The Congruency Secret

GUEST POST BY REBECCA DETTMAN.

A few years ago when The Secret ‘went viral’ (before anyone really knew what ‘going viral’ was) lots of spiritual practitioners got really annoyed and produced lots of blogs, articles and radio shows declaring things like a) We’ve known this all along, how come that Rhonda woman gets to be so famous? and b) The Secret doesn’t work and I’ll tell you why (if you buy my 10 week package and pay $1000, read the fine print etc). Well, forget $1000 – the reason the Law of Attraction put forward in The Secret “didn’t work” and left lots of people with unsatisfied pie-in-the-sky visions is because it forgot to mention a VITAL basic ingredient: pro-activeness. Allow me to explain.

Last week, a friend who had just completed an NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) course came over and changed my life in five minutes flat. (Powerful stuff, that NLP.) Here’s something basic-basic-basic, which you can all take from NLP wisdom, too: the concept of congruency. It’s kind of a funny-sounding word, congruency, but it’s my buzz word of the month: only two weeks ago I heard a speech by a South Australian chiropractor who was also driving home this very same important message.

It’s like this: we all have goals, dreams and hopes for the future. Will you achieve them? Well, that depends on two things: your intention, and your behaviour(s).

Your intention is the future you’re creating in your head. Some people call this ‘manifestation’ or ‘visualisation’ (The Secret! The Secret!!!). It’s important to be really clear about what you’d like – as detailed as possible – so that the universe can help you with your request. In other words, I want to be thin and rich is not as powerful, detailed or specific as I want to lose xxx kilos in a healthy way, I want my business to make profits of $xxxxx per annum and import French luxury products that no one else has within the next 12 months.

But it’s no good to just imagine yourself stick-thin, operating your perfect business. You’ve actually got to get up each morning and undergo the right behaviours – physically, emotionally and spiritually – to bring it about.

This is where congruency comes in: do your behaviours match your intention? If you want to lose weight but haven’t properly committed to any healthy eating regimes and/or exercise programs, then you’re not truly mirroring your intentions. If you want to import unique French products, but you can’t be bothered to undergo Internet research, refuse to save money for flights to Paris, and keep telling yourself ‘This is a big gamble and will probably never work’, it simply ain’t gonna happen! And what do most people do when their dreams don’t come true? Blame other people and events, and refuse to accept personal responsibility for their own self-sabotaging!

It’s so simple. Your life is never going to come into perfect alignment if your intentions and behaviours contradict each other.

Another way of putting this is to talk about living your life with integrity. Do your personal relationships, jobs, finances and general health-and-happiness match your core values? Or are there decisions you’ve made in your life that don’t really resonate with your gut feeing… but you keep allowing them? There’s never been a better time for a spring clean. It takes a little courage, but if there’s people in your life, various commitments or personal habits that are ‘bad’ or ‘wrong’ for you, it’s OK to ditch them. What’s really inside your heart? It’s time to make that congruent with your reality.

Love all of your posts Rebecca!
I truly believe in the law of attraction.
I am finding that when I try to get into the mindset of succeeding their is still that soft voice of telling me i won’t.
I wont give up though x

So true! If all you’re doing is dreaming and not actioning any ideas than no way are you going to have the business or life you want. Thanks for sharing Rebecca!

The law of attraction is so much more than what the “Secret” promoted and your article is spot on, your intentions have to align with your behaviour and you have to get out hussle as well. Creating the life you dream is more than just visualizing but going out and makign it happen! Jack Canfield’s books are great for teaching this. He had so much success by combining the law of attraction with hard work and not giving up!
Great blog post!

Yessss. Finally, someone talking about ALL things required for success. Belief without action is wishful thinking. Action without belief is self-sabotage. Congruent alignment of intention and action = effortless success. I LOVE IT! Thank you for a beautiful reminder.

This is such a wonderful post! Thanks Rebecca xx

Jess, this his awesome! Thanks for featuring Rebecca’s article. It has really ‘hit the spot’ with me! Much gratitude to you both, Lesh x

Wow guys, so much love! Right back atcha! :-)

Thank you Rebecca, just what I needed to hear today. Love & Rainbows

We all need to hear this said in a clear and concise way. Thanks Rebecca

This is wonderful! Just what I needed today. xo

It would be quite easy and comfortable to believe that the universe gives me everything I desire and everything I want.

I don’t.

My trust is sent toward my God, Jesus and The Holy Spirit. But what you’re saying, is so true and makes sense on so many levels. Core values and integrity are the keys to get to that place you want, it could be work, health, money, etc.

But, even though our intentions are important, I believe that so are our intitution, that little voice inside of us, sometimes it’s actually God telling us what to do, sometimes our mind works in wonderful ways. Living life, wow, it’s so much fun!

Have a nice tuesday, everyone!

10 years ago I got what I wished for. Did all the stuff you are suggesting. However, Universe has thrown me a ball: two options were on a table, one with more money and one with less. My gut feeling was telling me to go for less – but I choose more money (unbelievable pay at the time for someone who was just 2 years in a country). I have paid heavy price – I got boss that bullied me to n’th degree, I lost confidence, my spirit was crushed, my family life suffered. I have signed a pact with the devil. Since then things have changed but I am still reeling from the experience. Now I am too scared to wish and go for anything with full heart – and I am not getting anywhere…

Oh Arianna. I really feel for you, I too made a career choice that I thought was right at the time and then ended up being micro-managed, stressed and very unhappy.

Here’s the thing tho, you’ve already mentioned you went against your intuition. So your intuition is strong. You CAN trust yourself to make the right decisions based on your gut instinct.

Secondly, the tyrants in our lives (whilst really unpleasant) can teach us great things about ourselves and the world. You’ve grown and learnt valuable lessons.

At the end of the day, we can regret the choices we made, or we can do a 180 and face the future with hope and joy for wonderful opportunities that always come.

I found these things helpful for changing my attitude

- using kindness: ie not beating myself up for making a choice which was the best one at the time. sure it didn’t work out, but now I’m even more clear about what I do and don’t want
- getting clarity: talking / journalling / meditation all helped me to become still and present and know exactly what I wanted and needed to do to make it happen
- practicing trust: remembering that I’ve had difficult circumstances before and things always turned around and good things came

Hugs to you. You will get through it. :)

Thank you all.

This was a much needed wake up call for me as a start up CEO. Thanks so much!

so you know what you need to do, Arianna!! just do it! ;)

thx again, Jess!

Love this post!

Thanks Rebecca and Jess. We intrinsically know this truth yet all too often make excuse after excuse for the gap between who we are and who we want to be. And what a price we pay………..

Love this post Rebecca!! Great reminder to have always! :) xx

This is so true, yet so misunderstood by so many people who read ‘The Secret’!!

As a random ‘Secret’ related story, one of my friend’s mum put up pictures of him and his ex-girlfriend *all* over the house because she was trying to get them back together Secret-style (nevermind the fact that neither of them wanted to be with each other!) It was like passive-aggressive vision-boarding! And it was kinda hilarious. And an example of not living/believing/acting from a place of integrity or for the highest good of all involved.

Love it! Couldn’t have come at a better time. I feel like I need to make a commitment for my blog, to take it to that next level and I feel, once I do – and work toward it, somehow it will all come together. It is taking that leap – taking away the fear of it all….that is creating such hesitancy :)
