Q&A with C Coconut Water founder Adam Abrams

C Coconut Water founders, Adam Abrams, Zac Jex and Julian Tobias

When it comes to coconut water, I have two very different (but not necessarily that far removed) associations with it. The first time I fell in love with coconut water was in Thailand, when we sucked it back straight from a coconut to relieve our hangovers. My second memory of coconut water was when I drank cartons of it during the severely dehydrating and thirst-inducing vitamin C infusions I was having twice a week, just after the second time I was diagnosed with cancer. It’s amazing stuff.

So I was pretty excited when I had the chance to speak with Adam Abrams, who is one of the founders of C Coconut Water, along with Julian Tobias and Zac Jex. I wanted to know more about the miracles of this healing juice, and how the boys came to create Australia’s first certified organic coconut water.

Coming from a background in the nightclub industry and the Sydney party scene, what made you decide to have a crack at coconut water?
It was for a few reasons; we had been drinking coconuts for years for health reasons (and hangover cures!). We then we opened The Island, a floating beach club style venue on Sydney Harbour. We were going through 30 cases of coconuts a week and couldn’t believe how much people loved them. We then wanted to find an easier way to consume them as carrying more than six is very bulky and then messy having to chop them all.

Tell us about how C Coconut Water came to life. What lengths did you go to when hunting down the ideal coconuts?
We actually went all over the world from Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines looking for the perfect coconuts. This might sound strange but every country’s coconuts taste different due to the soil quality – for instance Indonesia’s are very salty and as a result their coconut water has the highest sodium content of coconut water in the world.

Two years travelling the world sounds like a pretty amazing “research trip”. Did you learn any particular health and wellness wisdom nuggets during your travels?
Mainly we kept learning more and more about the health benefits of coconut water, and just how amazing they are. We also learnt how useful the coconut is to farming communities where they commercialise the whole coconut. They make milk out of the flesh, water from the inside, and they even use the outer husk to power their boilers.

How did you manage to keep the coconut water in its natural and untouched state? Without any preservatives or other shelf life lengthening nasties?
It was mainly through the use of our particular type of packaging, TetraPak. TetraPak is the only solution for coconut water for many reasons. Firstly coconut water is hyper sensitive to light. Packing our coconut water in a TetraPak is the best way, as the coconut water still thinks it’s in a coconut! TetraPak maintains the taste profile, is the most nutritious and is better than any other type of packaging for coconut water. Glass or plastic packaging both deteriorate the taste profile of coconut.

What are coconut water’s top five claims to nutritional fame?
1. Contains more potassium than bananas
2. Coconut water is more isotonic that most sports drinks and has less total sugar as well as calories in comparison
3. Coconut Water saves lives – Coconut water can be used as substitute for blood plasma it is a universal donor and has been hooked directly up to IV drips in Africa (It’s totally sterile and has an ideal ph level)
4. Research studies suggest that cytokinins (e.g., kinetin and trans-zeatin) in coconut water showed significant anti-ageing, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-thrombotic effects.
5. Coconut water is better than processed baby milk – It contains lauric acid, which is present in human mother’s milk

I LOVE Coconut Water! If I can’t be swigging it straight from a coconut in Venice Beach, the next best thing is C. Interesting fact: Madonna invested $1.5 million into coconut water because she believes in its healthy properties so much. And other celeb investors include Matthew McConaughey and Demi Moore.

  4. Sal says:

Amongst many benefits, Coconut water is great for new mothers as it increases breast milk production. Oh, and have you ever seen someone climb a coconut tree – awesome!

  5. Kristen says:

Fun fact: the name Coconut means “monkey face”
Cooking with coconut oil helps maintain cholesterol levels, increases immunity and increase metabolism.

  6. Maggie Ball says:

Great comp. Here’s a fun coconut fact: In Thailand, they use trained monkeys to harvest coconuts.

  7. Debra says:

Did you know that ‘coco’ means ‘monkey face’ in Spanish and Portugese? Since the three dark indents in the coconut look like eyes and a nose and combined with the hairy brown surface of a mature coconut – you can see how the coconut got its name. :)

  8. Claire says:

Chop it in half and it makes a fabulous bra which can be paired with a grass skirt!

