Foodie Friday: Sherilyn Palmer
Mother, wife, fertility nurse / midwife, holistic health coach – Sherilyn Palmer is one busy lady. However, that doesn’t stop her from making sure she and her family eat the best quality, amazing tasting food. And you can tell just by looking at her food blog, Wholepromise, that Sherilyn loves supplying it. Her food is wholesome, hearty, healthy, and so tasty looking that you just want to reach out and lick the screen (well, not my screen – it’s gross dirty).
I met Sherilyn when she tapped me on the shoulder at our local organic supermarket one day, and I have been hooked on her blog ever since.
What was the catalyst that turned you into a healthy foodie?
A diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) in 2003 at the age of 27 was a driving factor for me. Spurred on by the fear of fertility issues and other long-term health consequences, I started looking very closely at the food I was consuming by reading labels and ingredient lists. Discovering the food I thought was healthy was laden with hidden sugar and additives I quickly took control and got back into kitchen and started cooking my own food. Thankfully I come from a long line of women who loved to cook so getting in the kitchen and preparing food from scratch was something that was familiar to me and something I found really enjoyable. It proved good practice because now I have two hungry and active boys to feed so whipping up quick and healthy meals in the kitchen is a must.
What are your non-negotiables when it comes to your diet?
Lots of vegetables are my foundation and keeping sugar to a minimum is also important. More recently I have moved toward a gluten and grain free diet. A big factor in PCOS is insulin resistance – a defect in the way the body processes sugar and this can interfere with the balance of hormones not to mention the functioning of the ovaries and the menstrual cycle. Needless to say, any highly refined and processed food is out of the question for me. Going to the farmer’s markets is my most favourite thing to do on the weekend and living on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland means I have access to some really amazing organic and local produce. It is here that I do the bulk of my weekly shopping.
How do you stay healthy while travelling?
I drink lots of water as I find I dehydrate really easily and I pack lots of homemade snacks as my blood sugar levels become quite erratic if I let myself get to hungry. My family and I tend to prefer fairly active holiday destinations and when travelling for work my running shoes always travel too, as does a skipping rope in case the weather is bad.
What are your go-to meals and snacks when you are super busy?
A lots of my snack and meal ideas I share on my blog Wholepromise. Aside from managing my PCOS, my kids are another big reason why I cook so if it doesn’t taste good, they won’t eat it. They also love variety and so do I so we tend to mix things up a lot.
Of late we have been eating:
Raw Macadamia Nut Cheese and Vegetable Sticks
Dairy Free Banana and Coconut Custard
Hazelnut Cacao Balls
Sweet Potato and Millet Cakes and my two boys have recently been indulging in some Raw Chocolate which is super easy to make, is very tasty and minus all the extra additives of regular chocolate.
Juices or smoothies: Which do you prefer? What’s your favourite combination?
I love both, especially if a smoothie is made on nut milk. The thing I love about a juice is the clean feeling drinking it brings. My favourite combination would have to be: apple, mint, ginger, beetroot and kale
What’s the biggest nutrition misconception you are always having to clear up for people?
That fat is good for them provided it is the right type and quantity. As a fertility nurse and health counsellor, I talk to a lot of woman and eating fat scares many of them but when they understand their body needs fat to make hormones and facilitate ovulation they are more receptive to eating it and their skin appreciates it as well.
If you could prepare a meal for anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and what would you make?
It would definitely be my belated grandmother, Hilda. I have such fond memories of many a Sunday afternoon cooking in her country house kitchen. She made everything and I would give anything to show her my appreciation for fostering my love of cooking. I would cook for her a meal that she would have once cooked for me with a few adaptations. Absolutely traditional to say the least but it is a meal that would be ladled with comfort, lots of banter, plenty of laughter and possibly a hint of sarcasm thrown in. If only I had her wood-fired stove to cook it in – organic roast chicken with real gravy and roasted vegetables with a gluten free apple crumble and homemade custard.
What does being a Wellness Warrior mean to you?
As a fertility nurse, mum, PCOS sufferer, blogger, health counsellor and soon-to-be certified natural fertility teacher, I want to inspire woman in all stages of life to nurture their reproductive health and wellbeing by showing them how to cook healthy food that will nourish their body giving it what it needs to do great things with.

