We have a double healthtalks episode for you today. It’s a little longer than usual, but I promise it’s worth it. This week we are talking morning routines! In this episode, you will learn …

+ Why it’s so important to carve out a morning routine
+ How each of us kick off our days
+ What you can do if you have kids and hardly any time to yourself

Great segment! I am normally a late riser and always seem to check emails/Facebook/HealthTalks (!) first thing! Will be changing that now!

Also loved Nat’s comment about the tongue scraper – had no idea either that that wasn’t good!

thank you for this reminder…some days it is hectic and I am throwing down my smoothie as I close the door behind me..sometimes it is relaxing and mindful…this has inspired me to take an extra five minutes to sit down and savour my breakfast and the new morning. A new morning, a new day and new opportunities. Also thank you for the smoothie recap – I have let my smoothies slide a little – so I am reinspired and remotivated to get back on the smoothie wagon..thank you

Wow! Creating a morning routine is something I’ve been working on the last few days. Setting my body clock at a time where I can get up early and make the most of my day. So good! Can I just say you ladies are all looking bright and beautiful :)

Great video, thanks! I have two young children so my mornings can be a bit hectic, and vary a bit depending on what kind of night/sleep we’ve all had. However, I always start the morning with some lemon juice in warm water and a smoothie while the kids are eating breakfast. My challenge is to actually sit down and enjoy it rather than drinking it while I’m cleaning the kitchen and making the kids breakfast! My smoothie is made up of some kale and spinach, rice milk, almonds and seeds, flax oil, some fruit, chia seed, maca powder and some protein powder. I’m just wondering what kind of protein powder you recommend? I was using a whey protein for a while, but dairy doesn’t suit me so I’m now using sacha inchi. I’m hoping to start adding a fresh juice to my morning routine too. Great idea about using shower time for affirmations. It’s about the only peaceful time I get in the mornings, and not always! If I manage to get in some exercise the day definitely flows a lot more smoothly.

Great post! I also have a wee little one which can make any kind of routine difficult but I try to stick to this as much as possible.

-Wake between 8-9am
-First thing I do is drink a glass of warm water with half a lemon & a teaspoon or two of Bragg’s Apple Cider Vinegar. Swear by this cocktail!
- Then Breakfast is one or a combination of the following; fresh green juice, super food smoothie, oatmeal with organic seasonal fruit and or gluten free toast with home made almond butter. If I don’t make juice or a smoothie in the morning then we will usually have it in the afternoon.
- Then I make myself a cup of green tea and I am ready for the day.

I would love to add some mediation and or yoga to the morning routine but it can be tough with a toddler! Also love the idea of putting off turning on the laptop – such a time sucker!

Would love to know what time each of you guys go to sleep and wake up each day – I’ve got a lot of the above elements in my morning routine, but main problem is I go to sleep too late and so end up sleeping in!

Buffy » I wake up at 5.30am in summer and then sleep in an hour later through winter when it’s harder to get out of bed. I make sure I’m in bed by 10pm each night though so that I have adequate sleep. This helps so much when it comes to waking up early! I was never a morning person, and thought 7am was too early, but now after a bit of practice I’m wide away at this time each day. x

I really enjoyed this segment. I’ve been enjoying all your information Jess over the last year. I’m a mum of 3, plus running a business from home and realise I need to definitely create some more morning space for myself, as lately I feel like I’m burning out!

Hi Jess, I’m still struggling with waking up early! I am aiming to get up half an hour earlier each week…

I am curious about the clay that you drink first thing in the morning? I also thought that you had to do oil pulling on an empty stomach so how does this work?

Thanx

Lisa » You will get there! I was never a morning person, it just takes persistence and practice. Here is a link to my clay eating article: http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/2012/08/ive-started-eating-clay-you-should-too/ Yep, oil pull before you eat any food. Consuming the clay is fine though. x

Hi Jess,

I love your site! Just a quick question, what type of oil do you use for your oil pulling?

Thanks,
Cindel x

Cindel » Thanks so much Cindel! I use coconut oil for my oil pulling. Check out this post: http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/2012/04/oil-pulling-my-new-morning-ritual/ x

Hi ladies, thanks for another great segment. I loved the suggestions. You are all inspirations for a healthier lifestyle through education and small changes.
Will definitely be getting up earlier to avoid rushing so much.
I have just been watching module 1 lectures from IIN and saw Mel being interviewed during one of the seminars by Joshua. How awesome that you are a part of it. You all have such a shining energy. I very blessed and excited to be in such great company with theother students, and look forward to making a difference in other people’s live by helping them learn about better health through food and holistic approaches to their lives.
Thanks and keep up the great work. :-)

Dear all,

tongue scraping is a tradition Ayurvedic cleansing protocol which in no way at all contradicts the principles traditional chinese medicine. Information is readily available on the Web.

