How To Stop Taking The Pill Without Getting Acne (Or Going Crazy)

GUEST POST BY DR NATALIE KRINGOUDIS.
The pill has been used for many things. For something that was designed to prevent pregnancy, it is the most prescribed medicine in the world.
It’s used for reproductive disorders, commonly endometriosis and poly cystic ovarian syndrome, it’s now believed to help prevent uterine and cervical cancer (I’ll touch on why this is a fib shortly) and ovarian cysts. It’s used for treatment of pre-menstrual symptoms, for irregular periods, heavy periods, painful periods, heavy bleeding and acne. Most women have taken it at one point in their lives, many for most of their ‘fertile’ years. I’ve spoken a lot about the pill, and wrote a post last week discussing If Not The Pill, Then What? And What’s The Deal With The New Pill Yaz Flex. The feedback from these posts has been phenomenal – my inbox is totally busting.
Here’s what you want to know:
Why do I break out when I stop taking the pill and what can I do to stop it?
Firstly – all those things I mentioned (endometriosis, PCOS and so on) are all signs your hormones are out of whack big time. They are all treatable. They are signs your body isn’t working, and the solution is all about finding somebody to help you get that back in working order and on the road to a better you.
Secondly – before I get into pimple mode, we must know that synthetic hormones like those found in HRT and the pill are now being linked to cancer. If you want to hear more about that – I’ve got a podcast for you here.
So you want to stop taking the pill but you want it to be easy. I get it.
When you stop taking the pill, one of two things happen. For some, nothing happens. Big fat nothing. No period, no acne, no fertile mucus. Zip. Zilch. Nothing. Not good news – because hormonally you are a wreck. There is nothing going on and until you get that sorted, nothing will.
On the other hand, your body can go into a frenzy as it tries to balance itself out. Remember, the pill was designed to prevent pregnancy – it literally flattens your hormones and disrupts the delicate dance they were designed to do. Imagine a heart monitor like the type you might get hooked up to in hospital. Now imagine it flat-lining. There you go – that’s what is going on when you’re taking the pill.
When acne arises post pill, it is important to establish what part of your body is screaming out. Undoubtedly it is your hormones talking – communicating to you, in the form of the location of your pimples and the nature of them. This helps us decide how to best treat them. For example, large, painful blind type pimples are more of an indication of blockage, rather than pussy and infected ones indicating damp (turbidity/toxicity) build up in the body. How we treat these in the clinic will differ from person to person, determined by their presentation. Of course, this works because it is an individualised approach.
That said, there are a few things you can do to help with that transition. Of course, my best advice is to be prepared and well supported when coming off the pill. Find a practitioner who has experience in this area. These tips are appropriate right across the board.
1. Get onto the best multi vitamin and fish oil money can buy.
The pill zaps the living bajoongers out of you. You must get your body back on track nutrient wise – so topping up with as much vitamins and minerals as much as possible is key. Look for practitioner grade products. They might cost a little more, but they are well worth it. A general multi is okay when in good health, but it won’t replace what is lost whilst on the pill.
Fish oil is so good for everything. In this case, it takes good care of your skin. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, there are some great alternatives to fish oil (chia seeds, flaxseed oil, spirulina, hemp seeds etc. are all high in skin-assisting omega 3s).
2. Clean your diet right up for at least four weeks – do a mini cleanse and get your gut happy.
This is ultimately the pivot of your health. If it is working and fueling you, the rest of you fires on all cylinders. This may mean cutting down on meats and dairy and absolutely avoiding processed foods. A good alkaline cleanse can be key (check out the Spring Body Cleanse I’m running via my blog, set to commence Oct 22nd. It’s very basic, but I’ve done the hard work for you!). Meat and dairy can cause inflammation, contributing to a host of issues including acne.
3. Get a good zinc supplement.
Zinc is essential for beautiful skin. Or speak to your health practitioner – they may have a specific formula for you. We have one we regularly recommend to women coming off the pill.
4. Introduce a cleansing herbal supplement and go crazy on it.
Better still, blend your own using fresh leaves and herbs from your garden. Think cleansing and soothing – so things like peppermint, nettle and dandelion. Make tea drinking a priority.
