What Sickness Means and Why It’s Important to Understand it

The human body is one of the most, if not the most, incredible and highly orchestrated system known to mankind. It is made of up several general organ systems, tissues, bones, vascular pathways, hormonal pathways and so many other processes and mechanisms that allow it to function. I often find myself in awe of what my body is capable of doing.

In combination with all these intricate systems that define the human body, we also have a central processing system that controls and manages every other function. This is our nervous system, which comprises the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system. This super highway of neural networks makes sure everything works smoothly and efficiently. The brain itself is made up of three distinct parts and is sometimes called the triune brain. We have the brainstem or reptilian brain, which controls all automatic function in the body, our fight/flight response and our unconscious brain. We also have the mammalian brain or limbic brain, which controls both short and long term memory, perceptions of reality, handles emotions, regulates hormones, controls our subconscious and more. Last but not least, we have the neocortex or that squiggly looking thing we’ve seen in pictures, movies and reference books. This part of the brain controls logic, critical thinking, creativity, handles things like politics and it is our conscious brain – the one that has some awareness of our waking state.

All these parts of the brain are involved in how, why and when we have illness or dis-ease in our bodies. It is important to know, that despite popular and mass belief, the human body is a self regulating and highly oiled machine.
Apart from us feeding it with good nutrition and eliminating waste from it, it literally runs itself. You could switch off your conscious brain completely and your body would still function. You’d be unconscious and still sensing reality but have no way of interpreting it. You could even then switch off your subconscious or limbic brain and still manage to survive. You’d be completely unconscious in this state but your brain stem and spinal cord would still keep you alive.

When we get sick, have an illness or a dis-ease in the body, this is the unconscious and subconscious central processing system of the brain sending alert signals and warning signs to the conscious brain, telling it that something needs to be assessed and dealt with. In other words, illness and sickness are unconscious feedback mechanisms designed to get us to pay attention to something that’s going on inside of us, around us and in our subconscious mind, that we are consciously unaware of. Pretty amazing stuff!

We never get sick without having a deeper subconscious and unconscious reason, intention or motive. Remember, the body is designed to self-regulate and manage itself so it uses this feedback to help you figure out which way to go. Sickness, illness and dis-ease are like your personal GPS and navigation system for life. Without it, we wouldn’t realise that we took a ‘wrong’ turn or made a decision against our own values or require something that we’re depriving ourselves of or need to speed up when we’re going to slow in the process of journeying towards our destination in life.

Conventional medicine, despite all its uses, tools and amazing ability to help humanity, wants to and often chooses to remove the feedback or GPS that’s warning us of the various different things that we need to pay more attention to or look at in our lives. The problem with this solution is that it takes away personal responsibility and accountability. Getting sick or have the flu doesn’t mean you automatically need to take a pill or some drug to ease the pain or discomfort. It’s important for us to take the time to let the body give us what we need; like having rest, time, more energy, self reflection, self analysis or sometimes even attention, affection and nurturing from others. If we unconsciously perceive that we are lacking certain things in our lives, we will create illness sometimes to get it. This is usually because we have a subconscious belief, deep in our mind, that’s telling us we can’t get it through our own values. Too many people will be hurt if we do. They’ll be disappointed, they’ll challenge or disagree with us.

The human body cannot be without illness, sickness or dis-ease.
It is a necessity when we’re off track and not on purpose. Ignoring the signs and signals our body provides for us as well as medicating ourselves, more often than not will stop us from learning how to succeed in life and how to truly live. Look for how your sickness, illness or dis-ease is serving you, adding to your life or even helping you connect more to your values. What are you getting out of it? If you really took the time to look, you wouldn’t want to ignore it so quickly. You most probably would choose to embrace it and learn from it.

Do you try and listen to what your body is telling you when you get sick? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic in the comments below!

Dr. Greg:

This is a wonderful message to share! I have been making my way through Andreas Moritz’s “It’s Time to Come Alive” and he has a similar outlook. I find it difficult to reprogram my beliefs (because I am waiting for the physical evidence of healing to validate these new beliefs :) ). Is this completely ridiculous?

Much health and healing to you (and to Jess, of course),

Evergreen

Hi Evergreen,

Thank you for your comment. Andreas Moritz’s material is great. I’ve read a number of his books and agree with a lot of this insights.

It is challenging to consciously rewire belief patterns. The conscious part of our brain only controls about 2-4% of our actions and intentions. The subconscious and unconscious control 96-98% of what we truly experience. We spend most of our lives trying to override ingrained, hardwired belief patterns. Those are very difficult to break by just trying to consciously discipline ourselves. In order for beliefs and physiology to change, new pathways need to be laid down inside the brain. The brain cannot lay down a new pathway without seeing enough reason to do so and it cannot break an old pathway without seeing a reason to do so.

Changing beliefs and impacting the body takes work but there are many ways to do this. I have developed a specific method to help in those areas. There are so many out there and I have experienced many of them but I wanted to find a deeper solution. Our symptoms are present to help reveal hidden truths. In some way, they serve us. Our brains don’t see how releasing the symptom or illness has far more benefits to us so we hold onto it. It is our only vehicle to get what we want, even though we consciously don’t choose to be sick, in dis-ease or unwell.

