Bringing us closer: 20 little known things about me

When I write my blog posts, I often forget that I am writing for a wider audience than the people who already know me personally. I write as if I’m talking to my friends, because I am. However, I met up with my power posse a few weeks back (awesome girls I hang out with to talk about blogging, business, and our shamelessly big dreams) and they told me that they think my blog is lacking part of my personality. They said my readers are missing out on getting to know me properly. They suggested I write this post.

So, for those of you who I am yet to have an in-person cup of tea with, here are some facts that make up who I am.

1// I am afraid of birds. And Dreamworld.

2// When I was younger, I read so many Sweet Valley High books that one morning I woke up and thought my name was Jessica Wakefield (one of the book’s main characters).

3// I have had the same group of best friends since I was 13.

4// I trekked through the Himalayas in 2009. 10 days of climbing gruelling steps and rocky mountainside, eating nothing but fried rice, and wearing the same pair of pants. It was the best experience ever.

5// I think Russell Brand is the funniest person in the world. Will Ferrell is a very close second.

6// I know way too much about the lives of celebrities.

7// My iPod is full of real old-school music. I’m talking Bob Sega, John Mellencamp, Creedence Clearwater, Elton John, Dolly Parton, Roxette, Al Green, Van Morrison, Bon Jovi, Fleetwood Mac … The first CD I ever owned was The Seekers. Some might have thought this was an odd choice for a seven-year-old. I loved it though.

8// I think the SodaStream ads are hilarious. I piss myself laughing every time they’re on telly.

9// I couldn’t cook until I was 23.

10// I like Grease 2 better than Grease 1.

11// I love wine. I haven’t had even a sip of alcohol in just over two years, and I’d almost given up on the idea of enjoying it in the future until I came across a brand of organic wine called Organic One. I called up the winemaker the other day to quiz him about his completely chemical-free wine. Stay tuned for more info on that!

12// I love reading seedy and sordid tell-all autobiographies from old-school rock groups and icons. My favourites so far are The Dirt by Motley Cru, Scar Tissue by Anthony Keidis and Faithfull by Marianne Faithfull.

13// I need a lot of alone time. I think this is why I love doing coffee enemas so much.

14// I am a Cancerian. And tick pretty much every box that describes this star sign.

15// I love unicorns.

16// I have a girl crush on Nicole Richie.

17// I love watching trashy realty TV like The Rachel Zoe Project, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, The Hills and The City.

18// Karaoke is one of my favourite things to do. Well, it was when I used to drink. This has not been tested since pledging my sobriety. I used to do a killer rendition of Proud Mary. Unless they were equally inebriated, I don’t think the audience felt the same way.

19// My favourite food is curry. Thai curry, Indian curry … it doesn’t matter which, as long as it’s spicy. My taste buds aren’t going to know what hit them when I eat curry again in April for the first time in two years!

20// Above anything else, I believe we need to put an end to factory farming. It is in my opinion, the most inhumane and cruel act there is. Whether you eat meat or not, is not my beef. But I urge everyone to source it from organic, grass finished sources. The disgusting way we treat beautiful animals should be a crime.

Positive affirmation for the day: The past has no power over me. All that matters is today, this very moment. I live solely in the present.

Love this Jess!

Haha, I can totally understand the Sweet Valley High obsession (but did you have a Babysitters Club of your own? I was the Secretary because “I liked to write” – haha!) I’m also a huge fan of rock bios (you should check out Eric Clapton’s, Patti Boyd’s and Kurt Cobain’s – all awesome) and I’m super excited for you that you get to have a curry in a few months. Everyone needs a bit of curry in their life.

Thanks for sharing lovely xx

Ha ha I sure did! And I was always secretary too! We never had any clients though :( ha ha. Thanks for the book tips. I read and loved Kurt Cobain’s but I haven’t read the other two. Will have to hit up Book Depository and get them.

xx

You are so cute!

I laughed so hard at the first one. I remember you saying something at lunch about this heheheh. I am not a fan of Dreamword either and totally agree factory farming needs to STOP…

Thanks for sharing

Wowza, I can relate to over half of what you say. Thanks for that. I loved Jessica Wakefield and also I was way too interested in all Judy Blumes books. Dreamworld is over rated and I have Roxette, Phil Collins and half of the 90s artists in my ipod too. E Online is on my bookmarks lol

I love number #20 and couldn’t agree more. Factory farming sucks and makes me very sad.

OMG Jess, Grease 2 better than Grease 1 !!!

Loving your post – thanks for sharing more of yourself with your readers! It is hard to put yourself out there at times and one I am still working on as a blogger myself.

Lol!! Sweet Valley High :-) I had a similar addiction to my era’s equivalent Sweet Sixteen and if memory serves me the odd Sweet Valley High too.. Ah the cycle of life and teenage girls hey?!

This post was a really nice touch to start the year with Jess. But to be honest I enjoy and am drawn to you post, amongst lots of other things, for it’s very genuine, uplifting, relational and personal touch that you already weave into your posts.