Why Savasana Is Not Just For Your Yoga Mat
Don’t let the topic or the headline put your off – whether you’re into yoga or not, this post will benefit you immensely.
If you’re not a yogi or a yogini, let me bring you up to speed on what savasana is. Most yoga modalities are made up of varying poses and slightly different rules, however there is a pose that is crucial to all yoga classes – savasana. Savasana, or “corpse pose” or “dead body pose” is the pose that is practiced at the end of each class. In Bikram yoga, it is practiced at the end of each pose in the floor series. It is the most important part of any class. This may seem strange given that it is the pose that requires the least amount of effort – all it involves is lying on your back with your arms out to the side, arms facing up, and remaining perfectly still. However, its simplicity is deceptive. Most people struggle more with this pose than they do with the more complicated ones. We humans have so much difficulty doing absolutely nothing at all.
Savasana is crucial to yoga because it is in this pose that all of your previous work is integrated and your body is able to absorb all of the benefits. It also calms the body, stills the mind, and allows deep healing to occur.
I believe that savasana is also crucial to life off our yoga mats. We are constantly racing from one task to the next, moving down our to-do lists, and mentally ticking boxes next to all of the goals we set for ourselves. But at the end of the day, we often still feel like we could have accomplished more, or we’re just plain exhausted. If we took the time to ruminate at the end of a task, reflect at the end of an achieved goal, and practice stillness between our to-dos, we would develop an awareness that would lead to satisfaction with our efforts and peace of mind that would allow us to enjoy it. How blissful does that sound?
Ways To Inject Savasana Into Your Daily Life
When you finish reading a book, don’t just go straight to the next one you have sitting on your bedside table (I’m guilty of doing this). Instead, take a little while to allow the message from the last book to sink in. Maybe go back and re-read passages that stood out to you. Let the wisdom become a part of you.
When you drive somewhere, spend a few moments before you get out of the car to come home to yourself. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and centre yourself before you move onto wherever you are going.
When you’re eating a meal, try to do so mindfully. Don’t watch TV or read a magazine at the same time. Instead, enjoy each mouthful, chew carefully, and show gratitude for the nutrition your body is receiving.
When you cross something off your to-do list, be grateful to yourself for getting the job done. Before you move onto the next task, take a moment to look out the window, take a few deep breaths, calm your mind, and visualise the rest of your day going smoothly.
When you’re in the shower, repeat positive affirmations to yourself. Shower time can often cause mental chatter to get away from us. Reel it in by staying mindful, and only saying nice things to yourself.
When you’re on the toilet. This is the perfect time to close your eyes and still the mind!
Before you get out of bed in the morning, repeat at least five things you are grateful for and then affirm that you are going to have a wonderful day.
In the middle of the day, take some time out. Sit outside in the sun, lie on your back somewhere and close your eyes, cloud watch, or just sit back in your chair with your feet on the ground and practice some deep breathing.
Before bed, think of all the positive things that happened during the day. Then, mentally relax every part of your body.
Can you think of any other ways to practice savasana off the yoga mat?
Positive affirmation for the day: I release the need to change anything about my life. Everything is just the way it is supposed to be.

Life Is A Mirror
Guest pots by Rebecca Dettman.
Someone very clever once wrote a book called The Holographic Universe, which deals with the basic tenet (which most cosmic people understand) that the world around you mirrors yourself back to yourself.
A girlfriend Skyped me this morning. She recently moved back from London, has already changed states, has been through a bunch of short-lived jobs, and on Thursday was frog-marched out of her latest boring admin position. She is lost, directionless, and has no idea what to do. “And to top it all off,” she said, “My knees are killing me. I think I have arthritis. I’m off to get some herbal drugs.” I raised my eyebrows and responded, “Um, hel-LO… do you know what legs and knees symbolise? Your direction in life!” She was stunned. But it makes sense, doesn’t it?
Last week, another friend was in the middle of a conversation when her nose started bleeding. Just like that! How bizarre! Whose nose starts bleeding during a conversation?! I went home and found my bible – The Body is the Barometer of the Soul So Be Your Own Doctor by Annette Noontil – and emailed her what nose bleeds mean: “Bursting a blood vessel! Not satisfied with self, so pushing yourself too hard to show that you are able to do things as well as others.”
