A Healthy Trade: Swapping This For That
![featured_image[4]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/featured_image4.jpg)
If I had just five second to stand up on a global soap box and declare something to the masses, it would be this: Being healthy does not mean deprivation. In order to adopt a clean and healthy diet, you don’t actually have to give anything up. It’s simply about educating yourself and swapping out junk foods by replacing them with foods that are natural, whole, nutritious and way more satisfying.
I never go hungry. I never have cravings that I cannot satisfy. And I never stray from my super clean diet. Never.
Here’s how it’s done …
SWAP THIS: COW’S MILK
FOR THIS: NUT MILK
![nut_milk[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/nut_milk1.jpg)
Dairy is acid-forming, mucus forming, difficult to digest, and it contains growth hormones, antibiotics, and a protein that switches on and accelerates tumour growth. Nut milk, on the other hand, is high in beneficial fats, high in calcium, easier on your digestion, better for your thighs, and super yum. Click here to learn how to make it.
SWAP THIS: CHOCOLATE
FOR THIS: RAW CACAO
![cacao[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/cacao1.jpg)
Chocolate is good for you, but not the type that is full of cow’s milk, refined sugar and loads of chemicals. Raw cacao is chocolate in its pure unadulterated form, and it’s a nutrition-packed superfood. Click here to read all about it.
SWAP THIS: SOFT DRINK
FOR THIS: COCONUT WATER
![coconut_water[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/coconut_water1.jpg)
Soft drink should be illegal. It’s full of so much sugar that it should really be considered a drug. It’s of absolutely no value to the body, and actually robs you of nutrients. Coconut water is a much better choice. It’s been hyped up recently for a reason – it’s full of electrolytes, is naturally hydrating, it’s super high in potassium, it’s alkalising … the list of benefits is lengthy.
SWAP THIS: COFFEE
FOR THIS: DANDELION & CHICROTY ROOT TEA
![dandelion_tea[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/dandelion_tea1.jpg)
Coffee is a drug, and when we become dependent on it for energy we know that it’s doing damage. It messes with your adrenals big time, blocks absorption of certain minerals and wreaks havoc on your immune system. A great substitute is roasted dandelion & chicory root tea. I like a brand called Bonvit. Click here to read about all of its many benefits.
SWAP THIS: CANOLA OIL
FOR THIS: COCONUT OIL
![coconut_oil[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/coconut_oil1.jpg)
When it comes to cooking, coconut oil is the only oil I will use. It has a high smoke point, which means that it doesn’t turn rancid upon heating (unlike most other plant oils – even olive oil) Click here to read why coconut oil is the healthiest of all oils.
SWAP THIS: WHITE PASTA
FOR THIS: MUNG BEAN PASTA, BLACK BEAN PASTA, OR QUINOA & BROWN RICE PASTA
![mung_bean_pasta[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/mung_bean_pasta1.jpg)
White pasta is made from grains that have been refined to the point that they are devoid of all nutrients, making it a carbohydrate that converts straight into sugar without delivering any goodness. I love pasta though, and found some awesome healthy alternatives that taste great. These are mung bean pasta, black bean pasta and quinoa & brown rice pasta.
SWAP THIS: WHITE RIGHT
FOR THIS: BROWN RICE
![brown_rice[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/brown_rice1.jpg)
As with white pasta, white rice has also been stripped of its nutrients leaving nothing but a white carb that becomes sugar as soon as it hits your mouth. Brown rice is the stuff your body is after – it’s what white rice was before someone tampered with it.
SWAP THIS: WHITE BREAD
FOR THIS: RYE BREAD
![rye_bread[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/rye_bread11.jpg)
I’m sure you can notice a pattern here. For a grain to be white it means it’s had all of its nutrients taken away from it. White bread is no exception, and white bread usually also comes with a host of chemicals. Just read this. My favourite alternative is rye bread made from nothing besides rye flour, water and yeast. It’s dense, sure, but it satisfies my craving for bread every now and then.
SWAP THIS: CHEESE
FOR THIS: NUT CHEESE
![nut_cheese[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/nut_cheese1.jpg)
Cow’s cheese comes under the same umbrella as cow’s milk. A much healthier alternative is cheese made from nuts. I make an awesome cashew cream, a cashew sour cream, and a cashew cheesecake. Click here for more on that.
SWAP THIS: WHITE SUGAR
FOR THIS: NATURAL SWEETENERS
![dates[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/dates11.jpg)
Your body considers white sugar the devil. It is that damaging to it. It’s addictive, robs your system of nutrients, messes with your blood sugar levels, and promotes pretty much every disease. Instead, choose sweetness provided to us by Mother Nature. My favourites are honey, maple syrup, dates, stevia, and coconut sugar.
