Book Review: Fertilise Yourself by Natalie Kringoudis

As soon as we start having pants-down fun with the opposite sex, getting knocked up becomes a prominent threat. Most girls spend their late teens and early 20s actively trying not to get pregnant, thinking that it will be as simple as becoming complacent with protection or forgetting to take “the pill”. We believe that pregnancy is something that will just happen whenever we are ready. However, the reality is that too many of us are sorely disappointed when we realise that falling pregnant is not always a given.

The further ahead we steam into the future, the more health issues we face, and fertility is front and centre. I can already fill up two hands counting the number of my friends who have experienced some form of fertility drama – and I am only 26! It is for this reason that I believe it’s time we take control of our health, and this will in turn take control of our fertility. It’s time we stopped being so passive with the matter and started taking an empowered stance.

Natural fertility expert Natalie Kringoudis, who is also one of my superstar contributors, has written an e-book that all women need to read. Fertilise Yourself is all about priming your body for fertility, with plenty of tips and tricks for a wellness overhaul, and the ‘how to’ steps to set yourself up to win. If you’re struggling with your fertility, or even just your general health, this e-book can help you navigate your way to fertile fitness.

It’s not just for the women either! Guys, Natalie says that one of the most important aspects of treatment for abnormal and sluggish sperm is lots of regular intercourse. Betcha that sparked your interest.

FERTILISE YOURSELF ALSO INCLUDES:

* A breakdown of what foods make you fertile and why
* Over 25 recipes to help you build your fertile body
* A guide to creating a fertility-friendly pantry
* A fertile shopping list – for you to print and keep
* A foreword written by the lovely Sarah Wilson

Hi Jess,
I love that you are bringing awareness to this issue.

I would love to win a copy of this ebook because fertility is something I regularly worry over.
Although I am only young, I have had struggles with my weight (being to low) and because I have gone without a period for months/ years it worries me that I will never be able to fall pregnant.

This has been a huge factor for my recovery into getting to a healthy weight because some day I would love to be a mother and I hope that I can somehow get my body back on track to be fertile.

I would love to read ‘Fertilise Yourself’ as my husband and I are about to start trying for children and i would like to know any tips to assist my body to naturally fall pregnant. Rather than waiting until something is wrong or ‘not happening’ to ask for help. I think that being proactive about priming your body for fertility is a better way than trying to fix a problem when you don’t fall pregnant easily the first time

I would love to read ‘Fertilise Yourself’ as I have just embarked on the journey of going off the pill and wanting to start a family. I thought at 26 it wouldn’t be that hard, maybe 6 – 12 months for my body to readjust after 9 years of taking the Pill. I was recently diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and have discovered that my chances of falling pregnant naturally are now 50 – 60%. I am trying to avoid a treatment plan of artificial hormones and more drugs and am now looking at all of my natural options to try and help my partner and I conceive naturally and I believe this book will be a perfect addition to my research.

I, totally agree with Tara’s comment. I love holistic approaches to all wellness and am really excited to hear about “Fertilise Yourself”, as my husband and I will likely try to conceive soon. I am 35 and told by Doctors that I’m considered high risk based on my age alone! While this is disconcerting, I know that so much of my health follows from my eating and lifestyle choices. I am looking to be proactive in this next venture also. :)

Hi Jess,

I want to read Fertilise Yourself because I am trying, in fact, to be fertilised! I am 30 years old and my husband and I have been having problems with fertility. I have an autoimmune disorder and am extremely reluctant to go down the path of IVF type treatments, throwing all of those hormones at my already fragile body! I have tried ‘going healthy’ with food and regular acupuncture, to no avail. Also, we have kind of neglected his side of things, he will be very pleased to know more baby making practice is on the cards! Knowledge is power. So reading Natalie’s book will hopefully give me and my hubby a little more power over tackling this challenge.

Thank you for reading,

Lauren.

This book looks amazing! I would love to win a copy (if I’m eligible, living in the U.S. and all). I just got off “the pill” (thanks for the final push with your recent post!) and am terribly worried that all those years will have affected my future fertility. Also I’m 34 and my fella is 28… and not ready for a baby. This means it will most likely be a couple years before I can even start trying and I’ll be well into my mid-30′s by then. Yikes! I am doing everything I can to get in my best baby-making shape now, so when the time comes, hopefully my eggs will have kept their youthful glow and my body will readily accept the task at hand. This book would certainly step my game up. :)

Hi Jess,

I’m so grateful for you continuing to work with Natalie to make this important information public knowledge.