Thanks and best wishes.

Thanks ladies for a fabulous post, love the way you put it ‘Elegant morning routine’, as a mother its not always so easy, but I find if I can rise earlier and have that time for me, I feel so much better.
Smoothie looks yummy, could you tell me what the protein powder is, so many are so full of nasties, I have always avoided them all.
Thanks again xx

Jayne » Hi Jayne, this protein powder is from Sun Warrior. It’s a great brand as is 180 nutrition’s vegan range. Always be sure to choose organic vegan protein powders with no sugars in them! x

I’ve always been a big morning person and I get up with at least an hour if not more before I leave the house. BUT I still always seem to be running out the door. So from now on no more email or facebook and maybe a run or some yoga instead. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hey ladies….
Love your work!
So my morning routine is up at 5.30am in summer……glass lemon juice and ginger in water, then to shower, for body brushing, then shower, then meditate, then yoga, then brekkie, then play with dogs and potter in garden then leave for work at around 7.30am…
it makes such a difference in my day and life if I keep this up…If I don’t, i have less energy, less motiation and less love for myself… and the day just seems to disappear…..
Thank you all so very much for your wonderful inspiraiton…
Love Mid

Thank you, great insight ladies, would love to hear more about tongue scraping please Nat?!

Hi Jess,

I just wanted to ask what great super foods or whole foods you would recommend to someone who is trying to shop on a budget? I am a student however eating whole foods and organic very important to me however obviously some of the super foods are quite expensive from health food stores etc.
Could you suggest any online websites i can purchase these from or any cheaper options with the same health benefits?

thankyou!!!!
Sophie :) ))

Ps my morning routine is wake up stretch, write down goals/daily affirmations, exercise brekky and go!!! I want to incorporate some more meditation however! Jose Silva is fantastic!
cheers!

sorry that was to all of you girls!!!

Sophie » Hey Sophie, my favourite superfood is spirulina and if I had to choose just one I would choose this (best brand is Hawaiian Pacifica Spirulina). Otherwise, Loving Earth also carry great superfoods and you can buy online here: http://www.lovingearth.net/product-groups/3/superfoods xx

Buy organic seeds to sprout. Like cress seeds. It’s so cost effective and just add to salads or soups.
It’s so important how you eat! Not just what you eat. Taking care to cook with good intentions, enjoy your time in the kitchen, , this puts more life force into the food, present the food beautifully. Cook seasonal nourishing food. Chew slowly. Sip a little warm water or weak green tea with meals. That way your meals are superfoods! You don’t need to buy so many expensive things from the health shop.
Seasonal food from your area preferably organic is a superfood! Also it’s cost effective.
Taking care of your digestion is vital or you won’t digest and assimilate the nutrients from your food. You can be healthy without expensive items.
1.Drink ginger and lemon, or fresh mint and lime teas, or good quality honey water. These ingredients are cheap.
2. Make your own nut milks from almonds it’s really cheap.
3. Eat a little seaweed every other day. Cheap and full of calcium.
4.Shop at farmers markets for vegetables for soups.
5. Check out iherb.com for great superfoods and they deliver worldwide.
6. Grind up just a few sunflower, pumpkin and sesame seeds and sprinkle over soups and salads for good fats and extra protein.
7. Taking a spoon of acai powder or spirulina is all very good but it’s far better to prepare good healthy seasonal meals and eat in a lovely atmosphere preferably with friends.
8. I love quinoa, amaranth, aduki beans, red lentils. These are cheap and full of goodness.

Oh oh oh, loving the green smoothy!! Thanks :)

Hi girls, Thanks so much for a great segment. I’m interested to know more about dry brushing before showering. I’ve been looking around for a brush but haven’t purchased yet, as I didn’t know if I should be buying a specific type? Or steering clear of particular types? Hopeing you can help. Thanks so much, Megan

Megan » Thanks Megan! Just look for a natural bristle brush – you can pick them up at most health stores. We actually have a segment on dry body brushing coming up soon, so stay tuned! x

Thanks for the tip about emails/phones/technology! So unnecessary first thing in the morning unless there really is an urgent matter to attend to. I wake up, check my phone for emails, Facebook, Twitter & Instagram (thank goodness I’m not on Pinterest!!), get dressed for the gym, have my green juice with chia seeds, then have a coffee, go to the gym or walk, return home, shower, make a green smoothie & get into the morning. I always prioritise me first thing in the morning, otherwise excuses creep in and the day disappears. But will do my best to get off my phone until my morning routine is done.