SWAP THIS: DESSERTS
FOR THIS: RAW DESSERTS
![raw_desserts[1]](http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/raw_desserts1.jpg)
And finally, when you start eating a healthy diet you absolutely do not have to give up desserts! Raw desserts are made from ingredients like nuts, seeds, oats, almond meal, coconut, cacao, dates, avocado, chia seeds, and super foods. And they are sweetened with natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, stevia, coconut palm sugar and brown rice syrup. There are heaps of examples here.
I buy all of these ingredients from my local organic food store. If you’re on the Sunshine Coast, this is The Natural Food Store in Forest Glen.
What else do you think should be on this list? What healthy alternatives have you swapped over to?
Positive affirmation for the day: My mind is open and accepting of what is in front of me.

Hi Jess, how do you feel about konjac for pasta and noodle alternatives?
Hi Vanessa, as long as it doesn’t contain any other ingredients I’m okay with them. Some have additives that I don’t agree with. 100% organic whole foods is what we’re after. x
Jess, Is nutritional yeast good for you?
Hi Linda, I’m yet to use nutritional yeast and honestly haven’t looked into it much. But I’ve heard great things about it. I don’t think it’s unhealthy – heaps of healthy foodies are into it. Just do your research and then decide if you feel it’s good for you. x
It’s fabulous! It makes things taste cheesey – I use it in my nut cheese. Check out Supercharged Foods as Lee Holmes uses it a lot in her recipes
Nutritional yeast is great! It is an excellent vitamin B source for vegans, and is really versatile. I sprinkle it on salads, add it to dehydrated crackers that I make, and use to make nute cheese taste even cheesier. Make sure to get a good brand- Bragg do a good quality nutritional yeast. And don’t confuse nutritionakl yeast with brewer’s yeast or baker’s yeast- they are different!
It’s almost shocking how easy it is to get away from the unhealthy, processes version of foods when you put your mind it. I really like how you laid it out so straight-forwardly.
A great article Jess, thank you. I also like seed milks. See my link. xxoo
I’m a big fan of swapping/substituting instead of cutting things out cold turkey! I find it is easier and more sustainable when making a healthy change. Thanks Jess
Hi Jess,
I am trying to eradicate cows milk from my family’s diet and am wondering about using rice milk?
Malinda » This is a good one too! Just make sure it’s organic and unsweetened. It’s a matter of personal taste when it comes to dairy-free milks. I also like the taste of oat milk. xx
Brilliant! x
I LOVE coconut water and have just got into cooking with Coconut Oil too. Still haven’t tried any Raw Food desserts but I think it’s time I pay a visit to the local organic food store. x
Jess, what a godsend you are! For the past few years ive been making small but significant changes to my families diet. Since I discovered your blog, its been made so much easier! We still have ‘treats’ (raw vanilla cake….oh my) and never go hungry. Ive adopted the idea that if you add more of the good stuff, there’ll be less room for the junk.
On top of all of this, you have inspired me to challenge myself, love myself and enjoy myself more. Soon i’ll be starting a degree in health science so I can keep learning about food and hopefully share my knowledge in the positive, non critical way you do.
Go girl! You are a great role model and i look forward to reading more from you.
Xx
I have heard a lot of controversy about raw cacao. I have used it daily 2 Tablespoons a day but I have read that it is really toxic for you and have decided not to continue buying it… Have you heard of this? I am not sure if I believe this but I sure would not want to do anything that’s harmful to me http://www.living-foods.com/articles/toxiccacao.html
going to have to chase down those alternate pastas – thanks for the heads up Jess
Hi Jess,
I absolutely love your website, attitude and posts! Thank you
I’ve shared it with so many friends and family members. These are great examples of swaps and trades. I am vegetarian and I also limit my dairy intake to organic, whole (not reduced fat) cheeses and yoghurts; I don’t drink cow’s milk.
My greatest weakness is ice-cream..I love the stuff! A few alternatives I’ve found are “Coco-Luscious” ice-cream http://www.cocoluscious.com.au/ and my latest treat is half a frozen banana, chopped into pieces and dipped into organic coconut oil..delicious!
Amy xx
Jess I was surprised to see your comment about coffee – I don’t drink it (never liked the stuff!) but I thought you used it for coffee enemas.
Jade » Hi Jade, coffee has a totally different effect on the body when you drink it as when you put it up your bottom. When you drink it you’re digesting it and it is distributed to your cells. In an enema it just targets the liver and bile ducts and is not distributed into your system. x
Jess this is a fabulous post.often people need guidance and led in the right direction, and what a better way than giving alternatives. Thumbs up
Lovely to see a visual of healthy food alternatives. I like to use date puree in my baking instead of sugar. Put 2 cups of medjool dates and 2 cups of warm purified water into a food processor and blend until smooth and creamy looking. Enjoy xx
Seeing that this would make it a liquid now how do you subsitute it in baking?