Keep doing what you’re doing and wow, the countdown to April is on. What a fabulous milestone to look forward to.

xx

Hahaha Sweet Valley High! That brings back fond memories for me too :D

i loved this post… it’s like you are a younger, funnier etc version of me, as so many of your points are things i would list…. keep up the fantastic work Jess :) Ahh Sweet Valley High a classic. Another great classic is Beverly Hills 90210 the dvds are awesome

thank you . You are amazing

Really? Grease 2 over Grease 1… how? why?
and yes, Sweet Valley High was a huge part of my teenage life. {But i always wanted to be Sandy, from Grease}.
Thanks for sharing x

Ha ha I know! Two words though: Michelle Pfeiffer. I thought she was so cool! xx

I wanna Coo-oo-oo-ool Rider \
Jess you dag. ;)

Haha we could not be more opposite but that’s ok I still love your blog and that you gave us more of an insight to you. I do love unicorns and Michelle pfeiffer but not SOS ure the second was better than the first, maybe equal! Lol

Love it Jess! I was also a Sweet Valley High fan! My girl crush is on Miranda Kerr – she is so cool! Can’t wait to hear about the organic wine u found! And number 20 – I’m so glad u put that there! It’s so true and not enough people want to open their eyes to the truth! Another thing about me that u probably figured out is I have a problem with exclamation marks – I think it’s an addiction! ;-)

This was fun to read. Although, I think you are off your rocker on #10. As a die hard Grease fan, this is almost sacrilegious. I still like you, though.

Love your taste in music. Love the positive affirmations you include on the end of each blog too. and a big hell yes to stopping factory farming.

oh this totally sums u up gorgeous girl! Proud mary, lol i remember & miss those days xxx

Yes I totally agree loved Grease 2 and thought me and my friend were the only ones in the world to think that. Now we have found another :)
I’m also a 20 something and I love reading your posts. They keep me motivated on my health journey :) keep it up Jess!!!

Jess, regarding the point you made about no longer drinking, I’ve pledged not to touch a drop of alcohol during 2012 (I am (was until Jan 1st) a heavy drinker). How did you get started with being able to stop drinking? Any advice for someone who is 6 days in and craving an arvo beer / wine? I’m determined to not drink for a year (because trying to drink moderarately hasn’t worked in the past) and I would love your advice. Thanks.

JM » Hi JM, the best advice I can give it to continue reminding yourself of all of the benefits of not drinking. It’s so easy to constantly think about what you’re missing out on by staying sober and how nice it would be to drink, but this will only feed the desire to give in. For me, I miss the social aspect of drinking and giving that up has been the most difficult part of my journey, but I just keep having to remind myself of all of the benefits and blessings I am receiving in my life and in my health by not drinking. It’s a tough one, and it only gets easier the longer you stay sober. Wishing you all the best!!

Cheers Jess – I’ll remind myself of this everytime I feel the need for a drop – your advice is much appreciated!

I Love all of this Jess!!! Haha i know waaaay too much about the lives of celebrities also… you are such an amazing chick and we’ll have to have a curry together in April babe!
Much love,
Chloe :-) xxx

I too, spent hours in my bedroom when I was
ten years old singing The Carnival is Over! Sad but true.

I love Michelle’s rendition of Cool Rider!

Paul S » That’s my favourite part of the movie! Ha ha

FLEETWOOD MAC!!!

Wil Ferrell ALL THE WAY! xx

All of the above is just why I LOVE you xx

Sara » And I LOVE you! xx

Fascinating list Jessica :) Sweet Valley High was my favourite book series as a preteen as well…in fact, I stayed up one Christmas night reading it until dawn it was that good !! Love unicorns too…and that photo of you on the Himalayan mountains is inspiring…all you need is the music to Rocky…must visit Nepal one day :) ~ Peace ~

Russell Brand! Unicorns! Nicole Richie! Sweet Valley High! Karaoke!

We should hang out ;)

Jess you always write from the heart and this is what matters most x

Jess I just found your gorgeous blog via A life of perfect days. I absolutely love it, your inspiration boards are the best way to start the morning. Your ‘About Me’ made me cry and smile simulatenously….and I think we have the same iPod playlist! Rock on old school tunes!

WOW! What a great website and an amazing lady! I stumbled across this in my Google search for ‘Oil Pulling’ and haven’t been able to stop reading all your articles! I’ve saved you as a ‘favourite’ to come back to tomorrow. Again, wow – you’re so incredibly inspirational!!! :-)

You have a girl crush on Nicole Richie – I think my new girl crush is you haha :)
You are truly an inspiration and i wish i knew you even better.

glad to see im not the only one who is afraid ( im sure there are more of us out there)

Hi
I have just come across your website while looking for inspiration. It is great to find something positive about natural healing. How long has it taken you to go into remission and do you attribute it mainly to the Gerson diet?
Thanks
x

Hi Jess, how did you become a holistic health coach? Thank you for your answer. Celine xx

My 1st cd was Meatloaf! Probably even daggier than The Seekers! I remember tossing up between that & Michael Bolton… Think I was in year 4…
