with cancer and had to ditch all toxins from my lifestyle, I was heart broken as I gave away them all away. Back then, I couldn’t leave the house without a spritz of something. These days, I can’t stand the smell of them.

Are you sitting near another person at the moment? Have you been talking to someone else recently? Thinking of someone else? On current estimates, one in nearly every two people alive today will develop cancer in their lifetime. That is way too many. But if you have someone else near to you, that is two people. So who might it be? How good would it be to save a life in 2013?

Yes that’s right. Black beans are totally superfoods. Betcha weren’t aware of that piece of culinary insight. They may not look fancy, have a fancy name, or come from some fancy forest, but these little beans pack one hell of a nutritious punch. Let’s call forward their list of achievements:

GUEST POST BY LEANNE VOGEL.
Throughout my journey to live a healthier life, I’ve found that caring about what I put in my body becomes effortless when I’m inspired to create excitement around the foods that I’m eating. Whether I’ve transformed an apple into a healthy muffin or a tablespoon of nut butter into a tasty dip, a bit of creativity goes a long way in making me feel good about my eating habits.
I approach my water consumption with the same vigor as I do everything else in my life – I want it to be full of color, flavour and authenticity. No artificial flavours or colors, fizzy water, water with extra vitamins, or water that costs $5.00 per bottle either. I just want the plain stuff… with a bit of pizzazz.

If I had just five second to stand up on a global soap box and declare something to the masses, it would be this: Being healthy does not mean deprivation. In order to adopt a clean and healthy diet, you don’t actually have to give anything up. It’s simply about educating yourself and swapping out junk foods by replacing them with foods that are natural, whole, nutritious and way more satisfying.

You’ve pledged to be healthy. You’ve pledged to stay away from processed foods. You’re no longer consuming refined sugar. You’re a wellness warrior on a mission to have the cleanest body possible … but gosh darn it, you’re fanging for something to eat to tide you over until the next meal. You need a snack – some kind of comfort food. The voice inside your head is pleading with you to betray your health pledge. “To hell with the clean body”, it’s saying. But you know better. You know that there is a better way. For you know, that being healthy has nothing to do with deprivation. Oh yes, welcome to the world of healthy comfort foods. Let me show you around.

I realised something a little while ago: It’s not lack of information that causes us to make poor choices for ourselves. It’s not lack of knowledge that makes us devour an entire tub of ice cream while watching Gossip Girl on a Friday night. And I don’t know about you, but I’ve never actually thought I was doing my health a favour by downing two bottles on wine. No, it’s certainly not lack of knowledge that causes us to do these things. It’s lack of support, lack of guidance, lack of accountability, and the big one – lack of self love.
It was this realisation that led me to create my coaching program, The Lifestyle Transformation Guide, and it’s going deeper into this realisation that has led me to making one very important addition to the program: monthly coaching calls.