So true Jess and s simple. I don’t miss any of the old “foods” I used to eat at all and I never ever feel like I have missed out!
I LOVE Zucchini pasta with homemade pasta sauce it has changed my life (and tummy). So much easier to digest than regular pasta (plus I don’t eat grains) and is always a crowd favourite with my ‘non’ healthy friends!
Hi Jess! I love your blog so much but have never commented before.
I have a question for you and was wondering what you would recommend…ok, so I know this is random, but
I am wondering what you recommend for whitening your teeth. You have the most gorgeous smile, and I am just curious what you use and what you would recommend. I use Weleda salt toothpaste, but am looking for a natural form of whitening without all the yucky chemicals. Thanks so much!!
Thanks so much Lily! I don’t do anything to whiten my teeth anymore but I used to brush them with 3% hydrogen peroxide every now and then. Just be sure to rinse with water afterwards! x
Hi I use bicarbonate and lemon to whiten my teeth. Rub bicarbonate over your teeth then run over with lemon. Whitens your teeth and lasts for ages.
Hi Jess – what’s the deal with goats milk? Would you recommend it?
Hi Laura, goats milk is much similar in composition to human milk than cow’s milk, but I’m still of the opinion that vegan milks are a better choice. Goat’s milk is made for baby goats. However, it’s still a much better choice than cow’s milk. x
This is a great post to show people who think that eating not just vegan, but mostly whole, unprocessed foods must be boring! I love how you prove it’s easy and that you don’t feel deprived of anything! I just started using Kelp noodles in place of pasta. Have you tried those?
Thank you! Yes, love kelp noodles!
Hi Rachael,
Can I ask where you have found the kelp noodles? I have been looking for them (around Brisbane) to use in recipes but have so-far been unable to find them anywhere
Thanks for the great post Jess
Corinne
Hi Jess, another great post. The only ingredient I haven’t tried is Nut Cheese – In fact I never even knew this existed.
I would love for you to do a post on ‘sugar’. I use to eat a lot of ‘natural sugar’ like dates etc but have tried to stay well away from them after reading Sweet Poison and SW’s I quit sugar. Would love to know your point of view on this one.
Thank you! My opinion is that we don’t need to be cutting sugars out completely. I’m a big fan of fruit, dates and natural sweeteners … however, only in small amounts. Going nuts on maple syrup is still not great for the body, but eating as a treat every now and then is fine and totally guilt free in my books! I don’t think we need to be depriving ourselves of these sweets if they are totally natural, unrefined, organic etc. xx
I was curious about your opinion on sugar, as well! I’m finding that sugar is super addictive for myself–even in the form of dates and sweet potatoes, unleash the beast! Started writing a draft on my past addiction to Splenda, which is now Stevia ‘addiction’ lesser of two evils, but nonetheless a habit. Would love to see a post on sugar and your opinions!
Hi Jess, I couldn’t agree more with you about soft drinks. They are poison in a can. I was just wondering if you have any recommendations for those of us allergic to all nuts, all stone fruit, soy, rice and corn? Trying to switch to the healthier option can sometimes be a challenge when you are already so limited with what you can have. Thanks!
Hi Jacinta, sure! Are you allergic to coconuts too? I would recommend looking into quinoa instead of rice, seed milks or oat milk, avocado for the “cheese” part of the cheesecake and a base of rolled oats and shredded coconut. xx
Aloha Jess, do you have a recipe for the rye bread? Are the rye flour and yeast organic? Thanks for another terrific post.
Hi Jess,
Thank you for your ever inspirational post. Dairy is not only incompatible for our bodies, but ethically very disturbing. I recently read an article about Bobby calving, provided by an organic dairy farm in Tassie. For every glass of milk, cheese, butter, yoghurt, there is a hell of a lot of pain and suffering to mother and calf.
I look forward to you blog always! Xx
Tea, tea, tea! i read somewhere that herbal tea alkalizes your body so i kind of swapped normal water with tea and it feels so great! i start my day with drinking 1 liter of warm tea instead of cold water and thats the best morning routine i’ve ever had.
I dont have any stomacheaches anymore and even if i cant find the time to have a proper breakfast my belly doesnt feel that empty.
Hi Jess,
I’ve recently swapped many of my foods over to more healthy ones. As for sugar, is Agave nectar okay?
