The Gerson Therapy Supplements
![]() |

I’ve had quite a few requests lately asking for me to share the list of supplements I take on the Gerson Therapy. So, here it comes. Even though these supplements are specifically designed for the Gerson patient, they are actually really beneficial for anyone who wants to give their overall diet a bit of a boost. They are all natural and most of them are harmless at any dose (apart from the thyroid and B12).
Some of you might think the list is a bit extreme, but I assure you that it is totally manageable. It’s nowhere near as much of a pain in the ass to get through as the medicine cabinet full of pills and potions I was taking prior to Gerson. I swear, as soon as we heard that a supplement had anti-cancer properties, I was all over it. I’ve taken everything from sea cucumbers to bovine cartilage. This list is like a trip to the beach in comparison.
The supplements a Gerson patient must take generally varies to suit the individual. But all the medications are designed to support the diet therapy by increasing the energy capacity of the cell and by increasing the rate of detoxification.
Potassium compound
According to Dr Gerson, the basic problem of all chronic degenerative diseases is the loss of potassium from, and the penetration of sodium into, the cells. Adding large amounts of potassium (a 10% solution of three potassium salts) to the already potassium-rich diet, enables the sick body to release excess sodium. Potassium not only encourages detoxification of sodium from the cell (sodium inhibits oxidation and perpetuates the disease cycle) but is also a key activator in the oxidative cycle hence it governs oxidation, energy production and the metabolism of the whole cell.
To prepare the compound, 100g of the potassium salts are dissolved in one litre of water and stored in a dark glass bottle. On the full therapy, four teaspoons of potassium compound are added to 10 of the juices. This is reduced after three or four weeks to two teaspoons in 10 juices.
Thyroid and Lugol’s solution
When thyroid and iodine in the form of ½ strength Lugol’s solution are added to the patient’s regime, the immune system is reactivated and kicks healing into gear.
The thyroid tablet and the Lugol’s solution are both tailored to the patient’s specific condition.
Niacin
Also known as nicotinic acid, or vitamin B3, niacin assists in the digestion of protein and helps to open capillary circulation and bring freshly oxygenated blood to all the body tissues. I take three of these a day – one during each of the meals.
Anyone who’s ever taken niacin will be familiar with the notorious niacin “flush”. If you take the pill too fast, and don’t let it dissolve under your tongue, you break out in a delightful red rash and your skin literally feels like it’s crawling. It passes pretty quickly, but it’s not the nicest feeling.
Niacin has also been said to help with depression, alcoholism and to quit smoking.
Liver capsules
Back in the day, Gerson patients used to have to drink several fresh raw liver juices each day. Man am I glad I wasn’t around then! These days, we just have to take liver capsules containing dried, defatted, powdered liver. Two of these are taken three times a day – with each of the plain carrot juices. According to Dr Virginia Livingston, the combination of the dry liver with the carrot juice produces abscisic acid, a precursor of vitamin A, which is essential in attacking tumour tissue.
B12 and crude liver injections
These injections, which are mostly crude liver with a small amount of vitamin B12, are also given to aid in the restoration of the liver. As all educated vegans and vegetarians know, we don’t get B12 from plant sources, so a supplement is needed. The B12 also helps to restore the hemoglobin count in the blood for patients who may be anemic.
These injections are given every day at the start of the therapy, but are reduced to every second day and then down to just once a week.
Pancreatin
Pancreatic enzymes are super important in the digestion and elimination of tumour tissue. The dosage is three tablets per day – one after each meal. For extra large tumours, larger doses are given.
Colostrum
Essential for aiding in the boosting of the immune system and helping to protect your body, you may recall colostrum as the substance found in mother’s milk. I take six capsules of this per day – two before each meal.
Acidol pepsin
These guys supply digestive stomach juices and aid protein digestion and the absorption of iron. They can also help with those who have poor appetite – a crucial aid due to the fact that Gerson Therapy relies on the high intake of fresh organic food and juices. Six are taken per day – two before each meal.
Digestive enzymes
When you switch to an all-plant and mostly raw diet, you can often experience a lot of gas, bloating and digestive discomfort. Digestive enzymes assist in the digestion of foods and help to eliminate these issues. I take nine a day – three before each meal.
Coenzyme Q10
This coenzyme is valuable in replacing some of the nutrients that were available in the discontinued raw liver juices. They are also critical to the energy cycle. I take six of these per day – two after each meal.
