Gut bacteria is so important, but so few people realise! I love making raw fermented sauerkraut, which is awesome for your guts. I’ve had a few jars explode on me though, so now I store it outside my back door in its own esky! And each jar takes about five days to mature, so it’s not for the impatient… But it feels so lovely and clean and nourishing when you eat it! xo!

With regards to healthy gut. I was recently diagnosed with the helibactor stomach virus/ulcer. At 48 the doctor said I would of had this in my gut for at least 20-30 years. Basically this would of caused my stomach to be very low in all important stomach acid. The nurse who did the test said 60% of people have it and will never realize this. To my horror the nurse said she treats people who are extremely healthy, people who have eaten organic diets for decades. Having low stomach acid people will not be able to absorb most of the nutrience in their foods and supplements.

Knowing this gave me a good understanding as to why over the last 15 months I have not put on any muscle in the gym. I have the best instructors and was so disciplined with everything with regards to gaining muscle.

The standard treatment is the triple antibiotic therapy… that is a really strong antibiotic to kill the Helicobacter pylori bacteria you carry in your stomach. This treatment usually helps to get rid of stomach ulcer. I recently come across interesting research on this subject and i have learned that very often people who have done the triple therapy suffer from chronic weight gain and some scientists speculated that this bacteria may actually fulfil some important function in human system. I certainly need to do more research in this area!
To deal with low stomach acid : try drinking half of a lemon squeezed into glass of warm water 20-30 minutes before each meal. There are also supplements that address the low acidity and help your body to produce more stomach acid and break down proteins more efficiently. You may supplement with vit B12, zinc and iron. Probiotics will also help you to optimise your digestion.

Thank you! I have been hearing about fermented foods as a way to help stomach issues (which I have) but I am so turned off by them! I am also scared to make my own. I think I need to start though as they may be the missing link in my diet.

Hi Lyn! Give them a go, you will not retreat it. The yoghurt and kefir is easiest to obtain and make, so you may start from those, you can also try probiotic supplements check my blog post on the topic on http://www.trupp.net
all the best in your healing journey!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for doing this story.

I keep hearing about taking a good quality probiotic and the benefits of doing so.
It really does make sense for prospective mothers have a healthy digestive system to give their unborn baby the best start in life. I’m going to get screened for any digestive problems and rectify them before I get pregnant as i think I may have some problems.

This story has given me the push to sign up for one of Dorota’s cooking courses for Probiotics and Fermented Foods.

Thanks again ladies !

Thank you Natasha for great feedback! Its much appreciated:-) We can’t wait to see you on one of our classes. xx

Informative session – thank you.
Have been interested in fermented foods for a while now but it all looks too hard to do myself…look forward to you show us how to ferment some foods?

J

It’s very easy, and yes we will be showing you how to prepare some fermented foods in couple of weeks. xx

I am taking antibiotics for a serious dental infection (caused by another medication, imagine that) so I’m doing my best by eating kimchee with every meal, minding my food combining, making kombucha, and taking a strong probiotic. It’s the best I can do given the circumstances.

You are doing great! All the best in your healing journey! xx

Very good episode ladies. Kind regards, Lyall :)

Hi ladies, loved this episode. So into fermented foods and have a huge batch of kombucha brewing at the moment. Its SO important to get that gut bacteria healthy! Could I just say I wouldn’t handle the kombucha mushroom with metal tongs as they don’t like metal of any kind (even the staples in teabags)
Keep up the great work and lets encourage people to go back to the old ways of eating as much as possible.
Thanks for a great post.

How do you make Kombucha tea?

Health Talks will be showing a follow up episode with the demo in couple of weeks. You can also learn it from us in our fermentation cooking course. xx

You can google it too, there are loads of instructions available online

Hi Claire

Where do you purchase the kombucha mushroom and the kefir starter grains??

Thank you for great feedback! Yes, the metal is not too good with Kambucha scoby. We only used it for demonstration porpoise when filming:-) xx

Thank you for a MOST INTERESTING story! Need to learn more, a LOT MORE!,!
Gabi

Thank you for such a generous feedback! xx

Great post! Can anyone recommend where to buy kombucha tea?

In australia it is illegal for retailers to sale those goods unpasterised, and you don’t want to buy the pasterised one, as the bacteria will not be there… therefore it’s best to make it yourself. Check my blog post on the subject for more detail http://www.trupp.net

I am so excited now….
Searching for answers I came across Dorota Trupps website prior to Christmas….
I enrolled in the fermenting course….
Thank you for producing such a wonderful website..