The idea that everything that goes wrong with your body is directly linked to an emotion was explored a few decades ago by Louise Hay. In You Can Heal Your Life, Hay outlined a bunch of common and rare ailments and gave their corresponding emotions. Thus, mouth ulcers mean “Stagnating, and keeping the habit too long, frustrated that you are not outflowing better than you are, when you cannot say how you feel”, while breast cancer indicates “not nurturing yourself; doing for others before you”.
In our holographic universe where everything is intricately connected and it’s all just a big pot of vibrating energy, everything that is felt in your head / heart is automatically projected out into the reality around you. Thus, life mirrors back what’s going on deep inside you. And the stuff that you push deep down, suppressing for years and years? Well, the energy of those thoughts and feelings has to exist somewhere — so we hold them in our livers, our stomachs, our breasts etc, in the form of cancers, abcesses, tumours and other strange growths.
This is why instant healings (aka spontaneous remissions, or medical miracles) have been known to occur: when a person is able to release a major emotional blockage they’ve been carrying for years — or lifetimes — incredible energetic changes take place as peace and freedom returns. And don’t think that what’s going on in your head is limited to the physical symptoms your body is experiencing: if you drop a glass, see a white owl, run out of petrol, get fired or stub your toe, I often think that’s all a reflection of what’s going on inside you, too. In fact, Noontil’s book contains a fascinating section showing how what’s wrong with your car has a direct correlation with your life! (A flat right front tyre = a fear has stopped you being in charge of your physical direction; forgetting where your car is parked = not able to find your [life] direction).
The message here? (I know I’ve banged this drum before, but hey, it’s SUCH an important one.) You’re not a victim who ‘gets sick’ because of forces out of your control. Stuff doesn’t just ‘happen to you’. You are responsible for the thoughts in your head, and thus the energy you project all around you. You are in control. If life seems to be hitting you hard, what is resisting or conflicting inside you? Focus on that, and true change and healing will begin.
Can you recognise any mirror like activity going on in your life and body at the moment?

8 Common Health Myths
First, a warning: the information I am about to share may be more shocking than discovering that the Tooth Fairy isn’t real, or that if you pull a funny face and the wind changes, your face won’t actually stay that way. But I’m only sharing what I have discovered and in the past have been equally shocked about. Just because you hear something on the telly, or it’s a “fact” that has been around for yonks doesn’t mean it’s true. Anything you see or hear on TV about health is usually nothing more than clever marketing trickery, and many age-old truths are incredibly out dated and false.
Some of these common myths include …
Myth #1: You need to eat meat for protein
Anyone who has ever gone the flesh-free route will understand just how much the Western world is conditioned to think that without meat, we just can’t possibly survive. After all, “where on Earth do you get your protein?” is the question we veggies are asked constantly by our unknowing omnivorous friends. The answer is this: plants. Plants contain protein – some in very high amounts, like spirulina, quinoa, chia seeds, nuts, seeds, legumes. Click here to see more plant-based protein choices.
Myth #2: You need to consume dairy for calcium
I’m not a fan of dairy at all, but I have to admit that the industry has done a darn top job at marketing. Not only have they managed to convince most of the world that dairy is essential for calcium intake, but most people think that without it they will likely gain osteoporosis. This is not true in the slightest. Not only is dairy a poor choice when it comes to calcium (our bodies don’t absorb calcium from dairy very well because of how acidic it is), but the countries that consume the most dairy actually have the highest rates of osteoporosis. You can read T. Colin Campbell’s work in The China Study if you want that fact backed up by an expert who has done the research. Calcium also comes from plants like chia seeds, sesame seeds, Brussel sprouts, green leafy veggies, almonds, and more. Click here for a list.
Myth #3: Slip, Slop, Slap to prevent skin cancer
Not only does it not prevent skin cancer, but shunning the sun and slathering your body with toxic sunscreen actually promotes it! The chemicals in sunscreen are nasty – and when we apply it to our skin these chemicals are absorbed straight into our blood stream. Plus, vitamin D deficiency (from not allowing your body to see sunlight) is a huge problem and can lead to depression, thyroid issues, and cancer – even skin cancer! Dr Mercola has written a great article about it here.