Milk Thistle
This herb has awesome detoxifying and liver protective qualities and can protect against some severe liver toxins. I take six per day – two during each meal. Looking after the liver is one of the most important factors of Gerson Therapy.
Do you take anything on list already? What supplements do you swear by?
Positive affirmation for the day: Today I am willing to experience all of my feelings without running away from them, distracting myself from them or numbing myself from them. Feeling is healing!

I take niacin daily and sometimes take enough to get the flush then sit in the infrared sauna for 1-2 hours. Great detox.
I was wondering where you get your injections from here in Oz? When you purchase from ISHI Medical do you enter your credit card online? I noticed that it's not a secure server that they use when I make a purchase. Extremely unsafe.
I'm looking to add lugols iodine, potassium and injections for a while and see how I feel.
Hi Jess. Have you heard of any issues of taking digestive enzymes long term? I too take digestive enzymes, pancreatic ones for my leaky gut and food intolerances. These have been prescribed by my naturopath. I ran out the other day and tried to get some just at my local health food store. The lady there gave my a bit of a lecture on her views of taking these on a long term basis (your body will stop producing them). I'm a bit skeptical about that. Rosie
Hi Jess,
Can you please confirm where you source the medications from and how you pay and the reliablity of the supplier.
Regards,
Geoff
Jess,
my immediate curiosity is how much this is all costing you! Of course, every penny is worth your life; moreso, I wonder about spending $1000/month on vitamins in a preventative manner (no cancer diagnosis.) What are your thoughts about the basics?
JP
@CS:
Wow – well done for getting in a sauna after a niacin flush! I buy my injections from ISHI as well. I email them my order and give them my credit card details that way so that I don't have to enter them into the site.
@Anonymous:
No, I haven't heard anything about the dangers of taking them long term. As we get older, our bodies naturally stop making these enzymes. So when we take supplements, we are more giving our bodies a helping hand rather than making them dependent on them. I'd say they're pretty safe.
@Geoff:
I buy all of my supps from ISHI Medical. I email them my order and send credit card details in the email. This is who Gerson recommends we get our stuff though, so I'm guessing they are reliable.
@JP:
It costs a fair bit. There's no way of sugar coating that. But now that I just take this list, it costs less than all the supplements I was on before Gerson. If I didn't have cancer and was just taking supplements for prevention I would probably just take Colostrum, CoQ10, digestive enyzymes and B12 (if veg). And maybe potassium and niacin? That's most of them though, isn't it? Haha.
Jess x
The liver capsules sound kind of disgusting but at least better than the juice.
Question: Gerson is not only used to treat cancer but a lot of other conditions too right? Do you know anything about autoimmunity and Gerson therapy? Seems like the therapy is highly stimulation for the immune system as this is something that is in general not recommended for people with autoimmune acitivity.
Hi I just started the gerson therapy from home for Lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome, My rheumatologist told me the plaquenil did not work and I need to take an extremely toxic madication that requires liver blood tests every 2 months, If that doesn’t work they would add prednisone to stop my immune system all together. Also I see a dentist and eye doctor for my sjogren’s syndrome I took salagen (helps produce more saliva) eye doctor gave me re-stasis, prednisolone, and plugged my tear ducts to have more moist in my eyes. NOTHING WORKED! I came to realize they will all just keep testing new meds that do not take care of the problem but just cover it (even that didn’t happen for me)
I started juicing 2 weeks and stopped had lot of cravings, hallucinations n all kinds of weird things then gave up.
I started looking for help online n found the gerson therapy. I haven’t consulted any doctor but just read the book and bought the supplements and started. I’m at week 3 1st week was awesome I slept like a baby and everything was fine, lots of elimination. 14,15,16th day I had flew like symptoms and shivers today day 17 I’m feeling fine and energetic (did take 1 advil) I’m only doing the juicing and supplements, I can barely finish the 104 oz juices of the day maybe later I can eat more. Also I think the enemas are helping a lot with elimination and cravings also no hallucinations this time. I do have aching but that never went away since I was diagnosed with my autoimmune diseases. I have an appointment with my rhumy on 01/02 and will see if the inflammation is any better. I won’t tell her I stopped the meds.
I really should start reading through my comments. I meant to say "highly stimulating" of course. Oh well. Good thing to not be too much of a perfectionist either.