Hi Ladies, thanks so much for this video. Its fun to see you all so chipper!! I was wondering about Protein powders. If you have your green smoothies, you get enough protein in green leafy veggies and all the veggies I eat throughout the day. This way I stay away from Protein powders that I’m not sure what all it contains. I only want to put actual foods that I can handle, wash, chop, grind, etc. I don’t want to rely on a company that make a protein product to get my necessary nutrients. I believe there is too much hype on making sure you get enough protein.

Mary E. » Thanks so much Mary! I tend to agree with you. I eat a plant-based diet and don’t feel the need to include a protein powder at all. My body doesn’t need anything extra. I do have spirulina every day though and that helps to give me amazing energy. However, I do know other people who work better with an organic, plant-based, all-natural protein powder. The Sun Warrior one is a good brand :) x

Oil pulling and Body brush then a 10minute warm sesame oil full body self massage before jumping in the shower. I then let the hot water push the oil further into the dermal layers. I only use soap on the sweaty areas of body. The oil nourishes skin, aids immunity, grounds the body and mind. I drink lemon water. Then I am ready for yoga!
Breakfast afterwards is something warm like quinoa cereal and homemade chai tea.

Then I get ready to leave the house cycling to school or on days off walking in nature to get sunshine : ).

Karen » Beautiful! x

I greatly appreciate this segment. When discussing my morning routine with friends or acquaintances, they just cannot believe everything that I do in the morning and consider it too time consuming. It’s nice to hear of other like minded people who too, have an elegant morning routine. I’ve found it to be an essential part of my day that makes a difference in everything I do. Since adapting the following routine I’ve become more productive in my day, I’m in a better mood, and most importantly, I feel kinder, gentler and more loving since i start my day with kindness and self love.
5:50 am – alarm goes off, lie in bed for 10 minutes saying affirmations, and setting positive intentions for the day
6am- oil pulling for 20 minutes while dry body brushing/hot body scrub
6:10am Quick shower to rinse off dead skin cells and toxins that have been pulled from dry body brushing/hot body scrub (still oil pulling)
6:20am- Rinse out oil and brush teeth thoroughly.
6:25 am- I them make a mug of warm water with lemon and cayenne pepper. I follow this with a cup of green tea.
6:40am – Wake my 5 year old up and prep her breakfast and get her ready for school. While I get her things ready I make myself a green juice.
7:30am- Daughter is on the school bus and I work out for an hour
8:30am -Breakfast
And there is my elegant morning routine that makes such a wonderful difference in my day.
Thank you again for a great segment and I love seeing other peoples comments and knowing I’m not alone in what others may consider a “time consuming” morning routine.

Connie » This is awesome Connie! Thanks for sharing x

I’ve just started adding green juice and smoothies to my morning routine and ideally I would love to do all of the following time permiting!

- Wake at 6.15am and have a lemon and ginger tea
- 20mins of breath work, 20mins of yoga and 20mins of meditation (or variations depending on time)
- Make green juice/smoothie
- Shower and drink juice
- Breakfast of oatmeal, avocado on rye etc
- Start work at 9am (at home)!

I am going to try and do this when I can and as shorter version when I have to be out of the house earlier.

So much good info in this segment! The best part for me is the positivity that radiates out of you ladies. The smiles and laughter are infectious. I wish I could start every morning with a health talk like this.

Hi, thanks , would love to be on your Newsletter.

I adore adore adore the Health Talks! And yes to the affirmation – of course we deserve and should treat ourselves to an elegant morning routine! xx!

Going to bed + waking up early…. yes.
Avoiding the laptop 1st thing in the morning… yes.
Early morning exercise… yes.
Juices for breakfast… yes.

I don’t really believe in superfoods or protein powders… I feel that fresh, Raw Fruits + Vegetables contain all the carbs, fat, protein, vitamins + minerals that humans/primates need + have thrived on for millions of years.