5. Sleep for your hormones.
Going to sleep (not just to bed!) before 11pm is vital to keep your hormones happy. If you sleep too little, you will find your body craving foods as it aims to regain the balance – it means you’ll feel lousy, eat poorly and probably more than you usually would.
6. Before bed, take your pro-biotic to keep your gut ticking and happy.
It does wonders for you and your skin.
It can be useful to talk your situation over with your practitioner, but this advice is a great start to a smooth transition coming off the pill. Remember, listen to what your body is saying and allow it to go through the motions as it readjusts to the ‘new you’ post pill. It doesn’t have to be terrible. Who knows, the reason you first went on the pill might not actually be relevant anymore anyway! Puberty delivers some interesting things.
Have you ditched the pill? What was your experience while coming off it? Are you still deciding whether it is the right move for you?

ahhh thank you! i came off the pill 2 years ago and i only got a period back after 18 months of being off it, and my skin has been going crazy.. but the pill is apparently only just getting out of my system now… can you believe that after 24 months?!
i would NEVER recommend anyone go on this pill it messes with our bodies in so many bad ways.. it contributed to me personally having cellulite, fluid retention, constant bloating, extreme irritability, vitamin B deficiencies, anxiety … god ever since i came off it i have never felt better – apart from the skin issues, but psychologically – its one of the best things i have ever done ditching the pill!
thank you for this advice xxx
After years of my daughter battling with “acne” even being on antibiotics for a while in her very early teens I took her to see a naturopath for her skin problems. My daughter was advised to take a compoud of Arctium and Zinc with a practitioners grade of fish oil and probotic (yes these things are very expensive) this all did wonders for her skin for a number of years however unfortunately in her late teens it stopped having little to no effect on her skin. She succumbed to trying the pill (as per her doctors advise) and has been on it for two years now. I’m not happy about her taking the pill and nor is she. Why did the natural therapy stoped taking effect on her skin? It was great for a very long time.
We are constantly changing – our hormones are very different early teens than late teens and for this reason, what was effective initially may not have been a few years later. Unfortunately the acne is a symptom of underlying hormone imbalance.
I have a great cure for cellulite… apple cider vinegar! You are right – there isn’t enough education which is my purpose on this planet it seems!
Do you take the vinegar or rub it on? How much do you use?
Natalie, thanks for an amazing post! I’ve been on the pill for 15 years and I recently decided it’s time to finally break free. This has motivated me. Question about the cellulite and ACV connection = what’s your treatment and have you personally had success with this? I’m a lean and fit girl but have increasing cellulite in the butt/thigh areas…would love to know your secret!
Aaaaah! Seriously? Getting rid of cellulite is as simple as apple cider vinegar… and how? Taken internally? Rubbed on? Both? And why does it work?
What pro-biotic would you recommend? I’ve run out of the one I was taking and would love your suggestion. I’ve been off the pill for about 4 or 5 months and while it seems to be improving, I’m still fighting the acne monster.
Thank you! ~ Celena
Metagenics is my preference.
I was just about to email Jess to ask you to write a post on this! That’s a little freaky!
I came off the pill 6 mnths ago and my skin is still going mental.
I am extremely healthy , I am a whole food vegan and exercise regularly. I’m still confused as to why I am getting such Terrible acne. My periods haven’t returned so that may be the issue…
Great post!
After not taking the pill for nearly ten years, I recently made enquiries with my Dr on the best form of contraception and she gave me the pill. I have then had 4 months of hesitation about taking it. Last week I started taking it, my system has already become a little crazy, a usual 4 day period is now into day 9 and I have had a headache for 3 days (which I normal don’t suffer from). The last two days I have felt like my head has been in a cloud not to mention the lethargy. I came across your articles you had written about the Pill only yesterday, and thought to myself WHAT AM I DOING….deep down I never really wanted to do this but after a lengthy discussion with my GP this was sold to me as the best option. Clearly my months of hesitation in taking it was really telling me something!!
Never second guess your intuition. x
Thank you so much for this post!! I ditched the pill 12 months ago and have had terrible acne ever since. I do most of the things (except for the zinc, which I can’t wait to try) that you mention in the post but can you tell me how much stress plays a role in balancing hormones and have you seen people with very healthy diets fix hormones with stress relief?
Thank you again
Stress is a killer! Introduce something to help move the cortisol out of your body – acupuncture, exercise, yoga AND sleep.