Like I said before, the body will only heal when your mind sees enough of a reason to let the dis-ease go and allow you to have what you desire. Until the mind can let go of stories, symptoms prevail. We still get our shadow values met but we feel terrible in the process.

I hope that answers your question.

Hi Greg, I love this post.
I am currently going through a difficult time with my body. I am in the process of releasing old trauma (physical and emotional) that has surfaced, and I’ve been carrying around for 20 years.
My body has got me through a lot of stuff and I have recently gone through significant healing.

The trauma part… I don’t know how to describe it. It’s that reptilian part of the brain that believes my body is under attack when in fact it’s not. It’s terrifying. It has been a process that I’m definitely learning from but not one that I’m enjoying. It’s like living trapped in my body. I know that I am safe but my body doesn’t and it’s the feeling of this that is unbearable.

I have been doing a lot of TRE exercises.

Do you have any advice on how to release emotional and physical trauma from the body?
Thank you.

Hi Sara,

I have lots of great advice and a fantastic technique that can help you release these trauma’s. There are two things to know about current trauma. These two things are really two components that keep trauma around, create new trauma that sticks and more.

Human beings have a knack of taking very small things, that appear threatening or dangerous, and turn them into giants or something incredibly massive. In other words, we make mountains out mole hills. When we have trauma, part of the reason we have it is because of something really small that happened once, that we have blown out of proportion and the conscious brain has created a highly detailed story about it.

Another reason why we stay stuck in the trauma is because we tend to dissociate what we truly want for something else. In others we minimise the big stuff that’s really important to us and blow out of proportion, the small stuff that means nothing at the end of the day. Both these components need to be dealt with in order for healing to occur in the body or the mind.

I would love to assist you work through whatever is holding you back at the moment and I’m sure we can create some forward momentum.

Thanks so much Greg for your reply. I think I will email you privately.

Thanks for another great post Greg!

Hi Greg,
Great insight. Love your explanations and the % breakdowns of our brains conscious/unconscious ability.
I will be making a private appointment with you upon my return from annual leave.
Cheers, RBJ

Thanks R B Jacobs.

I look forward to working with you on your return.

Safe travels.

WOW. LIKE WOW. !!!
So timely for me, I’ve just come home form work (which is entirely unfulfilling) with what feels like a golf ball in my throat. All night I’ve been thinking ‘…but I never get sick’. This is definitely my body’s way of telling my soul to jump back on the path. Thanks for this post mate!

You’re welcome Tara. Glad you are able to recognise and link what your body is telling you to what’s happening in your life. The more you pay attention to these ‘feedback’ mechanisms, the faster you’ll get on purpose with where your soul or inner being wants you to go.

Wow- fantastic! Thanks so much Greg for such a thought-provoking post. I’ve just finished reading Louise Hay’s ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ and truly believe that subconscious thoughts affect our health and wellbeing. I’ve had some recent bouts of ill health, which has made me rethink certain aspects of my life and I feel instantly better knowing that I’m now on the right path with these.

Do you have any other books that you could recommend on the subject? Thanks so much!

You’re welcome Katie. Louise Hay’s book is fantastic. I often refer to her guide on symptoms to help me from time to time when I go through challenges.

I would recommend reading a book by Andreas Moritz, call the Veil of Duality. Really interesting take on how we perceive the world around us.

I would also recommend a book by Dr John Demartini, called The Breakthrough Experience or Inspired Destiny. They are fantastic reads. You may be required to do some work through the book. If you’re willing to do so, you may achieve some wonderful results just by doing that.

If you’d like to know more or you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me directly.

Thank you so, so much, Greg, for some fantastic recommendations. I’m absolutely fascinated by the topic and am really interested in taking my interest further. These books sound just perfect!

Once again, thank you for such a great post and for the recommendations. I’m so exciting to start reading!

Katie

Katie & Greg, you must read ‘Dying to be me’ by Anita Moorjani. It’s her personal account of her near death experience (NDE) after almost dying of Leukemia. She chose to come back to her body, after her experience – which was total consciousness, unconditional love and clarity. She knew she would be healed and came back with one message – love yourself and live a life without fear. It’s really inspiring and soooo spot on.

Hi Tamera! Thanks so much for the recommendation! A couple of people have been talking about Anita’s book recently, so I’ve just ordered it. Sounds absolutely mind-blowing! Thanks again! xx

Love it!
So so true. Too many people have lost contact with their natural self – if there ever was a contact that is, they might have lost it while in the womb or while relying on their mothers milk.

When I lived in Australia (4 yrs; one year backpacking & 3 yrs taking my bachelor in biology) pretty much all my friends were ‘drug-dependent’ and took whatever pharmaceutical available for every ache/discomfort/disease/sickness that came over them. It was so odd, this was not how I was raised at all and only drug I relied on was Ibuprofen for cramps.. ‘Pain is temporary’ and we need to be aware when the body is trying to tell us something valuable and be able to learn from the experience!

Great post – Cheers! :]

Brilliant article and so true! Conventional medicine doesn’t see the ‘healing nature of cisis’ and the body/mind relationship and abilities to heal it self that a holistic approach can tap into. The body has an amazing inner wisdom, ability to cope, communicate, heal or suffer. Once one becomes conscious of this there is a huge responsibility that comes but the rewards are truly endless. :-)