If your diet consists of primarily Raw Fruits + Vegetables it will naturally be low in fat + low in protein (and no animal protein!) which is especially important whenever cancer is involved (ref: The 801010 Diet + The China Study)

Have you read ‘The 801010 Diet’ yet, Jess..? ;-)
Come on, get with the gameplan… you need to read it if only to find out what all the fuss is about! ;-

And your smile is soooo gorgeous!
Mmmmm! Mmmmm! Mmmmm! Takes my breath away… ;-)

Thanks for the video, I loved it!
Oh, and I love the necklace Mel is wearing on the video. Could you tell me what brand it is?

thanks!

Jennifer » Thanks Jennifer! Do you mean the yellow one? That’s actually my necklace and it’s just a cheapie from Diva. x

Sam gowing iz the best. She lives in the real world.

Hi Ladies, A topic I’d love to learn more about is detoxing the body from the bad stuff the Pill puts into us. I’ve been off it for 2years now ( after being on it for 12years) and have just listened to Jess’ interview with Dr Sherrill Sellman and it’s freaked me out!!!! Are there foods, recipies, teas etc we should be devouring to help our bodies get rid of a decade of nasty stuff? Chloe x

Awesome segment – I loved hearing from Nat, as I am mum, stepmum and big sister to 4 kids aged 1 – 16 at home, and I find myself feeling at a loss with carving out any kind of routine let alone one that actually finds me honouring myself at all!! It’s just not simple with children!!! lol I would love to hear more from Nat in the future about looking after ourselves while looking after kids because it seems pretty impossible most of the time. This is my biggest hurdle – trying to relate all the awesome advice and info you give, to my own lifestyle with little ones.

Hi Jess,

I was watching the clip and really noticed when they zoomed right into your face when you were speaking, just how beautiful and shiny your hair is. Probably not the best post to comment under for hair enquiries, but i am just wondering if you have any tips on how to keep it looking and feeling healthy, as well as your colour-do you bleach it? I have stopped bleaching my hair because it is just a toxic feeling on my scalp, but your colour looks natural. If you dont mind me asking-what shampoo and hair products you use? Are some better than others?

And, thanks for the morning tips…sounds really peaceful for the am! :)

Best Regards

Lana » Hi Lana, ha ha thank you so much!! I don’t really do anything to my hair. I use Mukti shampoo and conditioner, and every few months I’ll put coconut oil through it as a hair mask. I don’t have my hair coloured or bleached at all – it’s totally natural. Luckily the regrowth look is in these days :) I really think that eating such a clean diet helps my hair to look healthy – it all comes from the inside out. xx

Hi Jess.. I´m loving your wellness warrior approach…I´ve had the “now I´m a mamma I have less flow in my morning” excuse.. Now this segment has encouraged me to find that extra time in the morning..Whilst I´m still fitting in many of the physical elegant morning routines..lemon water, smoothies, dry skin brushing etc etc.. I had stopped focusing on my meditation and affirmation..now I am inspired to get this into my elegant morning routine again.I felt inspired to hear your `love for the day`..is it an app..or do you have a link for me..it sounds like the quick alternative when I have a little one to attend to in the morning also :) )
Thank you,
Keep Shining

Leilani » Thanks so much Leilani! I was talk about The Daily Love. I subscribe to Mastin’s newsletter’s and read them each morning on my phone: http://thedailylove.com/ xx

I enjoyed watching the video, The smoothie looks delicious. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Jess!
I am so flipping happy I found your website! I discovered it through greenthickies.com. I have a question about the clay you drink. What kind of clay and what is the benefit?
I live in the U.S.
Thanks!

Heather

Heather » Hi Heather, thanks so much! Here is a blog post I wrote about eating clay: http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/2012/08/ive-started-eating-clay-you-should-too/ x

Hi Jess, I just wanted to say thank you, and all the other ladies of Health Talks! I love the episodes, inspiring, informative and well put together.
I am studying to be a naturopath and when my studies are getting a little heavy or tiresome, I have a break and watch an episode and it helps inspire me to keep on keeping on! Thank you!
You ladies help me see the bigger picture of why I am doing a Chemistry exam soon! Haha
Thanks again
Jasmin

I love this post! The hardest obstacles for me have been the winter weather and getting on my laptop too early in the morning (such a hard habit to break). Here’s the routine I’ve been working on:

Wake, enjoy lemon water, green tea & read or journal
Yoga and meditation, about 1 hour
Get washed, ready & dressed for the day
Breakfast: 1/2 cup green smoothie and gluten-free toast or oatmeal with fresh berries.
And I’m ready for the day!