Last year I found myself pregnant for the first time and after 11 weeks endured the traumatic experience of a missed miscarriage. Although a tough time for myself, hubby, our family and friends, it was a truly empowering experience, something that has enabled me to gain greater knowledge of myself as a person, my hubby and I relationship-wise as well as thinking more about ensure we have our financial, health, and overall wellbeing under control and ready to create and nurture new life!

I obviously went through a number of emotions, and still do, which in turn effected my health, my weight and emotions. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to take back control of my body, and focus on getting pregnant again. It hasn’t yet happened and the process is harder than some people think.

But I think what Natalie does is a wonderful job at making this important fertility information easy to read and understand. I hope to win this e-book because it will be another piece in our trying-to-conceive puzzle, helping us to make the right choices, and be in the best possible health and wellness state ready to start again on what is such an amazing journey.

Thanks:)

Hi Jess,

Fertility has been front and centre for me since I was 17, I was diagnosed with Graves Disease and knew that this would bring complications with pregnancy, then earlier this year I was hit with Psoriatic Arthritis, a double whammy of Autoimmune Disease… so any tips and tricks Nat could provide in her ‘Food for Fertility’ book would be greatly appreciated. I have been following your blog since the beginning of this year and have learnt so much already. Thank you.

Ellie. x

I would love to win a copy of Fertilise yourself because i am currently 36 years old and would love to start trying for a child in the upcoming months. I know it is a closing window but i sure want to try since i never had a child before. I need all the information i can get on how to do this naturally since i cannot take any synthetic hormones. Thanks,

Hi Jess

I would love to win a copy of this fabulous E-Book. Simply for the fact My husband and I planning on getting pregnant towards the end of this year. I have struggled with Lady Issues since Puberty hit. Ovarian Cysts, Endometriosis, dysmenorrhea just to name a few. I am sooooo clucky (30 years old) cant afford to wait much longer. Cant wait to be a mum.

I want to increase my fertility to get pregnant.

Hi Jess,

Thank you so much for your daily doses of inspiration and food for thought. This post really got me thinking and to tell you the truth, I have been worrying about this for some time.

It scares me to think about the day I want to fall pregnant and I have constant fears that I will not be able to. Having fallen pregnant twice in the past few years and not being able to keep them due to my personal circumstances at the time and fear of bringing a child up in a world that is not 100% dedicated to them. The only thing I have ever wanted in life is a child and it scares me that I have thrown away my chances to be the best mother in the world. The feelings and emotions that have consumed me over the past few years have been truly challenging, the constant what ifs? I am ver thankful for you sharing this post and bringing awareness to myself and your readers.

I guess thoughts become things. Mixed with a positive way of life and affirmations. My dreams will come true when they are ready :)

Thank you to yourself and Natalie for bringing a little piece of mind…

Hi Jess,

I’d love to win a copy of Food for Fertility because this book will speak to my future clientele. I am currently enrolled in the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. I will begin seeing clients on November2, 2012. My passion is to help couples of childbearing years. Part of it is fertility but the other aspect is that I believe we need to get healthy years before conception in order to have the healthiest child possible. With autism and cancer on the rise it is truly my belief that this generation needs to get healthy in order for future generations to survive. Unexplained fertility issues is just another piece to this puzzle. It’s all connected just like we are all connected.

So, I’d like this book for myself and for my bookshelf so that clients may see it and desire to read it as well.

Thank you Jess! I love your blog and you are a true inspiration to me and  more people than you probably know. (I hope I don’t sound like I’m ‘sucking up’ to win. I just thought I’d take this opportunity to tell you since I don’t post too often and I felt you should know you are appreciated by people across the world!) :-)

Blessings,

Ashley

I would love to have Fertilise Yourself, because I struggled with an eating disorder. I fear that the lack of getting my period for so long has seriously harmed my body and fertility, and I do not believe in taking medication (birth control, etc.) to increase my chances! It messes with the body, and I’m very interested in learning natural ways (as the body is an AMAZING organism that can self-heal when in sync with the environment’s natural food sources) to help. I truly believe in the power of the earth around us and how it nourishes us, so this would be great, exciting information! Thank you so much, Jess, for all of your wonderful articles that not only teach and inspire me but enrich my life! I hope that every woman who responded on here gets this book, because everyone really deserves fertility and the joy it brings.

