My Clean Beauty Regime
During my internet travels last week, I came across the following infographic that I think all women need to see. Too many of us are complacent with what we put on our skin, because we aren’t aware that absorbing toxins through the skin actually does more damage to the body than if we were to ingest them orally. When we eat or drink something toxic, our liver does its job and tries to filter out some of the undesirable content. However, when applied to our skin, the toxins are absorbed straight into the blood stream and into our cells. This is why chemical-laden cosmetics do so much damage! It doesn’t have to be this way though. Check out the infographic, be alarmed, and then scroll down to read my clean, natural and organic beauty regime.

MY CLEAN REGIME
AM
My first order of beauty business is dry body brushing for five minutes before stepping in the shower. I dry brush to get my lymphatic system moving, but as an added benefit it sloughs off dry skin, and helps to get rid of cellulite.
In the shower I cleanse my face with a tiny amount of Mukti’s gentle foaming cleanser, and wipe off with a bamboo face washer. Every second morning I will wash my hair with Mukti shampoo and conditioner.
Out of the shower, I use a tiny amount of Mukti (can you see a pattern?) balancing facial moisturiser and I’m good to go.
I love Mukti stuff because it’s one of the only beauty brands I’ve found that is totally clean, certified organic, and actually works on my skin. It’s also local to the Sunshine Coast, where I am from.
PM
At night I cleanse my face again with Mukti’s gentle foaming cleanser. Out of the shower, I wipe my face over with 3% hydrogen peroxide to help remove blackheads, and then I moisturise my face with organic coconut oil (mostly around the eyes and forehead).
COLOUR
I don’t wear make-up very often, but if I need to go somewhere that calls for a bit of prettying up I use INIKA mineral powder foundation, bronzer, eyeliner, mascara and eye shadow. I don’t wear anything on my lips besides a bit of Aubrey Organics raspberry lip balm. It’s so yummy, and it’s so clean you could probably eat it.
EXTRAS
About once a week I have a bath with two cups of organic apple cider vinegar added to my bath water. This not only detoxifies the body through the skin, but it also leaves you feeling so silky smooth. And the vinegar smell doesn’t stick around long.
Also about once a week I will apply a natural clay facemask, followed by a Mukti facial scrub.
To lighten my hair, every now and then I will spray it with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Because this can dry it out, I will then put coconut oil through my hair as a deep nourishing mask.
I used to feel naked without perfume, but these days I very rarely wear it. If I do, it’s only a bit of essential oil or some organic Pegasus perfume made from essential oils.
Now that we are coming into the cooler months, I may need to moisturise my skin a bit more, so I will just add coconut oil to my body as well as my face.
We also always have aloe vera in the garden, so if I’m out there I will break off a bit and rub it into any dry spots and my cancer scars.

I have also been using Mukti products for a few weeks now and I am amazed with the results…so much better than any other super-dooper promise making lotions and potions I have tried in the past!
Here is a fabulous website to check out. They do all the work for you and determine the safest products available. You can purchase them directly from them. Keys product line has a great sunscreen and Suki has a great exfoliant that I love.
Is it possible to reverse the damage that the chemical-laden beauty products we have used in the past have done?
Yes, our bodies are incredibly clever. All we need to do is stop putting the toxins in, and do what is needed to assist our bodies in detoxifying – removing any obstacles that will make it more difficult. x
Detox baths – bicarb soda or epsom salts. Eat clean, healthy and as much organic food as you can. Green smoothies. Exercise to sweat it out. Drink lots of water.
not okay on Gerson though – salts of any kind are not permitted.
I tried Mukti a couple of months ago. Loved the results but the smell of the cleanser and moisturiser bothered me a bit. Too sweet perhaps? Reminded me of pink musk sticks.
Maybe it’s just because I’m pregnant?
I’m now trying Antipodes skincare from NZ and I am in LOVE!
My skin has never been so soft and smooth. And I haven’t had a spot come up in weeks. A rare thing for me.
I’m also trying to remember to use a few drops of rosehip oil after cleansing. This could be helping too.
What sort of body brushes are recommended for use? I realise there are different types?
Bodicare make a great range, that Miranda Kerr uses. I have their hair brush and I love it. The body brush is on my wishlist
Great post! My Mum makes her own cosmetics so I have been very fortunate not to use products full of chemicals. I love adorn mineral cosmetics too!