I have been off the pill for 9 months, my periods are still hit or miss. I am unsure about my fertility now. But exercising and eating healthy are still a priority along with tea and herbs.
Please write an article about this sorta issue. I thought I was the only one until reading your posts.
It’s on my list. x
I suggest a good brand of krill oil for clearing up skin.. My is over $80 for 60 caps but very worth it. I also recommend Maca Power and Chia seeds. As for cleanser pure jojoba oil is amazing.
Thanks for this post! I’ve been thinking about coming off the pill recently. I’ve been with my boyfriend for 5 years, and don’t really want to use condoms or be on the pill… what other methods do you suggest that don’t effect my body’s hormones? Or is this just wishful thinking? Thanks
Have a look at Natalie’s website Em, there is plenty of articles to help you with this. But the long and short of it, is – pull out!
Sam has it!
Em you might like last weeks post here on Jess site.
I’m planning on finishing the pack I’m on now, then ditching the pill. I just got fitted for a diaphragm. Sounds out dated, but they’re still very effective, and they were the #1 choice by women before the pill was introduced. I have yet to try it (still 2 more weeks on the pill) and then we’ll see! You can’t feel it when it’s in, so that’s already a step up from condoms!
Exactly what so many of us need to hear. My girlfriends and I talk about this for hours. Seriously it’s such a hot topic. I have tried a few times and have had terrible terrible acne, worse than before I went on it. Especially around my cheeks, chin and jawline. I am going to give it another go and follow your advice. Thanks so much, will be sharing this with my GF’s.
Erhmegerd! Great post lovely! I recently went off the pill after taking it religiously for 8 years. Turns out it was wreaking havoc on my heart and making my blood pressure do some crazy things!! Scary stuff
(
Natalie, I wish you were in Brisbane, I would love to come and see you!!! I have been off the pill for maybe a year now (can’t remember), I have a regular period but my skin is just crazy. I have been working hard with my beauty therapist at my beauty salon in regards to getting the right skin care, make up etc, but it is still not as good as I would like so I am going to see a naturopath later in the week. Thank you for your amazing articles, they really affirm what I thought 12 months ago when I decided to come off it….actually it may have been one of your articles that did it!!
I went back on the pill about 6 months ago as my dermatologist insisted I take it. I had previously been on and off it for 10 years as an acne treatment plan. It never worked anyway! I only lasted about 3 months on it before I again decided it was just so wrong for me, so I stopped taking it. It’s interesting that this post came up today as it’s the first day I’ve had my period since coming off it and BOY do I feel completely whacked. Not even my morning Yoga could bring me back to true centre! I am so glad I’m off it and can’t believe I ever was prescribed it at such a young age (14). I am most definitely taking charge of my hormones from now on and will get help from natural therapies if need be.
are you vegan or vegetarian?
Thank you for this post. This is an idea I have been toying with for a little while so the post has come at the perfect time for me!
Great advise- this happened to me 18 months ago when I came off after years and years on it and I only wish someone had forewarned me!! The docs never tell this side -ever! I saw a naturopath who advised all of the above and it started to work- she made me a herbal cleansing tincture also. in one way it was a blessing because that was the start of my healthy kick and I felt so violated that this could happen to my body I took charge and started clean living. Am now 6 months pregnant
I wish I’d known this before, my hormones went absolutely haywire and it was a major player in me having a complete and utter melt down that lasted 3 months and took a very long time to get over.
There’s lots of things I wish I knew before, I’m sure we all feel like that though.
I’ve been off the Pill since about April after being on it for 15 years, and I have been fortunate to not have any major issues. Ok well PMS is a bit worse but my skin has largely been ok (cross fingers). My cycle sucks though as it always falls around a Full Moon gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh but its largely predictable. No regrets from me in stopping it though. I was terrified but was gently encouraged by my Wellness Coach Claire and it all seems to be working out fine! i don’t know, maybe my body hasn’t processed the changes yet, but 6 months to be off it seems like a long enough time for processing?
