11 Favourite Resources For Practicing Yoga At Home.

GUEST POST BY SUSANA FRIONI.

When it comes to practicing and learning about yoga (especially in the early days of your journey) I highly recommend immersing yourself in a room full of other people while being guided by an awesome yoga teacher.

And by an awesome yoga teacher, I mean the kind of yoga teacher that intuitively knows when you need a little extra encouragement to push your edge some more or when you need a gentle reminder to back off in the moments you start to overdo it. I also mean the kind of yoga teacher who is able to adjust your pose to correct your alignment when you’re really off the mark or simply be able to give you a healing massage to help you relax deeper.

But not all of us are able to practice yoga at our favourite yoga studio and therefore are not able to be guided by an awesome yoga teacher in person. Maybe their timetable offerings don’t suit you. Maybe a yoga pass isn’t possible with your existing budget. Or maybe you live in a remote area where yoga studios don’t even exist.

Either way, this doesn’t mean you have to miss out on getting your yoga on. There are so many valuable resources out there for you to practice at home that I thought I would share with you some of my favourites.

ONLINE YOGA CLASSES

Provided you have access to the internet you’ll be able to access these classes. All you really need is your own yoga mat and a sacred place to practice at home, preferably somewhere where you won’t get interrupted.

1. YogaGlo.com – Free trial for 15 days then $18/mth
You can search for the right yoga class by style, level, teacher and duration which I personally think is really awesome. Also, if you are new to yoga then definitely check out the “Beginner Center”. Here you will find an introductory series to a variety of yoga styles which will prepare you for all of the level one classes. Plus, if you want to dive deeper into the yoga philosophy or just get extra guidance with specific yoga poses, you can do that too at YogaGlo.

2. Yogis Anonymous LIVE – some free preview classes otherwise $15/mth
Live streaming classes with world renowned yoga teachers all in the comfort of your own home. You can choose classes based on teachers, level and duration.

3. YogaVibes.com – Free trial for 15 days then $20/mth or $200/yr.
An online collection of yoga classes featuring awesome yoga teachers and a comprehensive yoga library.

4. MyYogaOnline.com – $9.95/mth or $89.95/yr
Another awesome online collection of yoga classes featuring awesome yoga teachers.

YOUTUBE YOGA CHANNELS

The bonus with YouTube yoga classes is that they are free!

5. Tara Stiles – Free
Tara Stiles is the Founder of Strala Yoga in NYC, the author of Yoga Cures and Slim Calm Sexy Yoga, and is Deepak Chopra’s personal Yoga Teacher. If you ask me, she is one super cool yogini who is deeply rooted in generosity. Simply head to her channel if you’re looking for mini yoga routines that you can do anywhere at anytime.

7. Yoga Journal – Free
Lots of free videos here from yoga routines to breakdowns of yoga poses.

YOGA E-COURSES

8. Marianne Elliott’s 30 Days of Yoga Courses – $100
These courses are brilliant! Once you fill out a questionnaire, Marianne will recommend a practice (or two) for you. Once you choose which practice you want to do, you’ll have access to it in a variety of formats (video, audio + text) so you can download it to whatever device you prefer. On top of that you receive daily guidance from Marianne herself to help you on your 30 Day Yoga journey. Plus you can connect with a community of people who have done the 30 days or are doing the 30 days. And to top it off, Marianne has a variety of 30 Days of Yoga editions such as Beginners 30 Days of Yoga, Yoga for Busy People and 30 Days of Curvy Yoga.

YOGA DVD’S

One of my very good friends loves practicing yoga from a DVD. In fact, there are a group of them who meet weekly at the local town hall and practice yoga together from the DVD. I personally have never bought a yoga DVD but if I did I would start with these…

9. Sean Corn’s DVD collection

10. Kathryn Budig DVD collection

11. Shiva Rea’s DVD collection

If you have any other yoga resources you love to learn from be sure to mention them in the comments below.

I love the book ‘Journey Into Power’ by Baron Baptiste. Back when I was at uni, and yoga classes were beyond my budget, this book really helped me. I like his yogic philosophy and the poses/routines are all very well explained and photographed.
I also like Mandy Ingber’s yoga DVDs. I *may* have started doing her DVDs because I wanted a body like Jennifer Aniston’s (!!), who is a client of Ingber’s, and who has spoken glowingly about how great Ingber’s classes were for shaping her body. The DVD of hers that I have is kind of a yoga-fusion-blend with some more traditional calisthenics thrown in, but I find it really simple, peaceful and grounding, and always feel great after I’ve done it.
That said, my favourite yoga is just me, my mat and a candle in my bedroom…

Hi, I watched your you tube video on doing a coffee enema and I think it sounds great but was wondering why on earth you would need to do them every day or 5 times a day!

