My new best friend the hot water bottlet
While I was holed up in bed sick a couple of weeks ago I made an amazing discovery – the hot water bottle! I realise hot water bottles are not really a new discovery, I mean PMS-ing women have been fans of them for yonks, but I had never really appreciated their brilliance until now. Even when I was trekking the Himalayas a couple of years ago and we had to sleep in the freezingest of freezing conditions, I didn’t bother to get the out hot water bottle my boyfriend made me pack for the trip. It didn’t seem worth it. Man, was I wrong.
For something so simple, the hot water bottle made being stuck in bed all day worth it. Especially when it was so cold outside. It soothed my nauseous stomach, stabalised the chills my body had running and eased my aching muscles. But where it really stepped up to the plate was on my poor chemo-poisoned left arm (yes, three years later and my arm is still struggling from the inundation of toxins).
Here are some reasons to invest in a hot water bottle this winter …
• It will aid in digestion. Place it over your belly area after you’ve had a big meal.
• To combat illness. Use as a warm, soothing companion to help you through flu, chills, and aches.
• To ease menstrual cramps. A hot water bottle on the abdomen brings pain relief and soothing comfort.
• As a bed warmer. A warm hot water bottle placed in your bed makes for a cozy sleep, especially on cold winter nights.
• To ease arthritic pain. A natural, moist heat therapy for arthritic pain relief, especially great for hands.
• To calm children. A warm cuddly companion to provide a calm secure feeling when children are ill or upset.
• To promote deep relaxation and a feeling of nurturing.
• For a travelling companion.
• To calm your pet. Placed under a blanket, a warm hot water bottle soothes puppies in new surroundings. It provides warmth and security and calms them down. I wish I’d known this when we first bought Edie home.
• To encourage restful sleep. To help you sleep after a high-stress day, lie down with a hot water bottle on your stomach, close your eyes and breathe deeply, so the bottle rises and falls. Many people carry a lot of tension there and the weighted heat releases it.
You should be able to pick up a hot water bottle from any pharmacy, supermarket or department store. All you need to do it fill it with boiling water or hot water from the sick and it will stay warm for about two hours.
Anyone else a fan of the hot water bottle?
Positive affirmation for the day: I am gentle with myself today. I can look in the mirror and smile, knowing that I am more than okay just the way I am.

I adore my hot water bottle. i take it to bed and it's still just warm in the morning. so much better than an electric blanket!
I am using mine as I write this! I have a mini one placed between my back and chair at work.
About two years ago I lived in a very old, cold house and I got absolutely attached to my hot water bottle! I ended up carrying it around with me whenever I was at home or studying- it became a constant companion
I live in Texas and even though it is beastly hot summer here, I think I will get one for my arthritis achy hands! Thanks
Informative posts, Jess!… the hot water bottle is even more cozy with a knit cover over…I sewed one from an old flannel pajama leg…less sewing since it fit over it…the leg part of material fit my large bottle and arm material fit my small one!
I have a bad back and found the heat is perfect for treating the pain. Having said that, I switched to a wheat pack years ago to make it easier to use at work for example. I also got a little worried about giving it to the kids and the potential for hot water to scold, for whatever unfortunate mishap. But now that I think about it, I need to use the microwave to heat it up – not the best option right? What do you think Jess?
I gotta try this. Have one but haven't used it in forever. Thanks Jess…..
I used this when im having a dyspepsia or any stomach ache type.
I loved mine too, until I woke up and thought I had wet the bed. It had leaked everywhere and I had to flip my bed over in the middle of the night. I still haven't replaced it and miss it…Good times
So much better for you than an electric blanket as well. Jess you should think about investing in a wool rug, wool temperature regulates to your body so it keeps you warm when you need it, and when I went to see my brother in full NSW summer it kept me lovely a cool at night as well just over a sheet.
I grew up in Portugal and houses didn't have heat, so in the winter we all slept with them in our beds for warmth
Ha, ha! Jess, that's exactly what I did last night… went to bed with my hot water bottle. I love it!!
If i could marry my hot water bottle i would.
If my hot water bottle could vibrate I would never leave my bed!
Don't forget for your sore, aching muscles after a bootcamp class too !! x SculptLife
Hot water bottle is too useful in winter for me when I need lots of heat and warmth. It gives a terrific feeling when some kind of body ache is there. It's really precious form me.