Where have you been for the last 10 months of my life! Such a great article! I have been off the pill for the last 10 months and my body is still going through the stages. I’ve been to 3 GPs since getting off the pill with all the symptons listed above and none of them have told me anything about what you have mentioned.. the bloating, swelling of the legs.. I thought I was going crazy, I was so emotional, I would snap at the drop of a hat.. My period is worse now than what it was when I got on the pill.. the pain!! And now, when I finally thought it was all over, I have back ance!! Just like the other symptoms I really hope this goes away soon. The GP has given me a script for the acne however I’m reluctant to take it, she said it makes me more sensitive to the sun, why would I want to take that?
It’s good to read these stories and know your not alone. How the GPs don’t warn us before starting the pill on ALL the effects even post-pill is beyond me! I feel like now you are just a number to GPs, they write you a script and then NEXT CUSTOMER PLEASE…..
This has nothing to do with the pill and acne, what i wanted to know about acne and Roacutane would following the natural procedures be advisable to someone who is on Roacutane for acne? Meaning getting off Roacutane completely.
Thank you so, so much for this! I was secretly hoping there’d be a follow up to your last post, Natalie! This is just amazing- I can’t thank you enough!
In term of ways of balancing hormones, is Evening Primrose Oil effective or are there more effective oils out there?
Thanks again my darlings (Natalie and Jess!)! xx
Katie x
Hi there,
I have taken evening primrose oil for about 4 months now to balance my hormones and acne. I can seriously say they have been my holy grail. I have no acne. I get no mood swings. I skip that hormonal headache around my period time. I am loving them. Highly recommend them taking them to çontrol hormonal issues such as acne etc. I have been on road durance and I still had the odd pimple when I was on thè medication. I did to finish the full course as the side effects were awful.
Thanks so much Nada- that’s really helpful. Hope they work for me too!
I have been off the pill for about 6 months, after being on it for 9 years (since I was 15).
After being told that I have both endometriosis and pcos I went to see a new doctor who has written me up a script for yet another pill..but I have been reluctant to go back on it, despite feeling worse off the pill. My skin is going crazy, my hormones are out of control and I have put on 8kgs..
Thanks so much for this article because I knew deep down that I shouldn’t go back on it and this has confirmed that. I just feel bad having to tell my dr when I go back to see her!
Gen – don’t feel bad. Your doctor doesn’t have to live in your body! You on the other hand does xo
Thanks so much for an awesome article. The question of coming off the pill has been circulating my mind for the last few weeks, and I’ll take this as a positive sign to definitely come off it. When is the best time to stop, on the tray? Is it best to stop when you’re taking the placebo’s? I’m clueless, and can’t seem to find a suggestion by googling.
Love & light
Xxx

Thankyou so much for this post, this is an issue that I have been thinking about a lot lately. I went on the pill over eight years ago as it, recommended by a gynaecologist after surgery did not work for my endometriosis and I was in so much pain that I didn’t think I had any other options. She recommended that I skip my period completely which is what I have been doing until everything went haywire and I now get breakthrough bleeding for weeks (currently in my fifth week) this leaves my feeling pretty crappy and exhausted. I also have immune problems and IBS, which has been effected by all of this. My Doctor suggested going on a different pill to help sort all this out and clear up my acne, months in and no difference. On the upside I have been working with a fantastic Osteopath and the plan is eventually to go off the pill but we are focusing on building up my immune system and reducing the inflammation first. In hindsight I wished I never went on the pill its caused more problems and masked the original problems not healed them. Sorry about the rant. Looking forward to reading more articles on this issue.
This article couldn’t have come at a better time. Have only been thinking about stopping the pill the last week, and hesitant to do so largely because of heavy periods and bad skin breakouts on the chin area. I had a baby four years ago and my period returned within a few months, despite breast feeding 24/7 for almost a year. I’m thinking my hormones are out of whack or going crazy which is why I went back on the pill a couple of years ago. I guess there is comfort in knowing there are other girls experiencing exactly the same in their 30s.
Thank you! I’ve been stuck on the pill for acne for ages and wanting to come off it, now I have the information I need to actually do it!
Hi Natalie, great article.
I went off the pill around a year ago, and I have been having issues with acne since, my period on the other hand my period is regular. Originally the pill was prescribed to ‘fix’ my acne. I also have other immune issues for which I am trying to strengthen my immune system. I am currently taking a liver cleanser capsule, vitamin c, iron (years of anemia/only in the my last test my iron levels were back to normal), probiotics and spirulina.