Jude » Hi Jude, I’m not a fan of agave. Check out this post: http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/2011/05/why-i-was-wrong-to-recommend-agave-nectar/ x
Hi Jess, Just wondering if you have a recipe for the delicious cheesecake shown above? Thank you! Emily
Emily » Hi Emily, the recipe for this amazing cake is in this e-book by my friend Paul Jarvis: http://eatawesome.ca/ x
Good morning Jess,
I am wondering what the difference is in using coffee for enema’s and drinking it?
In the article today on things to switch it says coffee is bad and it should be replaced with teas?
Thank you for all the wonderful nutrition you expose people to, look forward to reading your daily news.
Gayla
Heya Jess! You are such an inspiration to me! Im surrounded by unhealthy foods and those who love to eat them therefore it is such a challenge to stray from them. Question: does honey need to be organic if it says 100% pure? Thanks
much love!
Melissa » Thank you!! Yes, always look for raw organic honey. If it’s raw though chances are it is organic too. xx
One of my favourite swaps is hot chips for turnip or sweet potato chips
I adore this list of food swaps. Along with this list I would also add “compassion” because changing to these foods from conventional foods takes time – there will most likely be bumps in the journey (there were/are for me, but I’m learning!). Thank you for the reminder that we can take what we love and find a healthier option that loves us back even more.
Hello Jessica,
im reading your blog a few months now, but never wrote a comment. But i really enjoyed reading this post und just wanted to say how much i admire you und your story.
I do have a question (i first wanted to write a mail because i dont want this comment to look like an advertising (its not!! ive got nothing to do with mymuesli), but didnt found any emailadress). Im thinking about creating my on müsli at this website http://uk.mymuesli.com/ ,but i was overhelmed by the amount of different ingredients und just wanted to ask you how your müsli would look like
In a lot of ways im already living an healthy life, but sometimes i just cant take myself away from chocolate and coffe in the afternoon! I hope with your tips und by reading your blog futher on, i do get out of this dependencies!
Lovely Greetings from Germany,
Julia
What about Coconut Milk? I am looking for something other than cow milk for my smoothies, and read somewhere that coconut milk is good?
chrisney howard » Yes coconut milk is great! xx
Hi Jess
Are you able to post something about what you eat in a typical day now that you have completed the Gerson journey?
Lindsey
Hi Jess,
Fab post! We don’t really have an excuses not to eat healthily.
Where do you get your information on dairy from? I’m looking for good hard evidence against dairy but can’t seem to find any. It would be great if you could please send some my way.
Emma xx
oops! *any excuses
Emma » Sure, there are tonnes! Check these out for starters.

Thanks so much Jess! I’ve got The China Study but I’m after something I can quickly refer people to on the net. I’ll check your links out
xx
A great movie to watch is called Forks Over Knives. It talks about the terrifying effects that animal proteins (meat and dairy) are having on humans. Changed my life. I have since given up eating meat and dairy except cheese (and I am working on this). 3 months in I havn’t been hungary, had cravings, and for the first time in 5 years the peri menipausal symptoms have virtually dissappeared, even my cycle is back to normal!
My 15 year old daughter and I have become vegetarian – almost vegan!
I am so excited to try the nut cheese!!! This may be the hot ticket to push me over the edge.
Hi Jess – Long time lover of your blog but first time commenter.
This post has me happy and hyped! I’m committed to making further changes to my eating this year but so often find myself falling back into the comfortable ‘it’s too difficult and/or overwhelming zone”. This post is ease filled and inspiring – I had no idea I could make nut milk so easily and inexpensively! Yay!
The only thing I’m not ready to part with (yet) is my one cup a day habit but everything else looks easy peasy.
Thanks for helping me bust through some of my own excuses
kirri » Thanks so much for commenting Kiri! Yay for your first one. That’s awesome. xx
Hi Jess, this is awesome. I’m a daily coffee drinker so I’m definitely gonna try the chicory root tea. Do you have any healthy tea suggestions? Is matcha green tea healthy or roobios? News had also come out not long ago that there’s a ton of arsenic in rice, sometimes more so in brown rice than white rice, do you think this is a great concern or should we just avoid rice altogether? Also, is rye bread okay for those with gluten sensitivities, which everyone nowadays seem to have. Thank you!
Another great post! Your posts are always inspiring and reaffirming that I’m on the right track to becoming a Wellness Warrior Goddess! My spirit always feel good after visiting your site and that is saying a lot these days!
Lily. You can also whiten your teeth by coconut oil or sesame oil pulling. Take a mouthful of oil (you might want to start with teaspoon and build up) and swish in your mouth for up to 20 minutes. It will dissolve stains and draw out toxins. (But not a good idea if you have lots of amalgam fillings)
Excellent article, Jess. I loved the pictures, too. BRAVO!!!