Myth #4: The higher the calories, the worse the food
I’m a sucker for reality TV, and I hate to admit it but The Biggest Loser sucks me in every time. However, I can’t stand the way they place so much emphasis on restricting calories. Not all calories are created equal! Calorie content simply means the amount of energy you will receive from a particular food. Calories are not evil – it’s the type of calories that matter. Calories from wholefoods = good. Calories from refined, processed foods = bad. Simple.
Myth #5: Carbs are bad
Carbs are NOT evil! Carbohydrates are our primary source of energy, and without them we would have a very hard time doing much at all. As with calories, not all carbohydrates are created equal. Processed, refined carbohydrates like white rice, white pasta, cakes, and biscuits etc. are the bad guys. They are stripped of their nutrients and convert straight to sugar. Whole food carbohydrates like brown rice, fruit, potatoes and other veggies are important elements of a healthy diet.
Myth #6: It doesn’t matter if you don’t poop every day – everyone is different
If you are not pooping at least once a day, you’re not pooping enough! It generally takes about 20 hours for food to travel from your mouth to the toilet. If you don’t go to the toilet every day, this means that you are storing food in your digestive tract where it is fermenting, rotting, and offloading toxins into your system. If you feel you are not dropping the kids off at the pool regularly enough, chances are you need to include more fibre and water in your diet and eliminate processed and refined foods.
Myth #7: Saturated fat is bad
There’s no one more equipped to de-bunk this myth than controversial nutritionist, Cyndi O’Meara. Cyndi’s been banging this drum for years, and she is totally right. This is what she says in her Cholesterol Myth report:
“Saturated fats play a very important role in total body health. They constitute at least 50% of the cell membrane, which gives the cell necessary stiffness and integrity, and when you realise that we are made up of trillions of cells, this is a very important function. Saturated fat also plays a vital role in the health of bones; for calcium and other minerals to be effectively incorporated into the bones, at least 50% of the dietary fat should be saturated. They also protect the liver from alcohol and other toxins like painkillers. These wonderful fats help enhance the immune system, they have antimicrobial properties and are protective against harmful microorganisms in the digestive tract. Saturated fats are required for proper use of essential fatty acids. Elongated omega 3 fatty acids are better retained in the tissues when the diet is rich in saturated fats. What is amazing is that the saturated fats stearic acid and palmitic acid are the preferred foods for the heart, which might be why the fat around the heart muscle is high in saturated fat. The heart will draw on this reserve of fat in times of stress.”
It’s important to mention that Cyndi is talking about natural saturated fats like coconut oil and organic butter and not saturated fats made as a result of the complete hydrogenation of a vegetable oil as is found in margarine and hydrogenated vegetable oils. Margarine is NOT a better choice than butter.
Myth #8: Lightly steaming food in the microwave is healthy
If there is anything that you take away from this article, make it this point: microwaves are dangerous. It’s common sense, really. Radiating food is not going to be healthy. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to work that one out – yet many people will still dispute me on this.
Andreas Moritz writes that microwave food is “nutritionally deficient nuclear waste” and also about the link between microwaves and cancer:
“Microwave usage in the preparation of food has been found to lead to lymphatic disorders and an inability to protect the body against certain cancers. The research found increased rates of cancer cell formation in the blood of people eating microwave-cooked meals. The Russians also reported increased rates of stomach and intestinal cancers, as well as digestive and excretive disorders, plus a higher percentage of cell tumors, including sarcoma.”
I stopped using a microwave the day I was diagnosed with cancer, and I never plan to use one ever again. Read more about how bad they are here.
What do you think of this list? Any surprises? Do you have any common myths you can add?
Positive affirmation for the day: Everything will work out brilliantly.

8 Things I’m Loving At The Moment
1. WHERE I LIVE
At the risk of sounding like I’m on the payroll for Coolum tourism, I really do live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The weather has been absolutely amazing lately, and thankfully I’ve been able to get out and about more than usual. I’ve been going for long walks from my house down to the beach, sitting outside in the sun each morning, and really just making most of the amazing healing environment I am so blessed to have. If you have no idea where Coolum is, it’s on the Sunshine Coast about an hour north of Brisbane and about 20 minutes south of Noosa. If you’re ever in Queensland, I definitely recommend coming here for a visit.