I have not tried zinc yet, but thinking about giving it a go, is there a particular brand you recommend? what about the doses? I have read large quantities can be bad, as zinc accumulates in the body unlike other minerals and vitamins. How long is recommended to take it for?
By the way I am a vegan, and been gluten free for a year too, to reduce inflammation.
Thank you in advance for your reply! Cheers!
Thankyou so much for writing this post. I was on the pill for 6 years and came off it 1 year ago. I came off it because my doctor told me to change to a different pill as I was getting spotting etc. I changed and the new pill made me feel psychologically unstable. I thought I was going crazy. I trusted my intuition and came off it. My psyche felt so much better after I stopped it – I felt back to being just me! I did have really bad acne (which made me so upset because my skin has always been clear). I’ve been focusing on yoga and eating a wholefoods diet lately and I’ve never felt better. All of my friends still think I should be on the pill with the most common rectiong being, “your not on the pill? Your going to be pregnant in a few months!” I wish I had this information a year or 6 years ago but am grateful for it even now and it shows us to treat our bodies with love, kindness and respect.
What are your thoughts about maca root powder? I’ve heard this can be a good way to balance your hormones…
Hi again Natalie,
I forgot to ask something in my last comment. What do you think of going off the pill slowly. A friend of mine said that she was somehow cutting her pill in half and taking half a pill a day and then she wants to go to 1/4 pill a day until she decides to stop. Can slowly reducing the amount you take help? I have never head people go off the pill in this way. I would love your thoughts on this….
Thanks
Lyn
i took the pill for almost six years because of endometriosis and have been off it now for 6 months. it has not exactly been a walk in the park (very heavy bleeding, excruciating back pain, skin problems) and sadly i cannot find a doctor who is willing to help. as i cannot afford a lot of the alternative treatments i am left to my own devices- and lots of the supplements you mention i also cannot get. dou you have any advice or an idea how to proceed? thanks so much, really need the help. best from very faraway berlin, anja
I came off the pill about 1.5 years ago now. I was taking Yasmin for around 5 years.
When I came off, I was fine for the first couple of months. But then my skin started to break out with serious acne. It was all over my back, chest and face. Literally everywhere. I tried so many different methods, and finally got rid of my acne by doing to following:
I took a chinese medicine liver detox pill for 2 months
Cut out all alcohol, dairy, gluten, egg for 2 months
Started to take a zinc supplement for this period
I still get pimples every now and then, but my skin is now looking the best it has in years. To maintain my skin I now do the following
* Take fish oil everyday
* Take a good probiotic everyday
* NEVER eat cows dairy – it always causes pimples.
* Take 4 x super greens tablets every day
* Wash my face with a “clarisonic mia” and a natural cleanser
* Use a natural moisturiser, I use Natio’s Acne range
* Exercise – seriously, even 1 walk a day seems to fix my skin
* Swim in the ocean – If its too cold, then just wash your face in it.
I do all of these everyday and my skin is clear and glowing. Never looked better!
I was on the pill for 5 years, mainly for bad period pain (as in throwing up bad), but also for acne and contraception. I’ve been off it for 3 months and still no period. I’m really scared that when I do get my period the pain is going to be bad again – any advice for this? My acne seems to be flaring up again, especially on my chest and shoulders. I take zinc and salmon oil supplements, but maybe not consistently enough. Will try the supplements mentioned here.
Love your work Natalie!
Thanks for the interesting and ah- so- topical post! I’ve been eating the pill for 7 years, originally started with it in my late teens due to anorexia. The purpose was to get my hormones “working” and make my period come. I actually got my first “period” when I was 17 THANKS to the pill…. Nowadays I feel furious about the fact that nobody told me back then what was actually going on- my body & hormones were not working due to my eating disorder and the purpose of the pill was to trick my body to believe that everything was ok when it actually wasn’t so that I’d get my period, the result being that I’m now 25, perfectly healthy but have NEVER had a period without the pill.. so I have no idea what having a normal hormonal cycle feels like or if I even have any!
Stopped eating the pill just 2 weeks ago, have not noticed any changes yet, how long does it usually take before things start happening?
Finally a positive blog article about coming off the pill…Thank you sooo much!!! Have been getting so upset reading about all the bad experiences people have had with acne, and none offering possible solutions to the problem. Thank you for helping me prepare for coming off the pill!!
