CONFESSIONS OF A PSYCHIC: You do what for a living?
I’m so excited to throw a brand new segment at you guys today. I want to make sure my new-look site has that new-car smell for as long as possible, and there is no better way to do that than by introducing a new voice and a new topic into the wellness mixer. I promise to stop saying the word “new” now. Meet Rebecca Dettman. She is a former magazine journalist who traded in the big city life to move to the Adelaide Hills where she lives with her chiropractor hubby and their two adorable kidlets. Rebecca is also psychic, which I find totally fascinating. She writes regularly on her website, Psyched In Stilettos and has a weekly newsletter that would be a wonderful treat for you to sign up for. Just below these words that I have typed for you is Rebecca’s first post of what will now be a regular column on The Wellness Warrior called ‘Confessions of a Psychic’. Everyone, please make Rebecca welcome.
CONFESSIONS OF A PSYCHIC: You do what for a living?
It’s an unusual job. When revealed at a dinner party, it either creates an uproar or sinks like a lead balloon. I’m always asked the same questions: “How accurate are you?” followed by “Which horse is going to win the Melbourne Cup?” and “Have you ever predicted that somebody was going to die suddenly?”
I’ve been psychic all my life, but only figured it out in 2005 and officially got the guts to call myself one in 2009. Having spent ten years as a journalist who collected information and rehashed it to make sense for the average person, I’ve now morphed into a ‘cosmic journalist’ who channels information from a higher source and rehashes it to make sense for my clients.
I don’t do incense, I don’t do crushed purple velvet and I don’t need cards, tea leaves, palms, birth dates, photos or any other props to bring information through (although all that stuff can be super fun to play with.) And forget flipping over tarot cards and muttering vague forecasts about ‘a handsome dark haired man in October’; the modern psychic is more of an intuitive counsellor who assists her clients in changing negative beliefs and releasing emotional blockages. The goal: reigniting personal power.
There’s not a whole lot of jobs that can claim that, within five minutes of meeting a complete stranger, you’re privy to their most intimate secrets (divorce, suicide, incest, debt). Everyone wants information on the Top 3: Love, Money and Career. (That probably hasn’t changed for centuries!) Offshoots of those include family, health, travel and housing. More spiritual types want to know “Who was I in a past life?”, “What are my soul lessons in this lifetime?” and “What does my American Indian spirit guide have to say?”
As someone who channels information, I’m very aware that it passes through my own ‘filter’, which I have a responsibility to keep ‘clean’ (unbiased, non-judgmental, no agenda). That’s why I do lots of self-work – NET, NLP, EFT, Theta Healing and a bunch of other therapeutic acronyms. A good psychic talks the talk and walks the walk – they can identify and unclutter their own crap, and have a pretty watertight moral code. Confidentiality, anyone?
Loads of famous psychics are highly entertaining and superbly accurate, but they’re what I call ‘psychic-but-not-spiritual’ – there’s not really a deeper belief system, or greater understanding of the universe, at play. It’s a bit like Harry Potter – JK Rowling’s entire magical premise lacked any sort of spiritual foundation. Terrific fun, but light as fairy dust.
I’ve seen it all and heard it all. Nothing shocks me. Your biggest, darkest, most shameful secret will not raise an eyebrow from me. Whether you’re in love with your brother, astrally project into space ships, talk to dolphins or believe in Bigfoot, that’s cool – and all somehow ‘true’ – by me. The only thing I know for sure is that universe is a VERY mysterious place, and that’s why, when people ask me what I personally believe, I answer: “EVERYTHING!”

Positive affirmation for the day: Anything and everything is possible. If I can imagine it, I can create it.

A psychic after my own heart. I soften the blow with the dinner party conversation by calling my self a psychotic whoops psychic. I use humor a bit – i suppose I’m still in the gutless stage…. it is getting easier though. And I hate purple velvet too – I call them ‘purple ladies’ – you know the ones I man. Anyway – there’s a judgment that I have to work on …
I don’t work with things either – but I’m also a massage therapist, so I find that relaxes people and there’s no holding back – if ever there was – sometimes hearing everybody’s life story that i ever meet is a little taxing.
Anyway, enjoyed your post immensely, have a great week. x
So lovely to read your first post Rebecca and I so look forward eagerly to your future posts, I love your down to earth yet magical approach to the often mis-judged world of being a pyschic. A wonderful addition to the Wellness Warrior team, helping us all maintain a healthy mind, body and soul.
Jess your vision for your beautiful blog is growing wonderfully, A blessing t us all. Love to you.xxx
Rebecca Dettman…….the amazingly compassionate, brilliant, truly accurate psychic…… I have had wonderful accurate, funny, supportive readings from Rebecca…….and you get it all ….there is no holding back…….down to earth and tells it how it is………thanks again earth angel……….and great that you are spreading your wings on the internet……XXOOOOO
Excellent column, can’t wait to read more!
(PS – The nerd in me wishes to dispute your Harry Potter synopsis – I think the series has a strong moral and spiritual code: everything comes down to love. What more does one need?!!)
Hey guys,
So wonderful reading your comments, thank you for sharing all your thoughts and instant reactions! And Jay, hmmm you’ve got me thinking. Maybe I should have written ‘magic-but-not-spiritual’? I’m still not convinced that love and morals are quite what I mean… they’re the essential elements to any formulaic Hollywood movie or timeless read… I’m more wondering if JK Rowling has any historical / research / philosophical understanding to all these ancient ideas and concepts she’s dug up for rollicking entertainment value… Hmm gonna think about this one some more and I can feel a blog post coming on…?!
Welcome Rebecca. Wow, I’m a bit jealous as I’ve always thought being a psychic would be cool. My own daughter (age 11) has her moments which can be a little unnerving at times. There’s the burden of always having to be honest and transparent. Not much I can get by her. I didn’t even do the Santa thing with her as a toddler because I knew she’d see right through it. Anyway, I can’t wait to learn more from you. I love how you said you believe in Everything.
PS (I had the same knee-jerk reaction with the Harry Potter comment. My thoughts……JK Rowling isn’t sure of what her own thoughts on God are so that spiritual confusion comes out in the deeper parts of Harry. Would love to read that HP post you are thinking of writing).
Thanks Amanda, agree with your sentiments. More on the Harry Potter thing… I just have to add this because I saw JK Rowling being interviewed by Oprah last week (which was F.A.S.C.I.N.A.T.I.N.G.) during which she adamantly declared that she “doesn’t believe in magic at all”. Like, WHAT?!?!
Her personal rags-to-riches story and battle with depression also has some interesting karmic/soul journey elements… Hmm.