2. ALIVE NEW YORK
On June 29-30, you have the chance to attend (either in person or virtually) the largest celebrity health and eco benefit and awards show in the world. ALIVE New York is a two-day conference and awards show bringing you insider health secrets from top health experts including Dr. Stanislaw Burzynski, Dr. Leonard Coldwell, Dr. Robert Young, Dr. Nicholas Gonzalez, Mike Adams and many more.
All proceeds from this event go to funding natural anti-cancer clinics as well as over 15 other charities. Your ticket will get you 15 hours of life-changing information from twenty of the world’s top speakers. You will learn how to reverse cancer naturally, learn why cancer is NOT a death sentence and why it should NOT be feared, how to change your world from the inside out and teach others to do the same, how to grow your resources and value financial freedom and how to protect yourself and family in a world of the un-known.
Go to www.alivenewyork.com to purchase your ticket for the global live streaming, or to see it all happen in person in New York.
3. QUINOA
So simple. So tasty. So filling. Quinoa really is one of the best culinary inventions ever. I made this easy dish the other night as a side to our usual Gerson meal, but it could easily be a meal on it’s own.
What you’ll need:
1 cup quinoa
½ cup fresh basil
½ cup fresh coriander (aka cilantro)
1 clove garlic
2 tsp turmeric
What to do:
1. Rinse quinoa and the add to a pot with about 2 cups of water.
2. Bring to the boil, and then reduce to simmer for about 15-20 minutes. All water should be soaked up, but you don’t want the quinoa to turn too mushy.
3. Add garlic and turmeric towards the end and stir through.
4. Turn off the heat and add chopped herbs.
5. Serve with a drizzle of olive oil (or flaxseed oil once it’s cool).
4. VEGAN CARD
My friends Amanda and Dave from Vegan Era are gearing up to launch their latest awesome initiative – the Vegan Card! This card is kind of like your VIP pass to the vegan world. It will grant you all sorts of discounts from businesses online and all over Australia, that are doing their bit to make the world a kinder place. Some businesses include Be Genki, Sanctus Stones, Adorn Mineral Cosmetics, and ME! This card will get you a 10% discount off of all of my products. Plus, a portion of the proceeds from this card is supporting Edgar’s Mission – one of my favourite charities in the world. The card officially launched on June 1, but it’s on sale now.
Go here to learn more and buy your card.
WIN A VEGAN CARD!!
Amanda and Dave would like to give a Vegan Card away to one lucky wellness warrior. If you would like to win, simply leave a comment under this post telling me about the positive changes you’ve noticed in your body since following a plant-based diet. I will announce the winner in this Friday’s newsletter. So make sure you’re on the list.
5. CLAY FACE MASKS
One of my readers, Dani Angel (how cool is that name!), sent me some of her holistic skin care products last week and I really want to tell you about them. Dani’s range is called Scented, and it is so beautiful. It’s also totally natural, organic and includes divine essential oils. My friend, Sarah, and I tried out the French Green Clay mask the other night, and it made our skin so soft. I love a good face mask – it’s one of the only beauty rituals I perform regularly to draw toxins and impurities out of my skin. Go to www.scentedholisticskincare.com.au.
6. FANCY SALAD
I may have completed my two years of “official” Gerson Therapy, but a whopping big plate of salad twice a day is still a massive priority for me. This is one we had the other day. It had in it:
Cos lettuce
Baby spinach
Cherry tomatoes
Green capsicum
Snow peas
Red cabbage
Carrot
Radish
Red onion
Zucchini (made into noodles with the Spirooli)
I added chickpeas, flaxseed oil and apple cider vinegar after I put it on my plate.

Recipe Of The Week: Lentil Coconut Curry
I am interrupting Foodie Friday this week to tell you guys about the amazing curry I made recently. This is the dish I had been hanging out for for two whole years, ever since I took the Gerson Therapy anti-spice vow.
I made my own coconut milk because it is super easy to do, and all of the canned ones seem to contain guar gum. If you’re up for it, I totally suggest making your own.