Thanks for the info! I am hormonally crazy!! Just been diagnosed with Lupus, 3 kids in 4 and a quarter years…. haven’t had a period in 3 years – hence baby no. 3 was a complete surprise. I am receiving conflicting information all the time – my GP is great she’s also a naturopath as well and has a very keen interest in auto immune issues, my specialist is 70 years old, male and has no idea what I am talking about. Will add your info into my ever improving daily routine to wellness!
I felt compelled to post my experience as I too was fed up reading the negative comments regarding coming off of the pill. None of the blogs I found seemed to offer a solution or a light at the end of the tunnel. I was starting to think that all the problems I was having coming off the pill would never improve. I had been on various pills the last being Yasmin for the last 15 years. I never had acne as a teen but did develop it in my twenties. The pill was my solution and for the best part of those 15 years it worked brilliantly. Then in my early thirties I developed high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I was medicated for this but continued to take the pill. Recently I had a bad allergic reaction to one of my medication and ended up in a&e. I was told to come off all medication as the doctors were not sure which meds caused it. I was terrified of coming off the pill as I knew my skin would be bad. It was! It has been 7 months now and I have been struggling with the acne and weight gain that can only be caused by hormonal imbalance. It has been so depressing, nothing seemed to help…initially. However now after months of perseverance in taking a multi vitamin, 45mg of zinc, zinc cream topically and a herbal supplement agnus castus I am starting to see an improvement! I have been excercising 4 times a week and watching my diet. My blood pressure is now normal, periods are regular if very light still. The skin and weight issues although slow have started to improve. There is now that light at the end of the tunnel! I’m so glad I was forced to come off the pill despite the problems. It is a slow and sometimes painful process but you can come out the other side. I’m not it quite there yet but getting there!
I have been on Dianne 35 for 10 years and stopped 9 months ago due to terrible headaches lasting over 3 days at a time. It controlled my acne well but I made the decision to come off due to reports of blood clots and women’s deaths! I feel so much better. I feel lighter and more energetic. My only issue is painful period and the acne issues as if I am a teenager all over again. Although a lot of my hair fell off it has started to grow back now. My doctors do not offer alternative but wants me to go back on the pill. I will do no such thing. Thanks so much for this information, I will certainly give it a try and report back in 3 months.
i have been on Dianne 35 ( Gynofen 35 in my country ) for 8 years now with just a break out three years ago for four months. the fifth month my acne came back as never before so i freaked out and i got on them right away. the acne started on my twenties and i was diagnosed with PCOS …i was on the pill for a year then stopped it then i got the reccudane which i saw a huuuuge change . when i stopped them after 1 year the acne came back vut not as terrible as before. so anyways as you understand almost for my half twenties i was on any pill would do something good in my skin. Now i am nearly thirties and my body screams ENOUGH! i feel my hair very thin which that is very strange because i always had rich and thick hair, my libido is sooo low , i feel pain during sex , mood swings , infections etc.
i decided after 8 years getting off the pill. it’s been a week now and i dont know if it’s my idea but i already feel relaxed and calm . BUT i am scared to death for my skin what will happen? do you think even if i am 29 the acne can come the same as in my teenage years? will i gain weight? i never gained weight either when i started them nor when i had the break for 5 months.
Please help me i am devastated i can’t think of the acne coming back now …but i can’t get on the pill again . Getting off of it was a decision of a year and a half …wasn’t easy AT ALL
tomorrow i will go to my GC to advise me about what he thinks . Did i do the right thing? should i continue until i want to stay pregnant? why all these things never have answers? we live in 2013 for God sakes!!!! Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank you so much for your forum here it’s been the ONLY forum that i found after 7 days of research that at least has a POSSITIVE way of thinking!
reading so many others i was starting to believe that the pill is the only solution and i don’t have any chances…..but i dont know i feel i want to try….and just want to know if it’s risky getting off of them.
Hi. I came off the BCP after constantly feeling like I need to pee. Since coming off Ive gained 10lbs, period of light and late and acne is on my back and face. I haven’t change my eating or exercise routine. Ive done a Total Body Cleanse, am doing a liver cleanse, take Thyrosence, Estrosence and Adreasence, mulitvitiams and probiotics. Any other advice. Im going crazy!!