I am currently 32 weeks pregnant! I learnt the hard way of how dieting and over exercising and putting your body under pressure can take its toll. Last year I started IVF and after 1 miscarriage and 3 rounds, I successfully because pregnant :)

I feel extremely lucky that I have been granted the miracle of carrying and having a baby, and I see it as a reward for changing my attitute towards food and many other aspects of my life.

I would however love to have a 2nd child, and would love to be able to do this naturally.

I am positive this book will continue to lead me down the right path and assist me in my journey :)

What a great give-away! I love ‘The Pagoda Tree’, and Natalie always has interesting ideas. I think it’s really wrong that girls don’t receive proper, informed education on fertility issues at school. It’s all very well and good to be taught about contraception (and even then, Natalie has informed us on this very website that what we are taught about contraceptive tools – such as the pill – is often glaringly incomplete), but I believe fertility education should be taught as a necessary corollary. I want to read Natalie’s book in order to look after my fertility now. I’m 28, and not quite ready for babies yet, but she has taught me that looking after your fertility is not something you should put off until that distant day when you decide you’re ‘ready’. A woman’s fertility is important to her inherent essence as a female, the optimal functioning of her mind and body, and her wellbeing as a whole. I love Natalie’s holistic approach to these issues and would really love to read her book.

I want to read Fertilise Yourself because I have several friends dealing with fertility issues, and I’d love to know more so I could have some ideas to help them.

I would llove a copy of the book for a friend who has recently gone through the trauma of miscarriage apparently caused by endo & PCOD. I want her to gain a greater understanding of her fertility and the natural approaches she can take to help make her next attempt at being a mum a little bit easier for her and her hubby. The notion that we only deal with our fertility once we are married and ready to settle down is an age old misnomor and needs to be dealt with so people recognise the difference they can make now for their future family!

Hi Jess,
I would love to read this as I plan on starting down the pregnancy path in the next year. Over the past 6 months I have lost 23kg and renovated my nutrition and exercise. I would love to ensure I am doing all I can to prepare myself for motherhood and ensure that my wellness creates a great example for my future children.
Thank you.

HI Jess
I would love to win a copy of Fertilise yourself. I’m 35, have always lived an active/healthy lifestyle and only in the last 2 weeks I was told that I would not be able to conceive naturally and that my super fit, super healthy, super husband’s little swimmers are letting us down as well.
From my own google searching, I am trying to look after what is left of my fertility in the hope that through IVF I can fall pregnant. A book like this would help us enormously in our journey, and might just provide the recipe for us to turn our situation around.
Thank you :)

At 29 years old, I’ve already gone through 2 rounds of IVF (1 successful) and hoping to fall pregnant with a second child next year. After going off the pill, the first time round I assumed being young, fit and healthy that falling pregnant would come naturally. Unfortunately, like so many others on this forum it seems, I do have PCOS and so that was a bit of a pipe dream. As we have no more embryos left, I am hoping to avoid having to go through the whole IVF cycle again so I’d love to win this book to learn more about how to help my body become fertile naturally through food and wellness methods.

Perfect timing for this book! I started on my journey towards a plant-based diet about a year ago. Since then I haven’t been able to stop researching information about changing our lives to be more clean. I’ve been learning about how it’s important for us, as well as the planet and future generations. Your blog has played a huge role in helping me make the changes to do right by my body and my environment. I’m 26 and my husband (of five years) and I have come to the point where we feel that the next step together in life is for us to have kids. Thanks to all the awesome info I’ve come across, I’m in the process of tuning up my body for optimal performance. I’ll be coming off the pill which I have been on for almost 11 years and allowing time for my body to detox and get powered up. I’d love to learn how to feed it the best foods to properly nourish and help the detoxification process. It would be awesome to learn how to incorporate fetility-boosting foods into the mix!