I have been using natural products for many years. Everything we put on our skin goes straight into our bloodstream! I like Miessence (certified organic and Australian), Adorn Mineral Cosmetics and I have also been dabbling with making my own products as well, to keep costs down for the whole family. I currently do an epsom salt bath a couple of times a week to detox – will give the ACV a go too. Thanks again Jess for a great post!
hi jess
i was just wondering if you could tell me where you got your body brush from? i’ve been looking around where i live but haven’t been able to find something that is a reasonable bristle stiffness (they are either too soft or too stiff).
also, if you don’t mind, i was wondering if you can tell me … are you still taking any of the supplements and are you ingesting any fats into your diet now (even nuts etc)? i thought i read in one post that you ate a cheesecake made with cashews.
thanks very much for your time in advance.
leesa
Fabulous post! Would also like to know what kind of body brush you would recommend? Am definitely going to give Mukti a go. xx
Thanks for this Jess, I’m currently on the hunt for kinder cosmetics. I tried a natural brand of shampoo and conditioner but it just made my hair look dull and lifeless! I’m looking at buying 100% Pure’s makeup; it’s natural, organic and vegan but the colours are still bright, fun and not too earthy
xx
Thanks so much for all of this wonderful info!! I love clay – it is fabulous to use for so many purposes because it really works and so quickly! A great info website is http://www.aboutclay.com – click on testimonials and clay info sheets – is fantastic!!
Have just been told about rendering plants and their by-products that go into our cosmetics, hair care products, soaps, wax crayons etc. Have a look and it will shock you!!!
Thanks for all of your research!!
Kaz
Wow this is so interesting Jess, thank you. I used to use only Sukin products but was told that they contain a chemical in it not so good for the body, then found Miessence, amazing products but so expensive to continue to buy. What does the coconut oil do for the skin, i am 35 years old and have a few fine lines, what natural product could i use on my skin for the lines?
Hi Caroline Rose,
Try using certified organic, pure rosehip oil. I am 35 as well and have been using rosehip oil for about 2 years now and I frequently get comments on my skin! You only need to use a small amount so the little bottle goes a long way.
Thank you Rebekah, what brand do you suggest?
I use Trilogy or Springfields. They are both good brands – you should be able to pick-up either from your local health food store.
Does anyone have any ideas for a good natural deodorant that does not have aluminium in it? I have tried a few products but have not found any that I like or that work…
Yes definitively, I use and recommend Neways aluminium free deodorant, and it works.
Happy to help with more info, and for all not toxic skin care and cosmetics.
Not all organic products are safe.
Anna
Thank you Jess for all your good information.
Hi Rebekah, I use Aubrey Organic E Plus High C deodorant – or none at all!! Lemon juice also does the trick as well as plain ol’ coconut oil. x
Hi Rebekah, Mukti has a great deodorant and body spray. It’s certified organic, has no nasty chemicals and it actually works (the essential oils minimise the bacteria that cause the odour). Importantly, it doesn’t stop you perspiring, as this is a natural body process we all need in order to allow toxins to escape. Cheers, Leigh
PS – Thanks Jess from the whole Mukti team for the great post!
Hi Rebekah, I use Bubble and Bee Organics Spearmint and Tea Tree Super Pit Putty. Bubble and Bee makes deodorant in 3 formulations: stick, cream or spray…all of which work very well and a variety or different scents to choose from. All are chemical free and they have a guarantee that says if one scent/type doesn’t work for you, they will replace it until you find one that does. You can find Bubble and Bee Organics online.
Hi..wow…I love all this information! Just wondering if anyone knows how to find a stockist for the Pegasus Perfume? Or is it only available online? Am also researching/considering Neways for the organic alternative to skincare/home products…?? Thanks xx
This is information that so many women (and men) need to be aware of. I have always had an interest in natural cosmetics and products and rarely actually use any products. I dry brush before the shower, I make my own salt scrub with whatever oil is in the cupboard and a few drops of essential oil. My face cleanser is pure, natural honey with a little bit of sea salt for exfoliant. It is softening and an antibacterial. If I feel a break out coming on, i just dab a little bit of honey and leave on the on the spot for a few minutes. Does wonders! After the shower I take a cotton ball and wipe jojoba oil ( I use Essence of Vali product – beautiful line of quality grade essential oils). Clay masks are essential. I also use Jojoba as a oil treatment in my hair – I leave overnight and wash out in the morning. Use food, mother nature – she is so bountiful for our beauty! Great site Jess.
i use apple cider vinegar to clean my teeth (half water/half vinegar and my toothbrush) and it works very well.
also, charlotte gerson points out that when your body is detoxified, you don’t get body odour. i have been on the gerson therapy for a year and i can say for sure that now i don’t get any body odour under my arms. even in the summer. i might sweat, but the sweat doesn’t smell.
Thanks for this post, Jess. I have just started slowly replacing my regular brand items with organic alternatives. I went with Sukin but I can see from a post earlier that this may not be the best brand as they contain chemicals. It’s so hard when products are branded as organic/chemical free when they’re actually not.
Maybe I’ll wait for all of my Sukin products to run out then move on to Mukti.
Do you have any information/advise about Sukin?