I would say the disclaimer is there to avoid being sued as some people would simply rely on these products to cure them, when we all know there are other things that need to come into play to help heal, not just the supplements you swallow
Niacin is the best and will make you live longer as per Doctor Abram Hoffer. This doctor found out in 1955 that people with schizophrenia were Vitamin B3 DEPENDENT. He cured 90% of his patients.
Vitamin B3 is the Gold standard for the treatment of cholesterol.

So Jess do you email ISHI your credit card details?
@CS:
Yep, I email [email protected] my order and cred card deets. Might be a good idea to just touch base with them first though.
Jess
Thanks
I will contact them. I'm not comfortable emailing credit card details, not very secure. I'll see what they say.
Is it okay to take probiotics during the gerson therapy?
I am a Naturopath specilising in digestive disorders and detoxification. very much believe in raw foods, juicing and all Gerson's are saying. My belief is also that we need to first detoxify the system. The best supplement I found in my 14 years of practicing is MaxGXL which helps to produce more glutathione.Glutathione is the master antioxidant, cleansing the liver and other organs, a very potent detoxifier.
When the system is toxic we are not able to absorb the nutrients anyway, so by detoxifying first we are stimulating digestion, absorbtion and elimination. Never felt more energetic and more vibrant in my entire life. Same with my patients which are recovering from most serious issues. Have a look at the testimonials on youtube: gosialovesmaxgxl Regards Gosia. Thanks for your inspirational emails, love them. Gosia from detoxhouse.com.au
Hi Jess,
Where about do you get your B12 and crude liver injections from + coenzyme Q10 from? I cannot find them on the ISHI Medical site. Thanks
x
Tash » Hi Tash, I buy them both from ISHI. You may just have to ask for them. However, I know they have been out of B12 and crude liver for a while. I have just been taking extra dessicated liver capsules and a sublingual B12 from the health store. x
Hi Jess,
I bought the Pancreatic 325 Digestive Enzymes from ISHI Health. Are these the pancreatin enzymes or are they the digestive enzymes you mention in the post above? Im confused about which ones I have.
Thanks heaps,
Alex
Alex » Hi Alex, yes that sounds like the pancreatin ones. The other digestive enzymes are called Infl-zyme forte. x
Hey Jess! Were you on the Armour thyroid? I started on it last week (2 grains a day) & the first couple of days I felt increased energy & then the next few days after I started feeling very drowsy & fatigued. Did you experience any of that due to thyroid? I also started taking a little melatonin at bedtime around the same time. Any experience or feedback would be appreciated.
Thank you!
Holly
Is there a specific benefit to using the red rubber catheter for the enema bucket? Reason I ask is that I have not been able to hold more than 8 oz. of the coffee solution at one time. Generally I introduce 8 oz. 4 times. I can only hold the first 3 for 2 minutes or so and the last for 15 minutes. The height of the bucket is between 14 – 17 inches (I alternate)
I have tried using half strength solution, but it really doesn’t seem to make a difference. I’ve been at this for 3 months and thought by now I should be able to hold more.
Are you really taking liver injections? I thought they stopped that a long time ago (like in 1989). Isn’t that what the deslicated liver tablets are for? And the B12 — Where to you get the supplies to inject yourself with B12? Do you think the sublingual is as effective? — Thanks!
Shawn » Hi Shawn, Gerson patients take both liver injections and liver tablets. It was the liver juice that was discontinued ages ago. All Gerson supplies are sourced from ishimedical.com. The sublingual is not as effective as the injection, but sublingual drops are better than tablets as long as it is the methylcobalamin type.
Hi again Jessica. Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to reply about these things. You are kind of a celebrity. I contacted ISHI — They can’t send B12 injections and liver to the USA so I guess I’m out of luck there. I guess I’ll go for the sublingual B12 as you mentioned. I’m not sure about the liver injections. I need a source for that also; I’m not even sure what to ask for. And then that search got me to looking at the Armour Thyroid — looks like that isn’t available either. ISHI doesn’t sell it. Their price list does have Thyroid, but they state it is not approved by Gerson.
And then, the Thyroid seems kinda serious. If you are already on Thyroid (synthroid in my Mother’s case), then I would think you would need a doctor to figure out the proper dose. And then, in my research online it seems like the Armour Thyroid has a bit of a black eye in the medical community so getting a doctor to prescribe it sounds like it might be difficult.