Hi Jess,

I would love to win a copy to give to my sis in law who has been trying to get pregnant for 2 years and is starting to feel a bit helpless. I hope this might be a nice read for her, and possibly a great help!

Thanks
x

I would like a copy of the holistic approach that is given to food. I would feed my children in a more correct and that in the future will not have problems peculiar to the present life. (google translate)

I would like to try for baby number 2 naturally as I had IVF for my first.

I would love to win this book because my partner and I have been trying to get pregnant for the past 2 years and have had no luck. I have changed my diet and lifestyle and still no luck. I would love to know what it is that I’m doing wrong and what kinda foods I should be eating.

I would love a copy too.
I turned to healthy living/eating and fertility awereness methods after experiencing miscarriage with my first baby 1.5 years ago. After that have managed to help my body to get in to better shape, and hope to be a mommy one day. I believe in natural procreation and thats why I am learning a lot and adding lots of healthy foods and excercise to our daily habits.

I want to win a copy of the e-book, because I am definitely one of those gals who relied on a pill to NOT get pregnant, and lived in a world where I believed that I would be able to get pregnant as soon as I got off the pill! Then, my friends experienced trouble with fertility, and I realized I could face a similar fate. Although not actively trying to get pregnant, I’ve been off the pill since November 2011. It took SIX MONTHS for my period to return…scary! My husband and I want to get pregnant in about 9-12 months time, so I’m working to optimize my body to get pregnant and bring a healthy baby into the world.

I always like to learn new information. I have always wanted kids and even though I am not at that point in my life, since I don’t have a man, I think still learning about it early on and knowing the information ahead of time will be very beneficial.

Love todays post and the book sounds amazing! I am not trying to get pregnant at the moment but I think reading this book would give me the tools to get and mantaintain a body that is in tip top shape. That way when I am ready for babies fertility will not be an issue :)

As a Health Coach, I want to help woman live healthy lives and be able to achieve pregnancy naturally! Also, with a 21 month old daughter, I’ll be thinking about #2 in the future! Love this entry. Thanks for sharing!

I would love to win the book because, after years of trying to avoid getting pregnant, we are about to embark on the journey of baby-making. I’m almost 36 and he’s almost 38. I get a bit anxious thinking about it because I get so many mixed messages. Yes, you can have a baby at that age. No, it’s too late. I’m trying to just relax and enjoy the process which is how it’s supposed to be, right? Baby-making is supposed to be fun.

This has come at the perfect time. I’m 29 and have always thought that when I decided to get pregnant it would just HAPPEN. But like you, I already know of so many friends who have issues with fertility. We’ve only just started trying and already I’m worried because I naturally thought it would just happen when we did a little bit of mattress-mambo. I mean, people have kids all the time! As I head into my 30′s I want to give my body the best it can so that we can get on this baby-making train :D (In the meantime, I’m still having fun trying :P )

IVE BEEN ON A HUGE HEALTH, NUTRITION, CHEMICAL FREE CHANGE TO MY DIET AND LIFESTYLE AND THIS IS THE PERFECT BOOK TO ADD TO WHAT I KNOW AND KEEP ME FOCUSED.

Hi Jess,

Thank you for reviewing this, it’s a book I would love to read.
I’d love to win a copy of ‘Fertilise Yourself’ because I have Endometriosis.
Diagnosed at 19 I have spent the past 6 years worrying about the future and trying different (expensive) treatments without complete satisfaction.
However I have found recently Ayurveda to be incredibly helpful & it’s giving me hope. The most important lesson it has taught me is the value of what we put in our bodies.
I’m learning to eat to balance my body, but would love to learn more about balancing my hormones & fertility through my food too.

I wish this book was out a few years ago when I had my first child. It took me almost a year to fall pregnant first time round and during that time I became very stressed and anxious. You are told what vitamins to take and what foods to avoid but never really told about what foods help with fertility. I haven’t closed the door yet on extending my family so I’d love to read this book and learn more about baby making foods. I’m sure everyone can benefit from this book in order to inspire healthy eating as we want to be at our optimimal whether we are trying to get pregnant or not.