  9. Amanda says:

Love this! Coconut water can be used (in emergencies) as a substitute for blood plasma as it is sterile & has an ideal PH level.

  10. Diana says:

I love coconut water and use EVCO for my skin and in cooking and baking. It is a wonderful skin moisturizer and is exceptional in healing wounds. It hydrates you, gives you energy…who needs sugar filled sports drinks…when this healthy alternative tastes great! And another fact is that there is ongoing search for new approaches to combat infectious pathogens, particularly those resistant to conventional antibiotics, led a team of international researchers to discover three antimicrobial peptides in coconut water. Nowadays infections resistant to antibiotics is on the rise, so drink your coconut water especially if your spend time in gyms or fitness centers it totally hydrates you and gives you that extra energy to keep going! Celebrities like Demi Moore, Matthew McConaughey and Madonna are huge consumers of coconut water and wise investors, they know the many health benefits!

  11. Diana says:

Another fun fact…. Coconut water is considered the “father of modern tissue culture science”. Currently, research is being done to see if coconut can be used in hair regrowth and anti-aging cosmetics. Now, wouldn’t that be wonderful ;) And another….How did the coconut get it’s name? The sailors aboard Vasco de Gama’s ships gave the coconut its name. They called it “Coco”, named after a grimacing face or hobgoblin. The brown, hairy husk and three face-like dimples made them think the seed looked like a sort of spirit. When the “coco” came to England, the suffix of nut was added and that’s how the name came about.

  12. Stefanie says:

Unfortunately, coconuts are being classified by USDA as a nut therefore is on the “nut” list for allergy information in public schools. Coconuts are not nuts but a seed which can help young children immensely because of the high quality fats found in its flesh. The fats are beneficial for brain function, building new and repairing damaged neurons which increase the ability to concentrate and learn. It’s a must in children’s diets!

  13. Kirsten says:

Giant Coconut crabs are so large and strong they can open a coconut with one swipe of its claw

  14. Naomi says:

Coconut water can be used (in emergencies) as a substitute for blood plasma

  15. Jards says:

Coconuts taken internally, it seems to be unanimously agreed, can be a GOOD thing.
Coconuts taken externally, is apparently a BAD thing… last year, 20 people in the US were killed by ‘falling coconuts’
The lesson here could be – always look UP when placing your towel on the beach in the midday sun…

  16. louis says:

coconut oil i the best for cooking because it withstands heat better then any other oil, also it does not need bile to be absorbed but is directly absorbed from the portal vein in the liver, therefore it can restore a failing liver.

  17. Shannon says:

Well it looks like a lot of facts have already been listed. We love coconuts in our household……but a great use that I get tons of compliments on is…………..to use it in your hair. Forget all the expensive conditioning or shine serums, coconut oil totally trumps them all! Certain components in the coconut keep the hair strong, vitalized, nourished and protected from the effects of ageing (lauric acid, capricious acid, vit E, moisture retaining capacity, and anti dandruff).

  18. Jenny says:

A coconut is the largest known seed in the world!

  19. Kay Lani says:

Lets talk about coconuts being prehistoric! This prehistoric plant most likely first floated in from the South Pacific islands. Because coconuts are water resistance, they can stay afloat as they cross the ocean. This is so cool because coconuts can be found floating and beaching themselves all over the world, in regions like the Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and even Africa. And then of course our trusty sailors and sea-explorers spread the growth of coconuts even farther by taking the seed (yes, it is a seed – not a fruit or a nut) along with them on their ships for food. You Go Coconuts!

  20. Michelle says:

Coconut oil is the new KY!

  21. Melinda says:

The coconut produces the most functional oil I can think of, however as a food its often considered an unhealthy option because of it’s saturated fat content. It’s true coconut oil contains saturated fat, but…. coconut oil contains mostly medium-chain fatty acids rather than long-chain fatty acids (found in almost everything else we eat… including vegetables!). We metabolise these fatty acids differently. So although coconut oil contains saturated fat, it’s in a form we can metabolise effectively. It doesn’t have a negative impact on our cholesterol levels, plus it can even help to prevent heart disease. And it remains stable at higher cooking temperatures. There aren’t many food sources that contain medium-chain fatty acids to offer these benefits. But coconut oil is one of them!

