How do you get smooth, healthy skin? It is something which many find hard to achieve but I am going to show a few methods in Ayurvedic medicine which could help you get the complexion that your desire. Ayurveda is an ancient form of Indian medicine which is still widely used in the country today and is based on some very basic principles of getting your body in balance with nature. Bad skin occurs because of an imbalance and some of the worst blemishes, which can blight our skin such as acne, rashes and hives occur when our body gets overheated.

When our body gets overwhelmed with certain toxins the heat can be trapped and absorbed into the bloodstream which can then lead to these being removed by the body through the skin, leaving rashes and different types of skin irritation.

In Ayurveda, there are 3 main solutions which I will talk about in this blog and which I believe may help you to get better looking skin. They are all based on the notion that you have to cool the body down so toxins are not percolated through the skin rather than through the GI tract. I think these are good tips that can really make a difference if you implement most of them.

1| Lifestyle:
This first tip is an obvious one I think and although it isn’t directly a remedy as such, you need to at least consider it in combination with the next two tips I talk about below. Increased stress levels have been proven to cause skin irritations. In Ayurveda, utilising pitta massage oils such as coconut or sunflower oils to cool the skin, doing regular yoga exercises and calming your emotions are all essential as part of the process.

2| Food:
I would say that avoiding hot, spicy foods is definitely something that you should try, as well as removing as much caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes as you can. I know it maybe hard to give some of these things up but one of the philosophies of Ayurveda is to understand which foods are good for digestion and are absorbed into the body quickly. The quicker the absorption, the less likely you will collect excess heat in your body. Focus on drinking lots of water and focus on eating vegetables and fruit.

3| Ayurvedic remedies:
The third tip is to utilize many of the herbs which have been used in Ayurvedic medicine for millenia. Five herbs that are used for purifying the blood in Ayurveda are called manjista root, neem leaf, turmeric root, guduchi and burdock root. They are meant to help remove excess heat and help in the detoxification process within the blood. There is certainly no harm in trying them and see if they work or not.

Although this is by no means an exhaustive list of the many tips out there for getting smoother, healthier looking skin, if they are all used in combination, they can really help with ensuring that you find some great secrets to keeping your skin beautiful.

Hi David,
I have really reduced my meat consumption and have stopped using all other animal produce and my skin is terrible. It is only isolated to the corners of my mouth though and am wondering if this is just part of a detoxification process? Granted, I am not juicing, so just curious to know how long this great skin I hear a lot of people talk about will take to achieve?

I have read that skin problems (maybe cracking, chapped skin) at the corners of the mouth signify a vitamin B deficiency. Do you know about this, David?

I don’t eat meat, drink or smoke. And my skin pores ( esp around my chin and nose are blocked ) and I don’t have that “glow”. I juice once per day and think I eat pretty healthily too. I have the odd break out but would love to obtain that glow on my face and have clearer skin.

Hi Tiffany,
That is what I want as would like to achieve. Lately, I’ve had to wear make up to hide my break outs. Why do the guests not reply to answer our queries?

Hi Tiffany;

For myself I found it was dairy…when I cut all dairy out years ago my skin issues reduced almost completely. Ashley Pitman just wrote an article touching on this, you might want to check it out here….http://blog.yogatoday.com/2012/04/24/ashley-pitmans-dairy-free-diet-for-glowing-skin-hair-health/

good luck, amber

I don’t have dairy either. But thanks for your reply.

Thanks so much for this article. Can you tell me where I can get the herbs, (I’m in Queensland) how do I take them, are they to be used as a tea?
Thank you!

Awesome I am a massive fan of Ayurvedic medicine. A question where can I buy those herbs from and how do you take them? Simply in tea?? Thank you for this advice xx

Hi Nadine;
There are many online places to find the spices/herbs but two good sources I’ve found are Banyan Botanicals and Life Spa perhaps you could start there.

Excellent! THank you so much Amber! xx

beauty skin comes from inside and that’s why healing our body with food is primary focus. And don’t forget to drink lots of water.

Ayurveda is very ancient and its result are amazing too if you have these herbs with excellent qualities to improve your skin…

Hi David-
Great information, thank you.

Just a quick note. I think its important to know what constitution you are, Kapha, Pitta or Vata and also know what seasons which are more dominite. For instance right now is Kapha season. I personally am Vata/Pitta and (have seen a Ayurvedic Dr) and need to nurture my Vata side in the cooler months. For example with the coconut oil, for someone like me I would not use it during the Autumn/Winter months as it cools the body, I would use something like Almond Oil.

Our lifestyle is one of the component to improve our skin. However, we just take it for granted because of the pressure from work and study. We should consider this simple tip to prevent skin irritations while using ayurvedic products.

This 3 steps has summed the needed ways to get a healthy and beautiful skin. I would also point out that the food we take has a key factor regarding the skin’s health. We should monitor what we it. They say that too much of it and less/deficient is bad for our health. Moderation is a must to have a happy lifestyle.

The main theme is more you care your skin, more it is good and beautiful. Ayurveda , as it has no side effect , so you can always try on it.

For healthy skin, people always drink plenty of water and it is recommended to drink atleast 10 glasses of water. Along with that eat healthy and balanced diet.