I would love to win a copy of this book for so many reasons. I found out I had endometriosis when I was 19, I am now 29, and have 4 surgeries to remove the cysts over the last 10 years. I always knew infertility COULD be an issue, I just refuse to accept that as our fate. My husband and I have been trying to conceive for around a year, and we are so ready to bring a lil person into our world. I am a personal trainer and spend my days ensuring everyone else is on the right path, and being their best selves. I think its my turn now for a lil extra nourishment to help us along our way. This book appears to be such a useful tool and I applaud you for writing this on behalf of all women…. thankyou!

Why do you want to read Fertilise Yourself?
- because the awesome sperm will make awesome babies…i want to give them the best start
http://www.cosurvivor.in

I am 35 and haven’t been able to get pregnant in 10 years… Need I say more?

Great Blog! I’d like to win / read Fertilise Yourself as my Partner & I are both mid 30′s & need to reboot our eating habits before we start trying for a baby… we both need all the healthy tips we can find!

Jess,

why is the book 13.95 on your site and on her site is actually 19.95?

thx.

I would love to win this book because…

I have been ‘unexplained ‘ infertility for 15 years( same partner – hes 100% fine). I did IVF when I was 40 as a last ditched attempt and got a baby girl – it has been the most joyus and wonderful experience, worth every second of waiting, she is now 2!.

I’m 43 and have done every drug under the sun to get a sibling for my daughter, and now my body has crashed, resisting drugs and all things unnatural. It is time to heal my fertility, even though I am older, I have regular cycles, eggs and most importantly a chance. I need all the help I can get! Plus I want to show the IVF establishment that they are wrong, women can have babies in their 40′s and have done for centuries!

After struggling with falling pregnant I began researching birth rates over the last 60 years. In 1960 there were 16 babies of every 1000 (live births) in the US were born to mothers 40-45, and 3 for women 45-54!. By 1997 that number had fallen to 7 for women 40-45 and 0.2 for 45-54. Why? Most likely it came down to diet and environmental toxins.

Everything points that to returning to a natural diet, organic, less processed, less transfats, less artificial colours and preseratives.

I’d love to learn more about diet and making the correct choices to give myself every possibility of falling pregnant and having the healthiest child.

Wow. I’ve never seen any figures on it before. It’s amazing how much we’ve given up over the last 50 years for the sake of convenience. All the artificial stuff we’ve fed our bodies and environments has really taken a toll on our chances as a species. If we keep at it the rate of infertility will sky rocket. I for one don’t want to be in that group any more.

My wife and I have battled with fertility. We married later in life and began trying right away. Immediately because of our age we were sent to ICSI, then IVF, then IUI, and….. then we had a moment to stop, breathe and do some research.

Fertility clinics are a MULTI BILLION dollar industry and don’t give a full story because they are owned or subsidized by the pharmaseutical industry – which Big surprise is another MULTI BILLION dollar BUSINESS. If you went to a doctor and he said you need a heart operation and you have a 1% chance of survival – would you do it? No. But emotionally we are so wrapped in wanting a family we go ‘oh, a .02% chance of the IVF working, yeah, let’s do it’. They never tell you that diet and general health would improve those chances, and most likely even without doing fertility treatments. They are not there for you ‘WHOLE’ being, they are a ‘TINY’ compliment to a vast package of fertility.

Although we follow some great news feeds and websites (like accupunture, chinese medicine, http://www.sharkeyshealingcentre.com.au/, herbs and diet). It would be great to have a fabulous read with practical tips and recipes to get going on proper nutrition for promoting fertility and a healthier being.

I’d love to give the book to everyone of my 10 Nieces so they grow up protecting their fertility in an age when it’s being attacked without our even realizing it. (and every new married couple!) Oh what the heck, let’s just get it right and start teaching it in school!!

1 ICSI, 2 IVF, 2 IUI, and 14 miscarriages. Just asking for a little help in getting on the right track and out of the fertility business trap.