What you’ll need:
3 cups shredded coconut
1 1/2 cups French lentils
3 tsp organic curry powder (we looked for one without salt)
1 onion
3 cloves garlic
2 small carrots (or one large)
1 zucchini
1 cup broccoli
1 capsicum (aka bell pepper)
1 sweet potato
1 large potato
1 large tomato
Coriander (aka cilantro) to taste
What to do:
For the coconut milk
1. Blend 3 cups of shredded coconut with 6 cups of water on high for a couple of minutes.
2. Use a nut milk bag, cheesecloth, or a tea towel draped over a mesh strainer and strain the milk.
3. Squeeze the bag to make sure you extract all of the milk.
For the curry
1. Heat garlic and onion in a pot (with coconut oil if you like). Add curry powder and mix for a couple of seconds.
2. Add lentils to the pot and combine with onion and spices.
3. Add coconut milk to the pot and bring to the boil. Once boiling, reduce to simmer for about 20 minutes.
4. Add the rest of the vegetables and continue to simmer for another 20 minutes or until veggies and lentils are cooked. Lentils should be soft, but still retain their shape.
5. Serve topped with fresh coriander.

Allopathy or Wellness?
Guest post by Cyndi O’Meara.
What healthcare do you choose; drugs, surgery and/or radiation or environment, diet and lifestyle changes?
I was at a conference over the weekend and I was speaking with one of the delegates who were telling me that many allopathic practitioners (medical) say that changing diet has no consequence to the prognosis of a patient’s condition. I kept shaking my head wondering how any one with a degree in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry could possibly say this.
Mainstream medicine believes that the body is inherently not capable of health because it is flawed due to the genes that are passed on from our parents. The day we are born we are given things to help these so-called inherent weaknesses such as Vitamin K because we are not born with enough, vaccination for immunity, Panadol so that the body won’t fry the brain in a fever, antibiotics to fight infection, pain killers because we can’t handle pain and so on. Every week we hear a new discovery that the cause of cancer, diabetes and other diseases is due to a new gene discovery. The only way mainstream health care deals with this is by prescribing drugs, surgery and/or radiation. Their belief system makes this type of treatment logical. For them, to change the diet and the environment seems a waste of time because they do not have that belief.
But what if that belief system is wrong? And what if the body is perfect and capable of exuberant health? And what if it is not that we have something inherently wrong in the body, but rather we live in a toxic environment and eat a diet low in nutrition? Then the treatment would be to improve the environment (get rid of toxins) and choose foods that will stop nutrient deficiencies, as I’ve talked about for 25 years in Changing Habits Changing Lives.
There are two ways to explain this more fully and to show how powerful diet and environment change can stop gene expression:
The Agouti Mouse
The agouti mouse is a patterned mouse that is prized for research. It has yellow fur, gets fat, develops diabetes and cancer and then dies. No matter what drugs, surgery or radiation they give the agouti mouse, the prognosis for this mouse and its offspring is never encouraging. Until one day someone changed the mouse’s environment by changing the diet of the mother. The offspring were born with brown fur and did not develop diabetes or cancer. Interesting!
The Animal Kingdom
Over the past 30 or so years there are animals that have become extinct, large fish deaths in the great lakes and mass bird deaths around the world. Science has never indicated that it was a genetic deficiency in the organism, but rather environmental factors that caused the extinction or death. Humans are the only species on the planet where the environment and food they eat is not seen as the major problem, but rather the human gene being the culprit.
Let’s put this in perspective. It is your belief system that will dictate what course of treatment you trust for your health. That is using drugs, surgery and radiation or removing the toxins from your environment and addressing nutrient deficiencies.
When you walk into your doctor’s office you are always asked the question “What is wrong?” A diagnosis is given and a specific treatment is prescribed. When you walk into a wellness health practice the concern is not always to find a diagnosis or to find out what is specifically wrong, but rather to help you improve your diet, lifestyle and environment in order for the body to be healthy so that it can get rid of any so-called condition you may have.
People often say to me “I have Graves’ disease”, “I have diabetes”, “I have xxxxx”. There are so many diseases and conditions. I’m never interested in the disease you have. What I want to do is to get you to remove the toxins from your environment and feed the body with high nutrient foods in order for the body to heal itself.
When we change our environment and our diet, the body can live with exuberant energy and health. Trust your body – it has more wisdom than any scientist or doctor; it is a body that has evolved without fault.
Happy Changing Habits