Sorry for all the questions. Everything about the Gerson therapy seems pretty doable (hard, but doable), but the supplements I’m having trouble with. Thanks again — Shawn
Hi Jess, please tell us about the Thyroid you are taking. I read in the instructions from Gerson Institute that it should be Armour or Nature-Throid and ISHI doesn’t sell it, as it is written above. What kind of thyroid are you taking and how much. Thank you for all your work!!!
Gi » Hi Gi, it is called Novotiral and we order it from ISHI. I take 1/2 a tablet per day, but this is different for everyone I think. This is what I have been reduced to.
Thank you so much! Is it approved from Gerson institute? I think we have the same medicine in my country and it will be much easier to by than the Armour or Nature-Throid… I will go to Hungarian Gerson clinik next week and will see how much will be my dose. I was surprised to read the doses prescribed in the begining… Do you also start with taking high doses three times daily?
I want to send you a big hug for all your work and information posted here! It is so helpfull!
Gi » Yes it is approved by Gerson. Yep, I started with the higher dose in the beginning. Thanks so much! Wishing you all the best for your Gerson journey x
Hi Gi,
I read on this blog that you were about to go to Hungarian clinic. I am trying to get my dad into it for this coming March. Can you give me some feedback on the clinic etc. I will really appreciate any info. thank you
Hey Jess,
You look fantastic! I hope your mom is doing great as well. I am not sick, just want to feel the best I can. I do feel tired. Have been eating Vegan for the last 6 months, started juicing carrot/apple (1/2 pound 2 times per day) and the green juice once a day. Do you think I should do the coffee enemas? Do you take a mulit-vitamin? I heard you’re not supposed to drink water, because of all the juices, and it interferes with the stomach acid, is that true? If you were on a budget, what 2 or 3 supplements are must haves, for you? Sorry for so many questions… lol! Thanks for sharing your experiences, and all of the wonderful info! Take good care of yourself… : )
Lori Hempstead » Hi Lori, thanks so much! I think coffee enemas are amazing so if you feel drawn to giving them a go I recommend them. No, I don’t take a multi vitamin, but they can be good as long as you choose one that is good quality – high amounts of the vitamins you need and no filler ingredients. If I only had to choose a couple of supplements for myself I would take milk thistle, digestive enzymes, and colostrum. This is a very personal choice though, and it’s important to take the supplements that you personally need. x
hi Jess,
my father is diagnosed with liposarcoma last week so we are going to be on a geron therapy. The main problem is there is no institute in S.Korea so I have to get all the supplements from U.S( Glad that i am living in the U.S so i can get all my supplemnts here) and bring them back to Korea. My question is I got all supplements from approved Gerson institute(Statmx and ISHI) but I couldnt get Thyroid medicine. On Gerson Institute website, i have to order it from Mexico directly. Do you know if ISHI has approved thyroid medicine? (but i couldnt find it on the website though)
Since my dad is waiting for the surgery, he started on the veggie diet and juices( without the supplement). Do you recommend coffee enema as well? my family is kinda skeptical about coffee enema so.. i dunno…(actually i am the one who believes in Gerson in my family)
jayde » Hi Jayde, yes we buy our thyroid supplement from ISHI. You may have to email them to ask for it if you cannot see it on the website. It’s called Novotiral. Yes, the enemas are a very important part of the Therapy. If he is juicing, he needs to be doing the enemas to ensure that the toxins are not distributed back into his system. They are totally safe! I still do two a day (but it was 5 a day in the beginning) I hope this helps, and I wish you guys all the best. xx
Jess, how much lugol’s solution to take per day? Is it 2% or 5%? can I just get it from the health store. Can I use the thyroid pills from ISHI even if it is not the one used by Gerson? Thanks!
Momgateway » This varies per person and I’m unable to tell you how much your body needs. I take 3 drops per day, but I have been on different amounts over the past couple of years. Yes, you should be able to get it from the health store. I’m not sure what you mean about the thyroid – the one from ISHI is the Gerson one.
Jess, I know of no one who can help me decide the thyroid tablet dose. Can you help me or direct me to someone who can help if I am able to get it from ISHI?
Thanks!
Momgateway » The dosage varies, so you need to speak with someone who can monitor you. http://www.kathrynalexander.com.au/ – Kathryn is a Gerson-trained practitioner.
Thank you for your prompt reply. One more question if you don’t mind. If I am following the Gerson diet eating the foods, etc. and only drinking 3 juices per day, is an enema critical or can I allow my body to eliminate on its own?