  22. Michelle says:

Coconut Water is an Antibacterial. Coconut water contains monolaurin, an antiviral, antibacterial and antiprozoal monoglyceride that is used to kill lipid-coated viruses such as HIV, Herpes, cytomegalovirus, flu and various pathogenic bacteria.

  23. What a cool prize, thank you Jess and hot coconut boys x 3!

    xLouise

  24. Daniella says:

Coconut oil is a great makeup remover! No more harsh chemicals.

  25. Ananda says:

mmm coconut water is amazing! So so many great uses, some of my favourites are:

To thin out smoothies when blending or i freeze the coconut water in ice cube trays and put them in my blender to chill smoothes.
I make home made ice blocks for the kids, perfect for a hot summers day or for when they aren’t feeling well or have tummy bug as it keeps them hydrated.
Before i fly overseas i drink coconut water and as soon as i land i do the same as it keeps me really hydrated and my skin doesn’t feel dry and tight.
I put a little organic apple cider vinegar in coconut water as pick me up and the kids love it with a splash of Gogi berry juice.
I use coconut water in my home made mud mask
Add a little freshly squeezed lemon juice and gargle, perfect for sore throats as the coconut water is antibacterial.

Coconut shells make amazing wind chimes!

The C Coconut water in the tetra pack is a brilliant idea! This could be frozen and the kids could eat it with a spoon plus its perfect to pop in their lunch boxes. I’ll have to hunt it down here in Sydney.

Thanks Jess, another great post xx

  52. erica says:

True, Coconut oil is a type of saturated fat, however, there are two types of saturated fats and coconut oil belongs to the healthy variety while animal saturated fats are the harmful ones.  You can’t get fat on raw cold-pressed coconut oil.  Your body does not store coconut oil instead it burns it as fuel, cleanses out the bad stored fats and helps your skin radiate.  Not to mention it tastes delicious – very buttery & perfect for raw desserts, baked sweets, popcorn, and even eggs!
Long Chain Saturated Fats (LCSF) – These are the 2nd most harmful next to hydrogenated fats. “Long Chain” is the culprit behind unhealthy saturated fats. They are the reason saturated fats have such a bad reputation. When LCSF’s are consumed, they are directed to the small intestine where toxic fat cells  are produced.  These acidic fats flow throughout the veins and arteries creating storage and blockage.
These have been proven to raise “bad” LDL blood cholesterol levels, contributing to heart disease. These “bad” fats are extremely concentrated, a key to obesity, carry many toxins, and are difficult to break down. They are found most commonly in animal and dairy products. They are highest in beef, pork, chicken and dairy products. Other sources are palm oil and cottonseed oil – all oils used extensively in processed foods. Saturated fats such as butter or margarine are solid or semi-solid at room temperature and should be omitted from your diet as much as possible.
Medium Chain and Short Chain Saturated Fats (MCSF & SCSF) – Although we do need a certain amount of saturated fats in our diet, they should come from “Medium and Short Chain” saturated fats, such as cold-pressed coconut oil. What makes these saturated fats so vital to health is their ability to be absorbed directly by the liver, where they are immediately available to the body and are sent out as a pure source of energy. These types of fatty acids are unlikely to cause unhealthy weight gain due to their quick digestion and energy conversion, never having the opportunity to be stored as body fat.

    i love coconuts!