Brilliant poster! Thanks for sharing!
Brilliant poster! Thanks for sharing! I’m about to start using Transdermal Glutathione & Vit C…. So, absorbing via the skin instead of the gut!
Thanks for all the tips, Jess. I do use coconut oil and find it amazing. I’ll take on a few more of your suggestions too. Whatever you are doing is working. You look radiant in your photo on your website. xx
Hi Jess, I hate to bring this up but the lip balm you are using is not ok. There is no such thing as ‘natural flavour’. Its a legal loophole. Devastating but true. Cyndi O’meara has some interesting info on the subject if you want to check it out.
Love your work!
Dani
Awesome post on a very important theme!
I’m just wondering if theres anything else (in addition to hydrogen peroxide) I might use for blackheads? It’s possibly the most annoying skin issue I have.
And when it comes to deodorants, I remember a post where you mentioned home made coconut deodorant and I think it was http://lanapurcell.tumblr.com/post/5065222525/why-i-heart-coconut-oil-diy-deodorant
So check that out people!
And if you just google ‘home made coconut deodorant’ heaps of links comes up.
I have still to make one, but thats the aim for upcoming summer
I <3 natural hygiene
Hi Jessica, thanks for sharing this; great poster! I am wondering; my local health food store doesn’t sell the 3% hydrogen peroxide, but the pharmacy does. But it doesn’t say anything about it being organic. Can a lot go wrong with it, do you think it needs to be organic?
Thanks!
Rawpleasure.com.au have clean hydrogen pyroxide clean enough to drink too, I get it in 30% and water it down. Tastes good
Great post. We recently moved and had a water filtration system installed to have purified drinking water. One of the tests they performed was an illustration of how the “junk” in treated water is absorbed into the skin. What an eye opener to me—and had me thinking of the chemicals in shampoo, cosmetics, etc.—-so this is very timely. Thanks.
I LOVE the infographic! Just posted it to Pinterest
Interesting article and responses – I started making my own toiletries this year so I could be sure of what’s in them, and colour cosmetics are going to be next. In the meantime I’m going to try the ground mung bean trick!
Sorry if this is a bit OT but I just wanted to ask Jamie how she posted the infographic to Pinterest.
Good timing Jess – we just started stocking Mutki in the store – http://www.barenaturals.com.au/store ! Inika is next ![]()
Rebekah – I have tried lots of different natural deodorants and the only one that works for me is the Moo Goo deodorant! Its not organic but its as free of nasty chemicals as possible and no aluminum. You can buy it in chemists or online.
Wow, thanks so much for sharing this Jess. That infographic was a real opener too.
Hi Jess,
i’ve been reading your articles for a while, love them! Was wondering what you do for sunscreen though? I like my day cream to have a 30+ SPF in it so I don’t have to fiddle around with multiple products….
tks
Amanda » Hi Amanda, thank you! I don’t wear sunscreen at all. I prefer to allow my body to absorb vitamin D, which it doesn’t when sunscreen is applied. If I am out in the sun for long periods of time, I use organic coconut oil. There are some good natural sunscreens like Wotnot and Soleo as well. x
Thanks Jess, i’ve found a moisturiser by Antipodes that has natural spf in it so I’ll try that when I run out of my current non-natural face cream! x
Hi Jess, I’m 16 weeks pregnant and was wondering if its ok to use the hydrogen peroxide as a toner AND a mouthwash while pregnant? If you can help, thanks Emma
Emma » Hi Emma, yes I am pretty certain that you can. xx
Hi Jess,
Firstly I would like to say WOW! what an amazing and inspirationla empire you have created. Finally someone who speaks my language
I am loving everything you are producing – dont stop doing what your doing!
I have a question in regards to pigmentation?
I currently have hyper-pigmenatation spots under my eyes on the cheek bones and my top lip.
I have tried numerous amounts of lazer treatments and chemical peels, none of which have made it go away. Having pigmentation on your face can be quit dawnting at times as that it the first thing people look at.
Please help me or give me some tips.
Peace and Love

I have been using Ynatural for the past five years and would not put any thing else on my face body and hair i,m a hair and beauty expert , the product is as natural , no chemicals, fantastic
Jess, We use mung powder as our body wash and face wash as well. We grind dry mung beans into a fine powder and put it through a sieve to get finer powder. It makes a perfect body scrub just mixed with water.
In Indian culture this is used as a body wash for newborn babies instead of the chemical products. I still use it for my 3 yr old daughter and myself in place of soap. For the face, i also use little milk and wipe it with cotton on the face, I know that dairy is not allowed in Gerson. Mung powder makes the best whole body wash including face.
We found your website while researching for alternate options for my mom in law’s ovarian cancer. Great site, http://www.chrisbeatcancer.com was another we found, quite inspirational, both of you. She is going to gerson clinic in June.