Hello Maria – we can’t wait to met you at our school! xx

Great post! I am very interested in the Russian author’s name who wrote a book about autism and gut health. Can I get the name somewhere?

Much appreciated

Hi Kari, the author is Natasha Campbell-McBride and the books is called Gut and Psychology Syndrome. AMAZING book and amazing video ladies.

its Natasha Campbell-McBride, google her- her work is fabulous!

I am also really interested in Probiotics and there huge benefit on over all health, so this segment came in perfect timing.

I was told though that by the time the Probiotic (if taken in a supplement form) travels to your large intestine that the good bacteria has died, is that the case?

Also what is a reputable practitioners brand of Probiotic to supplement with?

Thanks healthtalks team, for another fantastic week.

Juliana

Hello, check my blog post on the subject for details on probiotic supplements http://www.trupp.net – regards the survival rate of supplement… in theory, stomach acid should have killed any bacteria before it reaches even the small intestine.. however we see that probiotic supplements do work against this theory, even when taken as a powder. Keep taking it, it will improve the state of your health.

Great story girls. I’ve been trying to incorporate fermented food into my diet as well as having probiotics and have definitely noticed a difference.

Keep up the great work!

This was my favorite episode of Healthtalks so far. Really great. Would love to know more about making your own probiotic foods.
Good job ladies!

Thank you for generous feedback ! Health Talks will be posting follow up on this story with preparation demo in couple of weeks, if you are in Melbourne check out our cooking course on the subject :https://www.truppcookingschool.com/booking-2.php?course_id=354
xx

What good timing. I live in France but will be in Melbourne during your course. I must first check my schedule, but I will most likely book in! Thanks.

Loved this episode! My fave so far. I’m really interested in fermenting and have been having kombucha for the last 2 weeks. It’s surprisingly yummy! Dorota was really knowledgable and a great guest. Thanks Jess xx

Thank you Alana, your feedback is much appreciated! xx

Would you recommend kombulcha for a candida sufferer? I have been suffering with candida for about three years now, ever since I came off the pill – it has a lot to answer for!

I would recommend yoghurt and kefir to start from as well as strong probiotic supplement. Kambucha is a fungi and it sometimes is not best choice of probiotic to start the treatment of candida. Good luck with the healing journey! xx

Hi, thank you so much for this. I started making kombucha about 2 months ago and I can’t get enough of it!

Hi Jess, I cannot get it to play! Please help as I am desperate to watch it. Pippa

Pippa » Hi Pippa, I’m not too sure why that is. Are you able to watch other YouTube clips? x

Hi Jess, thanks so much for getting back to me. I’ve just checked and for some reason can’t watch any!!! I watch all the time so not sure what has happened, but at least I know it’s with all of them and not just yours. On with my quest of discovery…..Pippa x

I’m really funny with foods and can’t imagine myself being able to stomach fermented foods because they look so revolting to me. I definitely would try a good pro-biotic, I didn’t realize there was a difference between a good health food store one and one from the chemist. I look forward to the recipes and hope that there’s something I could try

Hi Jess, firstly I just wanted to say awesome site!

I’m very glad to have found it, as I’m also on my own epic health journey.

A bit of input re-gut bacteria and Autism. I work as a carer for young men with Autism and I can tell you the one constant I have seen through my observations is they all have digestion problems (often undigested foods in stools) and abnormal looking bowel actions. It’s no coincidence, this is an observation made from caring for about 25 different guys.

I’d also like to say to be very careful when making your Kombucha as like someone said above it’s easy to contaminate your starter Scobie.

Donna Gate’s who is a massive advocate for fermented probiotic foods for healing gut disorders is one who doesn’t really agree with Kombucha.

She just posted an article last week saying “While some people can and do benefit from wildly fermented foods and drinks, many more cannot tolerate some microorganisms that show up in a wild ferment”.

So, I’d say it’s best to learn to read you own body and make your own decisions on whether your body takes to the Kombucha.

cheers
Jordan

Great episode! I’d love to hear more on leaky gut and look forward to trying to make these at home :)

I came across the Mojo brand of Kombucha tea. They are a S.A company stating that their kombucha tea is not homogenised, pasteurized, synthesized or micro waved. Has anyone heard of this brand or consumed the product?

Yep, I have pretty much kept Mojo in business over the last few years. The ginger one tastes amazing! I made a decision to stop them though after reading sone negative press. I do find that there is a big discrepancy in their batches. Sometimes they are super fermented and so fizzy, they go everywhere when you open them. Othertimes they are flat and taste way more sugary. I guess It’s up to you to make your own choice and see how your body feels.