      Flourless Chocolate Coconut Cupcakes
      Ingredients:
      3/4 cup coconut oil
      1 1/2 cups Coconut sugar
1/3 cup honey, maple syrup or yacon syrup
      2 eggs
      1 Tbsp vanilla extract
      1 cup coconut milk
1/2 cup plain yogurt (I used coconut but goat or other is fine)
      3/4 cup Coconut Flour
      3/4 cup Hazelnut Flour
      1/2 cup Tapioca Flour
1 cup cacao powder 1 3/4 tsp baking powder
      1/4 tsp Celtic sea Salt
1 Tbsp crunchy peanut butter, optional but a yummy addition
      Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees
Soften the coconut oil and cream in a large mixing bowl with the eggs and sweetener using an electric mixer or even by hand with a wire whisk  works fine.
Pour in the milk, yogurt and vanilla and cream or whisk until well mixed.
In a separate bowl stir together the flours, cacao powder and salt.
Pour the dry batter into the wet ingredients and mix well.  If you are adding the peanut butter stir it in at this time.
Pour the batter into cupcake holders either greased with coconut oil or filled with paper cupcake liners.  I like to use a large ice cream scooper to scoop the batter and place into the cupcake pan, giving you even and smooth cupcakes.
Bake for about 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cupcake come out clean.

      these are yummy and coconutty!!

  53. Lucky says:

It’s not by accident that the people in some cultures call the coconut palm the “tree of life.” Coconuts and coconut water are health promoting in so many different ways.

Coconut water is so wonderfully refreshing and good for you. Here are some of the benefits of coconut water:

    coconut water

One of the amazing things about coconut water is that it’s got a very similar electrolyte balance to our own blood. It is also identical to human blood plasma.

Because of these properties, medical practitioners in some parts of the world regularly use it as an intravenous (IV) fluid when regular IV’s are not available.

Coconut water can also be used as a blood plasma transfusion.

Fortunately coconut water is naturally sterile, so it doesn’t pose any safety issues.
Here are some other health benefits of coconut water:

Is high in potassium, magnesium, vitamins, and minerals.
It contains small amount of natural sugars.
It’s low in fats – it does contain a small amount of lauric acid, a medium chain saturated fat which is really good for you. Lauric acid is naturally found in breast milk and helps with brain development
    It supports your immune system
It’s great for your digestive system

Coconut water hydrates, nourishes, and refreshes you. It’s one of the best beverages you could ever drink.

One of the best benefits of coconut water is that it beats dehydration quickly and effectively.

So, forget about vitamin waters, energy drinks, and sports drinks. Coconut water is way better for you. It’s completely natural, full of vitamins and minerals, and it’s got a good balance of electrolytes.

Coconut water is lower in calories and contains less sodium than regular sports drinks – Another evidence that food in its natural state is far superior to any human invention.

  54. The name coconut – came from the Spanish and Portugese word Coco – which means ‘Monkey face’ …. the first explorers from Spain and Portugal thought the three dark ‘eyes’ on the coconuts resembled Monkeys faces.

  55. in emergency circumstances, coconut water has been used in transfusions since it’s likeness to our body’s electrolytes is something like 80%.

Also, coconuts, when passing through the irradiation process to our country from another country, still maintains it’s enzymatic integrity. Perhaps the hard shell protects the precious nutrients. such a gift to us, despite the harsh process it has to endure. TOTALLY earns our respect.

The scientific name for coconut is Cocos nucifera. Early Spanish explorers called it coco, which means “monkey face” because the three indentations (eyes) on the hairy nut resembles the head and face of a monkey. Nucifera means “nut-bearing.”

  60. After suffering from chronic fatigue years ago, my system ‘bottoms out’ really quickly. Coconut water is an instant pick-me-up when I feel myself sinking. While we were staying on Molokai, Hawaii for a month this year, most of the food is flown or ferried to the island. Subsequently, by the time it gets arrives, there are very few nutrients left in any of the fruit and vegetables, and organic is very rare. So, every day, my husband would crack a coconut. We would drink the water and eat the flesh. It literally saved us!

  61. Laura says:

Is C-Water pasteurized? What is the shelf life?

  64. Linda says:

During the Second World War, my great uncle was fighting in Papua New Guinea. He used to send my father (his nephew) who was three years old, regular letters. One day my father received a coconut in the mail. It had his name and address burnt into it. My great uncle passed away a few years ago but my father, now 71, still has the coconut. Coconuts have a special place in our family :)