Hi Jess,
Thank you do much for the work you do. I got introduced to your blog, book and website 2 weeks ago and I haven’t stopped reading your material since. Not only do you offer amazing tips and philosophies about living clean and natural, but you also recommend some really fantastic authors and believers in natural health.
All the information works like water to a plant. I absorb it and I really feels like it’s nurturing me both mentally and emotionally, but also by eating green, changes me physically.
I love the path i’m on and I feel like with your community, I found peace.
And for this I would like to say thank you.
Also, I have a question following Lauren’s, question about pigmentation.
Is there a natural remedy I can use to lessen the sum damaged pigmentation in my face?
Thank you again.
Sandra

Hi Jess! I have been using bioelements all things pure face scrub and I love it. It says it’s organic and pure. Have you heard anything bad about them using bad chemicals or toxins?? Here’s the link to the website if you want to check it out. http://pure.bioelements.com/
Hi Jess
I have been using organic care shampoo and conditione can you please advise if this product is good?
Jasmin » Hi Jasmin, Organic Care is a bit of a green-washing culprit. It’s not organic, and it contains ingredients that are not natural. Have a look at the ingredients and type any that you aren’t sure of into the Skin Deep database: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ xx
Hi Jess,
I am still yet to have recieved any feedback from you in regards to my post on 10 May 2012.

Lauren » Hi Lauren, Symptoms like this usually mean that something is going on inside though – and anything you apply externally will only mask it anyway. I would suggest seeing a naturopath or integrative doctor to see where the imbalance is and then acting in accordance to that. Good luck! x
Can you buy Mukti’s anywhere in the US? I live in Minnesota and would love to not pay a ton for shipping? If not, any brands you suggest for us in the states?
Hi Jess!
I’ve been browsing Mukti’s and Inika’s websites and I’m very thankful you mentionned them. Great options! I’m slowly changing all my make-up/ beauty products and will surely include these brands in my new basics. *I used to buy Burt’s Bees but I’ve come to the conclusion (with EWG) that although they are better than “conventionnal”, some of their products just aren’t optimal.
Question is: What colour foundation do you get from Inika’s range?! Just so I can get an idea of where I stand in there!
Any favorites/ must haves regarding eye/ cheek colours?!
**For those of you in the U.S and Canada, try looking up Dr. Bronner’s -eucalyptus and unscented- and Tate’s Natural Miracle -almond, yummm!-. Love their products!
Love, happiness and lots of healing to you and yours, Jess!
Vicky x
Vicky » Hi Vicky, I use the patience colour I think for my foundation. And then I just use the bronzer on my cheeks. I don’t wear eyeshadow much but the pink/peach/bronze colours are my favourites. x
Awesome! Thanks!
Hey jess… Your blog is so informative, thx for sharing your knowledge & making a positive impact on ppl lives ![]()
I found your journey into Natural wellness inspiring and am looking to further educate myself in the intriguing world Natural Health.
Do you have any advice on how you went about learning / studying Natural Health alternatives? I’m currently working in Corp world and looking to pursue study as a Naturopath.
Ta! x
Are there any natural hair dyes?
Liz » Hi Liz, not that I know it. There are plenty that claim to be natural, but they still contain chemicals. x
Do you use any facial toner, or just moisturizer?
Kelly » Sometimes, but not everyday. x
Great post! I’m currently making the switch to organic skincare and have purchased sukin for now. One post states that this brand is not so good? What would be the most affordable organic skincare as I make the transition? You cant put a price on your health but hoping there are some affordable rages out there? Thanks!
Coconut oil + sugar = the best bodyscrub.
Milk + nutmeg = the best facial scrub for blackheads.
Raw natural honey = a great facial cleanser.
Eating organic liquorice (containing liquorice root) = great for avoiding upcoming cold-sores.
Organic coldpressed Coconut Oil = rub often on lips when cold sore tingle occur to prevent cold sore from appearing.
Cornstarch = great dry shampoo.
Organic raspberry Oil = great for reducing pimples and skin inflammation.
Calendula Oil = also great for reducing pimples, antiseptic.
Tea Tree Oil = also reduces skin inflammation, use sparingly.
Organic Green tea = brew strong tea, cool, pour into ice cube tray and freeze; rub icecubes on puffy eyes.
Raw organic honey = reduces hay fever: take small amounts internally daily leading up to hay fever season; to build up body’s immunity to pollen.
Hi, can you suggest any hair styling products for men?
Thanks!
Cold pressed virgin coconut-oil is a great styling product for men! Use sparingly, rub over hands/fingers and gently pull through hair, hair can then be styled as desired and is greatly conditioned at the same time! (Coconut oil will give a slightly oily/wet look.)