Hi Jess, I actually just stumbled upon your website this very morning, as I was attempting my first ever coffee enema! What a fortunate turn of events! After being on the birth control pill for as long as I’ve had a period (severe acne and weird periods got me in the doctor’s office at age 11), last year I decided to go au naturale and stop taking them. Six months later, I was in the doctor’s office, listening to her tell me that the grapefruit sized mass on my ovary could possibly be cancer and the ovary would have to come out ASAP. Long story short, I got a second opinion and found a doctor who did exploratory surgery and discovered that severe endometriosis was basically eating away at my entire reproductive system. The options were to (a) get on a drug that will make me grow a mustache and sound like Barry White (how’s that for birth control?) or (b) get back on the pill and take it every day, continuously, and NEVER have another period – until I decide to try to get pregnant, in which case I have about 4 months to have a go at it until the window is closed. I went with option B, not knowing I had other options, and of course it didn’t work at all.

Which brings me here, after a long and relentless Internet searchfest, the Gerson book and film, the natural health store, Amazon.com for enema bags (thanks, Amazon, for putting the giant “enema bags” label on the front of the package…) etc etc. For the first time, I feel in control of my situation and my life in general, and I can already feel a difference. At the same time, it feels almost Iike some kind of divine intervention that I am making these discoveries and connections RIGHT NOW, as I approach age 30 and actually have a man in my life with whom I’d be really happy to get pregnant. And bam, the day before the winner of this awesome book is chosen, I see this page, having never been here before. Sounds like pretty good odds to me! So please, listen to the Universe and help me get further along on my journey to health and a mini-me in the not-too-distant future!

I’d love to get more into the natural approach.

At 47 we’ve decided to give up the whole IVF/drug hamster wheel we’ve been on for the last 10 years, and natural ‘oh we’re young it will happen any day now’ for the 6 before that .

I’m not ready to give up and the window is closing sooner than I’d like, but I’d like to get back to healthy and give it ago naturally.

Last year I had a massive car accident, I had just broken up with my partner and moved home to Perth from Melbourne but life was great I was a model and worked as a Retail Buyer. In July last year one of my girlfriends drank too much and lost control of her car, I was flung out of the car and skidded 50 metres down the road on my back.

I died on the road and was rushed to hospital where I stayed for 2 and a half months, I lost my ear, broke nearly every bone in my face, my ribs, ripped all the skin on my back off, had a massive hole in my leg and lost sight in my left eye along with a long list of other injuries.

After I got out of hospital I was a bit down about the injuries but still felt happy and lucky to be alive. 1 week out of hospital me and my friend went to Margaret River and a gorgeous surfer boy came up to me for a chat. That was 10 months ago and that surfer boy and I are getting married in 3 months, live in an amazing house by the beach and have 2 gorgeous little jack russels.

I am almost completely healed except of course my ear and scars but when Im dressed and have my hair down you cant even notice. We now live a very healthy lifestlye and I run 2 businesses, Poppys Wedding Planning and Surf Bum Baby.

The only dampener is that because of the trauma my body has been through it will be harder for me to get pregnant and I could use all the advice I can get.

x

I would love to read the book for general hearth and clean eating. I am thinking about bib # 2 and want to give my body the best start and in turn pass on great nutrition to my kids. My sister is also struggling to have a baby and I know she would love this as a gift. My fingers and toes are crossed :-)

First off, please gift a book to Bec. What a story! I teared up.

I would feel so lucky to read this book. Particularly because I have started acupuncture and chinese medicinal herbs in the last 6 months and I believe that Nat’s process would go hand in hand with that.

My husband and I live in Phuket, Thailand. I am 41 years old and found my soulmate late in life. Last year I had a miscarriage.
My doctor advised me to undergo surgery for the 6cm fibroid tumour outside my uterus. After waiting 3 months after surgery to start trying again my Thai doctor (Dr. Tittiporn – seriously!) told me he changed his mind and felt that I should consider adoption. I was crushed! He said it would be too painful for me to go through pregnancy and childbirth due to adhesions from surgery. The last time I checked I haven’t met a woman (my 2 sisters have had 8 children) that went through pregnancy and childbirth and said, “Well now, that felt so good!”

So, Peter and I have turned to a new doctor (Dr. Manup – yep that’s his name) who suggested we visit the Chinese Medicine doctor in the hospital. Dr. Manup tells me that they will work together in helping us to make a baby. I think FERTILISE YOURSELF could really help me on this new path.

My 6yo niece, Lulu keeps asking Anny Wenny (that’s her version of Auntie Wendy) and Uncle Peter when they are going to make her a cousin named Tinkerbell.
