10 Action Steps To A Highly Inspired Life

I’ve come to learn over my life that taking action steps, literally putting one foot in front of the other, as we walk towards the life we’d love to have, are worth 80-90% of the whole journey. When I used to work as a chiropractor, using kinesiology, I used to tell my patients that I only did 10-20% of the work during the session. The rest was up to them. If they chose not to take the steps, that their bodies were trying to indicate to them, it would take them longer to achieve what they truly desired in life.
What I found quite interesting about these action steps was the reasons why we often choose not to take them. Why we hold ourselves back and avoid the journey we’d love to take. What I uncovered was quite a revelation to me. The perceptions we have or the choices we make significantly influence how we take some of the most important steps that could help us fulfill our heart’s true desires. Our fears and guilts, judgments and embarrassments lead to lots of stories about untruths and too much hiding away of what’s real.
It is incredible what the human mind is capable of doing and how easily it can influence the decisions we make. We have an uncanny ability to turn molehills into mountains and also turn joy into sorrow. What I mean by that is simple. We turn minor details in our lives into stories of drama and over exaggeration. We minimize and reduce very important and significant details, which mean something to us, to almost nothing. Our inability to take action steps in our lives is based on this principle. They are the two components that prevent us from living our lives fully. What’s strange, though, is that we actually take these action steps all the time. Most of the time we’re not even consciously aware of it and so, therefore, don’t acknowledge it.
It is so easy for us to fall back on a story about why we can’t do something like, ‘I’m not good enough’ or ‘It’s too hard’ or ‘They won’t like me’. All of these, plus more, are the stories we convince ourselves of that stop us from having what we want. Sometimes we’ll even use our traumas as an excuse or the labels we’ve been given as we were growing up like, ‘I have ADD’ or ‘I have anxiety’ or ‘I’m not smart enough’. It’s in our nature to have fear and judgment around owning ourselves. We live in a world that focuses more on duality and separation than unity and balance. As a consequence we are fed lots of projections, beliefs and values that aren’t our own and lose sight of who we are. When it comes time to focusing on what we want, we can’t even open our mouths to say, ‘I don’t want to’. We blow that simple action out of proportion, create a highly creative story around it and believe that it’s because we’re not good enough. In doing so, we minimize who we truly are, in order to preserve the world around us.
So I wondered, what are some of these action steps we could be taking, if we could dissolve some of those judgments, fears, shames or guilts? How would they help us get what we want in life? After observing my life, my clients and very successful people, I came up with 10 steps that were common amongst all of us, that could break through these stories and injections. We’ve all thought about them, in one form or another, but most of us haven’t acted on them. They are as follows:
1. Giving yourself time to work out what’s truly important to you – something most of us don’t take the time out to do and wonder, later on in life, why we did that.
2. Expressing yourself to the world around you by not hiding or running away. Most of us do one or the other and we do so mostly because of our perceptions. As a consequence we repress ourselves instead of expressing ourselves.
3. Revealing yourself to the world so people can see who you truly are – we often want to be someone other than ourselves and fear the reactions we’d receive if people really saw us.
4. Standing up for yourself, despite the opposition you will face – a lot of us are afraid to do this because we perceive there is so much challenge associated with doing so.
5. Give yourself permission to follow your heart and pursue your dreams – how many of you have pushed aside your dreams and what’s in your heart for the world around you?
6. Learn to say no without feeling guilty – a challenge we all have to face. It can be tough not saying yes to others when we can’t see how they might benefit.
7. Learn to say yes to yourself, possibly for the first time – one of the scariest steps to take, particularly if you’ve never really done it before. This is really about self-ownership.
8. It’s ok to upset your parents and people of authority, in order to follow your dreams – this one is controversial because we have been taught to respect and honour our elders. What if that means dishonouring ourselves?
9. Compare yourself to no one other than yourself. Everybody is different and that’s ok – how often have you seen what other people have and wished you had that too? What if you had it, exactly the same way, and it made you miserable? Would you still want it?
10. If you have a great idea that inspires you, go and share it. The world is waiting for you – we all have a wonderful story to tell. Hiding it, disguising it and not appreciating it can certainly make us feel sick.
Take a look at some of these and think to yourself, for a moment, if you have any fear, judgment, shame or guilt associated with doing any of them. I would suspect you might, as do most of us, when we’re not in our own power. Then, ask yourself why you feel that way? Did you start telling yourself a story or did you reveal the small little reason you’re holding yourself back? The conscious mind is responsible for this, but the more you look inside your heart for the answer, you will surpass the conscious mind and see what’s real.