Blessings to you.
Pam in Tucson » Hi Pam if you are wanting to get the most out of the Gerson program a coffee enema is critical. If you are just have a three juices, one enema per day is enough. x
Howdy Jess, I’m doing the Modified Gerson Therapy. I have no specific chronic illness, but I
decided to do the Therapy because of different physical ailments that have surfaced as I’m
growing older. The Modified Therapy doesn’t require the castor oil enema, but I was wondering if
it would beneficial to do occasionally to clean the small intestine and hasten detoxing the body (for
example once a month). As you know, coffee enemas don’t reach that area of the body. However,
I understand there is a specific reason for everything done or not done on the Gerson Therapy and
don’t want to do anything that would disrupt the detox process and create problems. Are you able
to make a reccomendation?
Monika » Hi Monika, I think it would be fine for you to do these once a month. They are a great clean out! x
Namaste Jess, I so thank you for your courage, for sharing your love and for your desire to help others to know they to can heal even if they have been told different.
I have a degenerative heart disease and was diagnose with a precancerous cyst in my pancreas about one year and a half ago which all means my liver is pretty sick. I have been working on healing my heart disease with much success through Chinese herb tea and a raw diet change for some time now but it is not all the way healed. Now I know why it hasn’t healed all the way, it is because my liver is sick. I was told my liver was OK by the tests I had taken. Any how, I became pretty sick and was told I needed my gallbladder, spleen and 3/4 of my pancreas out last March. I refused treatment and have been on a natural path to heal since.
I found a great Chinese doctor that told me that my liver is sick. He and I have worked together with Chinese herbs, Acupunture, diet and my spiritual beliefs to get me pretty well but not all better yet. I have been divinely guided to the Gerson program and know this is for me, especially ready stories like yours.
If there is anything you can share, I would appreciate it. I started about a month ago, kinda doing the program, but now I am really focused and asking for help. I have ordered all the supplements and am ready for the real healing to begin.
My desire is to be there for others in need. This has been my path for at least 12 years now.
Joy and good health
Michele
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am so glad your here.
Hi Jess,
Michele here again, I wrote and shared a bit about my health and asked if you had any suggestions. How about some questions from me, this may make it easier. I chose the modified program and am still waiting for all my supplies to arrive. I am a little gun shy when it comes to all the potassium, the Iodine thyroid mixture and the nitrogen because I have a genetic heart disease. I have read some of the case studies about those being cured of heart disease on this program. Do you have any suggestions or comments on this matter? Can snacks be eaten between meals, of course nothing of the food list? Can a person eat sooner than the time on the program? If I have to go out of town or am working, is it OK to be off track or behind schedule a little? I believe I read there can be more enemas done then what is on the program. Is this true? I can’t find any information on herbal natural hormone creams, do you know if theses can be used? Though, I did read not to take prescribed estrogen hormones. My hope is that a woman going on the Gerson program that has been experiencing negative menopause symptoms, won’t not need any hormone herbal replacement therapy, once the body has healed. For my line of work, I am a massage therapist and use olive oil, do you have any thoughts or suggestions on this? How about my body, I usually use olive oil on my skin, do we use nothing once on the program?
I think that’s a good start for now as far as questions go. Hop I didn’t over do it…..I appreciate and thank you!
Namaste`

Good morning Jess,
I have heard the usual enzymes Wobenzym normal used for this process has been changed to something different. What are you using?
I thank you for taking your time out to answer some of my questions. I did speak to a couple of very nice people at the Gerson Institute and they answered my questions best they could. Joy and good health.
Namaste~
Hi Jess,
Michele again, one more question. What Thyroid do I get and where does a person get this?
Namaste~
Thanks Jess,
I was on the phone with Hymi at ISHI pharmacy today and he said they didn’t have any of the thyroid on Iodine. I will call back tomorrow and give the name that you gave me. This will make a difference I am sure.
Joy and good health.
Michele
Problem I am having is where do you get all of it at? Too much to shuffle thru and would appreciate your sources. Thx!
I hardly drop comments, but I read a great deal of comments
here The Gerson Therapy Supplements – The Wellness Warrior.
I actually do have 2 questions for you if you do not mind.
Is it only me or do a few of the remarks look like they are coming from
brain dead individuals?
And, if you are posting at additional sites, I would
like to follow you. Would you list of every one of all your public
pages like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile?