shelley Dyett » Hi Shelley, Gerson Therapy has its patients do up to five coffee enemas each day because this is how many it takes to offload toxins from the liver. A cancer patient’s body is highly toxic, and when we go into a full blown detox those toxins are stirred up. The liver has a hard time coping with them all and needs help to eliminate them, otherwise they are just redistributed into the body. This is where coffee enemas come in. It’s only 5 a day for the first few months of Gerson Therapy and then it reduces. However, even though I have completed Gerson Therapy I will continue to do one per day for the rest of my life I think. x

Thank you for this! I agree that the studio experience is unparalleled for that ‘push or back-off’ encouragement by the teacher, especially in the beginning. I travel a lot though..so while I try to find classes wherever I go, sometimes it’s just not possible. I LOVE YogaGlo for hotel room yoga :) The teachers and classes are quite amazing. I haven’t tried YogaVibes yet but one of my teachers is listed on there so now that I know it has a free trial maybe I’ll give it a try!

Great resources, ladies! I got on to YogaGlo during my last pregnancy and I ADORE it! An amazing selection of teacher and styles. I’ve been able to recommit to my daily morning practice through YogaGlo as it’s just impossible to get out to a regular class with two little men in my life! The guided meditations are fab too.

I did Marrianne’s course a while back too – awesome!

I’ll need to check the others out – thanks for sharing.

Vari xx

great list ! I recently purchased a dru yoga dvd and book from druyoga.com.au – my husband and I absolutely love it and would recommend it to anyone. It’s fantastic for anyone that needs healing. Sonia x

This is a fabulous resource, thank you! In fact, I love it so much that I’m going to post to it in my blog. :)

Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for mentioning my courses Susan! Great list, I also use YogaGlo when I’m traveling and need a different voice from the one in my own head :-)

My pleasure beautiful! So grateful for the 30 days of yoga experience :-) ) X

Shilpa’s yoga by Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty is a good resource for those interested in pranayama.

yogadownload.com is another great one – they have free 20 min classes and then you can buy 30, 40, 60 minute classes and you can download the pose guide along with it.

Got tons of different classes to choose from, I love it!

What an excellent selection Susana! Love it.

Marianne’s courses look fabulous, even though I teach too I may have to give one a go. Also, gotta love Sean Corne, what an inspirational teacher. On YouTube Mark Whitwell and Sadie Nardini have some great vids too!

xx

Sadie Nardini is pretty spunky indeed! And absolutely loved Marianne’s courses – discovered her during my early days. I actually did her course before I stepped into a yoga class. X

Jess, some great yoga sites to follow up. Thanks.

I tried to do some coffee enemas but it really burns my bowel, it was just room temp and i followed your u tube clip and used 3 tbls coffee. I googled it and found info on a medical site about a lady had the same sort of problem and the coffee caused ulceration of the bowel?? I can only tolerate a small amount caffine as i have an intolerance to it. Have you heard of this before and is there any way around it?

linda » Hi Linda, I am not too sure what could be causing that. Maybe try doing 1/2 or 1/4 strength coffee enemas and seeing if that helps at all. x

Awesome resource. I live in such a rural place that going in to town for yoga class is a big event. I have definitely been struggling with how to practice comfortably at home. Maybe someday, as a future guest post, you could go over creating an at-home space? I would love that!

Great idea Jenny! Will keep this in mind when it comes to future guests posts here at The Wellness Warrior X

Thanks Girls. Great info. I am going to look into it. Have been wanting to do yoga for so long but can’t get classes to schedule in to my life. I will create a sacred space and nurture myself. I too am going to share this post on my website, InnerSelf Harmony, if that’s ok. Love sharing such great info :)

That very good friend who loves practicing yoga from a DVD wouldn’t happen to be yours truly would it? ;P

Yes, indeed, a small group of us country girls get together in the local hall and bust a move, or hang out in child’s pose in front of a DVD projected on a screen made of fabric and bamboo every Monday night. We love it. Most of the women are mums, so getting some time for themselves is so special, and since I work from home, simply getting to hang out with other women is a real treat.

We always leave feeling refreshed, more agile and connected. I’d highly recommend it :)

Thanks for all the top resources Susana! I’m going to check out those Youtube channels! xxx

Love it love it love it! Thank u soooo much from the bottom of my heart Susana! I love yoga but haven’t been able to get to a class in months due to budget and time restrictions so this is an amazing resoursce you have created! Out of interest, may I ask where your classes are held in Brisbane as I am in the western suburbs. :-)

Thank you! http://www.yogatoday.com is really awesome too! Stunning surroundings and 3 very inspiring teachers. One free class each week, if you want to use their entire database, it’s either $9.99/month or full year for $89.95 ; which I recommend for sure!

Wow…thanks for posting this…ironically I just jumped on the internet to search for online yoga sources, saw your facebook post..and bam now i am here…crazy how sometimes the universe points you to where you need to go…thanks xxx

Yoga is a science that has been practiced for thousands of years. It is consists of Ancient Theories, observations and principles about the mind and body connection which is now being proven by modern medicine.
